The home assignment should be solved individually and be submitted on itslearning only, according to the deadline mentioned above. Make sure to comment your
Matlab code well if any and use references for the equations etc. you use. Please
note that your assignment will be checked automatically by itslearning for plagiarism. Any such matter will not only disqualify you from the course but can also
be reported to the disciplinary committee. A correctly submitted assignment is required to be graded. No scans or pictures of your handwriting will be accepted. See

Tasks:
1. Consider a 2-DOF system shown in Fig. 1.

Figure 1: A simple 2-DOF system.

where M1 = 4 Kg, k1 = 4.0 107 N/m, C1 = 52 Ns/m, M2 = 20 Kg,
k2 = 4.0 107 N/m,and C2 = 100 Ns/m.
(a) Write the differential equation for the 2-DOF system for the motion of
the system.
(b) Produce the mass [M], spring constant [K] and damping [C] matrices
with the correct numerical values.
(c) Find the un-damped Eigen frequencies for the system.
(d) Write the equations for all the point and trans(cross)-accelerance for the
system i.e H11 , H12 ,H21 and H22 .
(e) Plot all these acclerances in Matlab, with correct units in dB.
(f) What is difference between point-accelerance or trans-accelerance.
1

(g) From the FRF plots, state when the motion of the masses are in phase
and when they are anit-phase (180 degrees out of phase).
(h) How the value of affects the impulse response h(n) of a system and the
output of the system if the input is kept constant.
2. Vibration Isolation can be used in two different cases.
To isolate a sensitive equipment or device e.g. an electronics control
system of a car, from the vibration source such as the car engine.
To isolate or protect the environment from the vibration source, such as
to protect the surrounding area of heavy machines installed in a factory.
We take the second case and try to isolate a manufacturing factory building
e.g. the floor from the vibration produced by a Computer Numerical control
(CNC) Lath machine lying on the floor see Fig.2. The CNC machine having
an approximate mass of 10000 Kg is supported by four rubber pads at each
corner, each can be modelled as a spring and damper. For simplicity we assume
that all the four springs and dampers can be modelled as a single spring and
damper as shown in Fig.3. Lets assume that the damping coefficient C = 400
Ns/m, Xm is the vibration of the CNC machine and XF is the vibration of the
floor which is transmitted from the machine to the floor through the rubber
pads.
(a) Derive an equation for vibration isolation as a ratio between the vibration
at the machine Xm and the floor XF .
(b) Find the value of the spring constant k to get a vibration isolation ratio
(transmissibility) of 0.002 at the vibration frequency 100 Hz.
(c) Plot the transmissbility with respect to frequency similar to a frequency
response function (FRF) plot in dB, with different values of = 0.1,
= 0.01 and = 0.001 in the same plot. Discuss in which frequency
range the isolation is effective and the effect of on isolation.

Figure 2: A vibration isolation example. The Machine lying on the floor with four
rubber pads at each corner. Each rubber pad is approximated as a spring and
damper.

Figure 3: A vibration isolation example. All the springs and dampers are modelled
as a single spring and damper.
