Slide Bearings Type E

For Shaft Diameter Range 160315 mm

Main Application Field
Electric Machines

End flange mounted slide bearing type EFWF with watercooling and lubrication by a fixed oil ring

RENK series EFWF has been

developed as a variation of
the Etype bearing, based on
the modular component prin
ciple. The EFWF bearings are
a flangemounted water
cooled design with fixed oil
ring lubrication.
The mounting flange is located
laterally at the end of the
housing. The main application
field for this type of bearings
is electric machines in particu
lar for marine application.
This leaflet contains the data
required for incorporating
EFWF type bearings into
machine designs.

Technical Information

This brochure gives details of

a range of fixed oil ring lubri
cated EFbearings, shaft dia
meters 160 to 315 mm, suit
able for use on electrical
machines, fans, water turbines
and pumps.
For information on Ebearings
with smaller shaft diameters
refer to the corresponding
RENK brochures.
Bearing Housing
The finned EF housings size
22 to 35 are made of high
quality cast iron (ENGJL300)
and are designed for heavy
duty performance. Other
materials, such as ENGJS
40018LT or GS 45 can be
supplied in special cases.
Bearing Shells
The shells are manufactured
from steel (C 10) and have a
spherical seating. They are
lined with RENKmetal therm
89 and the working surfaces
and the oilways are configur
ated to give long life under
severe operating conditions.
Being fully interchangeable
ensures trouble free assembly
at all times.
The bearing shells for the E
type bearings with lubrication
by fixed oil ring have always a
plain cylindrical bore.
Apart from bearings without
thrust parts (type...Q) there are
shells with plain whitemetal
lined shoulders (type...B) to
absorb noncontinuous axial
loads of limited magnitude, as
well as shells with bidirection
al taper land faces (type...K)
which can absorb axial loads
of medium magnitude.
Alternatively the taper land
faces can be supplied suitable
for only one sense of rotation
(type...E) to absorb high axial
loads.
Seals
Particularly for marine applica
tion the EFWFtype bearings
sizes 22 to 35 are equipped
with rigid seals (type 20).
These seals are made of cor
rosion resistant aluminium

alloys and correspond to pro

tection grade IP 44. Higher
protection grade (up to IP 56)
upon request.
For stationary applications the
bearings can be also fitted
with floating labyrinth seals
(type 10). These seals are
made of fibre reinforced, high
temperature resistant RENK
plastic therm P50 and are
resistant to wear. The floating
labyrinth seals correspond to
protection grade IP 44. Higher
protection grades (up to IP 56)
are also available.
Special types of seals such as
air seals or special machine
seals are also available on
request.
Oil Supply
Self lubrication by fixed oil ring
in closed ring channel, up to
approx. 18 m/s speed at the
outer diameter of the ring.
The nonlocating bearings are
fitted with fixed oil rings which
move in axial direction on the
shaft. The oil ring follows the
movement of the shaft due to
the friction produced by
springmounted pressure
plates.
For use with locating bearing,
the fixed oil ring is designed
as collar, which can be either
shrunk onto the shaft or
machined out of the shaft
forging.
An oil scraper takes up the
lubricant carried to the highest
point by the fixed oil ring and
delivers it to the oil pockets.
The fixed oil ring has an excel
lent performance, ensuring
enough lubricant amount even
in the case of combined jour
nal and thrust bearings.
Electrical Insulation
To prevent problems from
electrical eddy currents, the
EFWF bearings can be electri
cally insulated, internally. In
such cases the spherical seat
ing of the shell is coated with
a layer of insulating plastic
material.

Also there is an insulating

layer between rigid labyrinth
seal and housing.
Heat Dissipation
Frictional heat generated is
usually dissipated by radiation
and natural convection.
Water cooling can also be
used, through seawater resist
ant cooling tubes submerged
in the oil sump. Dimensions
for connection upon request.
Temperature Control
Two independent commercial
ly available thermosensors can
be used for monitoring the
temperature of the bearing.
We recommend the use of
RENK resistance thermome
ters; alternatively RENK angle
thermometers for direct visual
reading.
Oil Selection
Generally, any branded oil of
low foaming tendency can be
used as a lubricant. The cor
rect viscosity for each operat
ing condition will be deter
mined by EDP calculation.
Such calculations are always
carried out at the design
stage. A printout of the
results can be provided on
request.
Hydrostatic Jacking
In the case of high surface
pressures, provision can be
made for high pressure jack
ing oil. The bottom half shell is
provided with two hydrostatic
pockets (one either side of the
vertical centre line) with con
nections to a high pressure
jacking system via flexible
pipes.
Further Options
For applications where the
startup takes place at low
ambient temperatures, the
bearings can be fitted with a
heater located in the oil sump.

Dimensions of Bearings

1) Seal diameters (d ) are possible with every shaft diameter of one size.
9
2) This dimension is about 3 mm larger in case of insulated bearings.
3) Bore available on both sides.

All weight values indicated in this catalogue are average, nonbinding values. The
drawings shown are not strictly binding.
Note
Any additional machine seal on the machine side will be of special design.
