9.1 VOLUNTEERING IN AN ORPHANAGE

WILL PROVIDE

THESE

ORPHANED

CHILDREN NEED TO DEVELOP HEALTHY SOCIAL SKILLS AND BOOSTING SELFCONFIDENCE FOR THE ORPHANS.
9.2 VOLUNTEERING WITH THESE ORPHANS WILL GIVE YOU AN INTIMATE INSIGHT
INTO A NEW AND EXCITING WORLD. A WORLD WHERE CHILDCARE IS A
PRIVILAGE AND A GIFT, WHERE ORPHANS WHO HAVE NOTHING WILL SHARE
WHATEVER THEY CAN WITH A COMPLETE STRANGER, AND WHERE YOU CAN
CHANGE THE LIVES OF PEOPLE AND CHILDREN JUST BY BEING YOURSELF.
9.3 BECOMING A VOLUNTEER WITH ORPHANS IS BOTH EASY AND REWARDING. IT
UTILIZES A WIDE RANGE OF THE VOLUNTEERS INTEREST, TALENTS, SKILLS,
AND KNOWLEDGE; WHETHER IT IS TEACHING THE CHILDREN AND HELPING
THEM WITH THEIR HOMEWORK, OR PLAYING A GAME OF TAG, BY SIMPLY
SHARING YOUR TIME, EXPERIENCES AND KNOWLEDGE WITH THEM, YOU ARE
MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR LIVES.

1. INTRODUCTION
Management & Science University (MSU), being the University of Choice, care for the society
and its community wholly. Thus, on 17th of October 2014, Faculty of Information Science and
Engineering (FISE) will organize an event for volunteering work at Rumah Tunas Harapan Tengku
Ampuan Rahimah, Kuala Selangor. The program will be participating by 60 students from FISE,
comprises of Bachelor and Diploma students who take Community Services Code Subject:
MPU2192-BACHELOR and MPU1082-DIPLOMA for November 2014 Session.
Through this program, students will experiencing a truly life-changing as they volunteer at the
local orphanage, a professionally managed safe haven for infants, toddlers, and young children who
have been removed from their homes due to reasons such as malnutrition, neglect or parents death.
Our volunteers responsibilities include gotong-royong, cleaning up the library, spending quality time
playing and bonding with the children, and helping the staff with daily responsibilities.
This is a unique opportunity to learn first-hand hardships many young people in the world face,
and to give back to underprivileged children growing up under the most challenging circumstances.
This program could be very meaningful experience to the participants because it provides
activities that promote critical thinking, application skills and level of participation among students.
This is a part of the university initiative for the students to practice and develop their soft skills. Thus,
this program can run smoothly achieve its objectives and goals.

10. CONCLUSION
As a university student, with busy lives and considerable assignments, we find it hard to seek
time or opportunity to volunteer in a community service program. However, with Community Service
subject (MPU2192-BACHELOR) and (MPU1082-DIPLOMA) being offered in our Course Program, it
provides us opportunities to join as we are aware of its benefits to our life, family and society.
Through this program, students will experiencing a truly life-changing as they volunteer at the
local orphanage, a professionally managed safe haven for infants, toddlers, and young children who
have been removed from their homes due to reasons such as malnutrition, neglect or parents death.
Students can improve their character values and responsible behavior through community
service-learning. They can generalize what they learn from their experiences with the orphans. They
learn how to be appreciative to others, to be respectful and develop awareness of healthy life choices
for the sake of loved ones. Finally, they learn about cultural diversity and show more tolerance of
ethnical diversity.
And forth, service-learning can improve academic outcomes for students. As they participate in
high-quality service-learning experiences that are meaningful; including the interaction with the
orphans, gotong-royong, and spending quality-time with the kids, it provides time for reflection as the
students witness others hardship without mother or father and trying to strive to make their life better
through academic.
Last but not least, community service-learning can promote a sense of connectedness to the
others. Unpaid volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together. Volunteering allows you
to connect to your community and make it a better place. Even helping out with the smallest tasks
can make a real difference to the lives of people, especially orphans. And volunteering is a two-way
street: it can benefit the students as much as the cause you choose to help. Dedicating your time as a
volunteer helps you make new friends, expand your network, and boost you social skills.

Suggestion of Fund Raising Activities (Target RM100 minimum per group)

Care to answer 5 W priciples.
WHAT?
Establish a cafe where orphans are assigned to be waiters to gain fun experiences, also for fund raising. There will
be activities such as coloring-contest, puzzle games, and naming characters as the customers can spend time with
the children while relaxing. We will be selling and serving coffee, soda, candy and other pre-packaged foods.
WHY?
There are many reasons why we should all lend a hand to help orphans. We should help them because these
children have no one. They are often the most vulnerable to being brought up in lives of crime, or sold off into slavery.
These are babies, toddlers, and teenagers who for whatever reason are alone in this world.
Orphans, with no one connected to them by blood, or law, they move through their lives at the mercy of those
presently in charge of them (i.e RTH Tengku Ampuan Rahimah). So everyone should at least try helping an orphan
by donating money or clothes. It doesnt only end as a good deeds but you also are helping others who are in need.
WHEN?
We will be publizing the opening through flyers or advertising the opening of the Orphans Cafe around the
neighborhood. As there is a say; Success depends on advertising! Dont limit to members or departments. More
people equals to more funding. The event will be held during Saturday weekend from 10 AM to 5 PM.
WHERE?
Rumah Tunas Harapan Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, Kuala Selangor.
HOW?
To establish a cafe, we need to cover the cost for materials, food, and beverages, thus, we need to have a budget.
From each member of group, well be collecting money or contact alumni/professionals for supports. Aside that, for
advertising, we will make the orphans cosplaying in waiter-costumed to attract more attention from the public. We can
also request to our friends to boast about the event to their peers to help raising the funds more.
