A) POLITICAL CAUSES:

 Ended absolute power of czars & pogroms

 Middle class wanted a voice in the government

B) ECONOMIC CAUSES:

 Peasants want the nobles’ land

 Factory workers want better conditions

C) SOCIAL CAUSES:

 Various nationalities want to end Russification

D) MILITARY CAUSES:

 Soldiers were poorly equipped to fight WWI

 People want peace, end of humiliation

 Examples; Russo-Japanese War, WWI

Effects

A) Communism appeals to soldiers, workers and peasant b/c of Lenin’s promise of:

B) Red Terror= execution of thousands of nobles to prevent a counter-revolution

 REDS= communists who crush opposition

 WHITES= former czarist generals, noble and middle class

C) Fear of Communist uprising throughout the world

D) New Economy & Gov’t in Russia:

 Economy= Command Economy

 Government= Communist

A) Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels- Communist Manifesto – Proletariat will rise up
and revolt against the bourgeoisie and create a classless society!!!

B) Vladimir Lenin- leader of the Communist Revolution and government from


1917-1924

 New Economic Policy(NEP)= mix of command and capitalist economy…


command=nationalized industries; capitalism= farmers keep the surplus
crops

 Lenin established a one party government= Communist Party; only party


members could run for office, party enforced it’s will through the military and
a secret police

 By 1922, Lenin and the Communists had gained control over much of the old
Russian empire. The government then created the Union of Soviet Socialist
Republics (U.S.S.R.) also called The Soviet union- Russia controlled the other
states.

Power Struggle

 After Lenin’s death a struggle for control of the government exists between
Trotsky(Defense Minister) and Joseph Stalin (First Secretary)

 Stalin emerges on top and has Trotsky assassinated in Mexico.

 Stalin will control the Soviet Union from 1924-1953

2. Collective Farms:

 Took private land away from the peasants

 Farms are owned and operated by the government

 Hoped it would increase production= failed

 Increased control over the peasants

This led to an uprising- millions will be executed or exiled to Siberia

3. FIVE YEAR PLANS:

 Plan to change Russia from an agricultural to industrial economy

 Designed to create HEAVY Industry= develop basic industries


 Most of government spending is on military

RESULT: not concerned with light industry…leads to a lack of consumer


goods and choices
