1.Provide the students with in-depth understanding of the fundamental concepts


of fluid mechanics
2.Provide the students with the understanding of the importance of fluid
mechanics in chemical processes

Course Objectives
1To gain an understanding of the basic principles of fluid
mechanics
2To gather knowledge on fundamental concepts of fluid
mechanics.

Course Learning Outcomes


1.Differentiate between real and ideal fluids
2.Describe and measure properties of fluids using
conventional apparatus and equipments

3 To gain understanding of the application areas of fluid


mechanics in chemical engineering
4To gain proper understanding of the application areas of
fluid mechanics in chemical process industries

3.Describe and differentiate Newtonian Fluids from NonNewtonian fluids


4.Calculate for Reynolds number. Critical velocity and
velocity distributions in a pipe for laminar and turbulent
flows.
5.Describe laminar from turbulent flows.
6.Measure and calculate fluid velocity using venturimeter,
orificemeter and pitot tube.
7.Determine friction factor using appropriate formulas and
physical property tables.
8.Apply the Bernoulli equation to solve problems in fluid
mechanics.
9.Apply control volume analysis to problems in fluid
mechanics
10. Calculate head loss in pipes due to friction, sudden
expansion and contraction, entrance, exit, obstruction and
change of formula.
11.Describe fluid flow from one reservoir to another
through a long pipe of uniform cross section
12.Describe fluid flow through open channels . Describe
flow over a sphere and non-sperical objects.
13.Describe flow through porous media and fibrous media
14. Describe fluidization and fluidized bed
15.Design and conduct experiments , as well as to analyze
and interpret data.
16.Design and operate pumps, compressors,pipes , and
storage tanks.
17. Perform laboratory experiments either individual or in a
group.
