Peter James human organ traffic articles

Voluntarily
Forced

1. The recruitment: internet, homeless people, people with serious and

irrecuperable diseases
2. The intermediation: it may be even a past donor, a member of the gang
3. The surgery: in Romania, they usually leave the country in order to avoid the law
which forces the donor to be either compatible with the patient or a relative of
the one in need.
For example, the gang buys the kidney for 15. 000 E and sells it on the black market at
a price around 120.000 E. The mafia exploits the fact that there are so many requests
of organs (some people may wait years for a transplant). Even though the organs are
very expansive, there will always be someone willing to spend that money on the
necessary organ instead of waiting and putting his life at risk (in some cases people die
before succeeding in making the transplant because they have to wait for a long period
of time for the necessary organ).
According to some statistics, every hour there are at least three people that deliberately
killed or mutilated in order to get their organs.
Human organs traffic is linked to the traffic in persons. In some cases, peoples organs
are emptied out of their bodies after they have accepted job offers in other countries.
Most organ donors are from poor regions of the world, so we can speak about a real
human organs tourism. Third world people are more likely to become the target of
organs trafficker considering the high numbers of donors. Even the children are
kidnapped because of their organs( which will arrive at rich people in the West of
Europe, for example).

As the Internet is full of this kind of offer we can conclude that

this is a huge business

Philippines, Mexico, China - > they are well known for the human organs traffic

Factors: poverty, the decrease of available organs (according to World Health

Organization)
Kidneys are the most trafficked organs because individuals can live with just only one
kidney. Each year around 7000 kidneys are trafficked (which means an income of 1 000
000 $). At the same time, the egg cells are also being trafficked. Usually, in this
business are also involved some clinics specialized in in vitro fertilisation.
Romania
According to the Directorates for Investigation of Crimes of Organised Crime and
Terrorism annual report, in 2013 six defendants were incriminated of being part of an
organised crime group which was specialized in human cells traffic. Pursuant to the
prosecutors information, the members of a private clinic from Bucharest and also some
israelian citizens contacted women ( most of them were students) in order to collect
their egg cells. They gave each 600 euros in exchange for the egg cells. The women
were supposed to follow a hormonal treatment. Meanwhile, the defendants also
contacted various persons who were interested in in vitro fertilisation (around 255 and
most of them were israelian citizens who spent a considerable amount of money on this
procedure). According to the bill of indictment the defendants used in their procedures
of in vitro fertilisation some drugs which were forbidden in Romania ( as the defendants
did not have any licence regarding this medicine). These drugs value around 200 000
euros.
