Tutorial 04 Design of Pre Stressed Concrete (PSC) Box-Girder Bridge

USER's Guide to run Project Data for Design of Pre Stressed Concrete (PSC) Box-Girder Bridge, To
understand various data syntax user may refer to relevant section of ASTRA Pro main screen
Help or Users Manual,

SECTION 1

BRIDGE DECK ANALYSIS FOR DEAD LOAD & LIVE LOAD

1.1 Analysis and Design for PSC Box Girder Bridge


From ASTRA Pro Main Screen select menu option "Process Design>>Bridge Design>>Working
Folder",

1.2 Select Working Folder


Click mouse on button "Browse" as shown below,

Make a folder as "Work" in the Desktop and select it and click on button "OK",

In the Dialog Box click on button "OK", as shown below,

1.3 Select Design Standard


Choose the Design Standard from the next Dialog Box and click on "OK", as shown below,

1.4 Select a Design Item

Next select the menu option "Process Design>>Bridge Design>>Pre Stressed Concrete (PSC) BoxGirder Bridge", as shown below,

1.5 Analysis Of Bridge Deck


The next screen comes for "Analysis of Bridge Deck", Under this Tab there are three more Tabs,
these are: User Input Data, Cross Section Diagram with User Input for Dimension Details of PSC Box
Girder and Analysis Process.

1.6 User Input Data


The current selected Tab is "User's Input Data", where various Inputs are provided with default
values, Dead Load, Super Imposed Dead Load for Wearing Course, Parapet wall, Footpath, Live Load
for Multi Lane Moving loads with Impact Factors,

1.7 Cross Section Diagram

This screen helps user to define various data in the last Dialog Box, In 2-lane bridge the Deck is for
both the carriageways, In 3-Lane bridge the Deck is for one carriageway only,

1.8 Cross Section Data and Calculated Section Properties

Click on button 'Show Details' to see the various the various User Input data and calculated values of
Section Properties based on the data,

1.9 Analysis process

In the Tab "Analysis process" click on the button "Create Analysis data",

The Analysis Input data with computed Load and Section properties are created as
"INPUT_DATA.TXT inside the folder "ANALYSIS OF PSC BOX GIRDER BRIDGE" which is created by
ASTRA Pro inside user's currently selected working folder,

1.10 Process Analysis


Click on button "Process Analysis",

1.11 Process Live Load Analysis for Moving Vehicle/Train Loads in Multi Lanes
Message box comes informing about Processing Live Load Data for applied vehicle/Train moving
load on the bridge deck, Click on button "OK",

The Dialog box comes, Click on Button "Proceed", Wait for some time,

The Message comes as shown below, based on User given Moving Load increment, for each step of
multi lane moving loads a separate load case is created, here the total load cases is shown required
as increment steps to pass over the entire span of the bridge deck, Click on button "OK",

Next the process box comes, click on button "PROCEED", and Wait for some time,

As the Analysis process for Total Load is over the Message comes as below, Click on "OK",

Next, ASTRA Pro reads the Analysis Results from the Report,

The current selected tab is 'Analysis Results', the result of Live Load analysis is displayed in this tab,
the message comes informing about the next process for applied Dead Load & SIDL+FPLL (Super
Imposed Dead Load and Foot Path Live Load),

Load)
As the process screen comes click on "Proceed",

The Message and informs the number of load cases in this process, Click on "OK",

As the process comes click on " PROCEED " and wait for some time,

As the Analysis process for Dead Load & SIDL+FPLL is over the Message comes as below, Click on
"OK",

Next, ASTRA Pro reads the Analysis Results from the Report, next, the results of analysis for Dead
Load and results of analysis for SIDL+FPLL are displayed in separate boxes in the current tab,

1.13 Reaction Forces on Supports

The Currently Selected Tab is "Reaction Forces", This displays Vertical Reactions and Bending
Moments which will be used for the Design of RCC Piers, The maximum effect comes by taking
Reactions of Girder from both sides resting on a Pier,

DESIGN OF PSC BOX GIRDER

The current selected Tab is "Design of Pre Stressed Main Girder", Under this Tab there are three
Tabs "General Design Data", "Pre Stressing Data" and "Reinforcement Data",

2.1 General Design Data:


The Tab "General Design Data" is currently selected, the various default data are given, user may
change the data as desired,

2.2 Pre Stressing Data:


The Tab "Pre Stressing Data" is currently selected, the various default data are given, user may
change the data as desired,

2.3 Reinforcement Data:


The Tab "Reinforcement Data" is currently selected, Under this Tab there are four more Tabs, Tab
"Details 1" is currently selected, The various default data are given which user may change as
desired,

2.4 Design Process:


Click on button "Process", The various default data are given which user may change as desired, The
Pop up screen comes for Cable Data and calculation Cable Forces for all 7 cables on either of two
Webs of the Box Girder,

The Current selected Tab is for Cable 1, the data in RED color are given by the user, the data in BLUE
color are calculated values, Click on button "Process" at the bottom of the screen,

color are calculated values, Click on button "Process" at the bottom of the screen,

The Current selected Tab is for Cable 3, the data in RED color are given by the user, the data in BLUE
color are calculated values, Click on button "Process" at the bottom of the screen,

color are calculated values, Click on button "Process" at the bottom of the screen,

The Current selected Tab is for Cable 5, the data in RED color are given by the user, the data in BLUE
color are calculated values, Click on button "Process" at the bottom of the screen,

color are calculated values, Click on button "Process" at the bottom of the screen,

The Current selected Tab is for Cable 7, the data in RED color are given by the user, the data in BLUE
color are calculated values, Click on button "Process" at the bottom of the screen, Click on "OK",

The message comes about Design Report created in the folder, Click on "OK", and Report opens,

User may study the Report, User may select desired Design Step to reach directly,

SECTION 3

DESIGN OF RCC PIER

The selected Tab is "RCC Pier >> Design Input Data [Form1]", All the data in RED color are taken from
Analysis data as given by the user, other default data user may change as desired, Click on the
button "Process",

The selected Tab is "RCC Pier >> Design Input Data [Form2]", All the data in RED color are taken from
Analysis data as given by the user, other default data user may change as desired, Click on the
button "Process",

The selected Tab is "Diagram" helps user understand the Input Data, Click on "OK",

For design of Piers as Short Column with Vertical Reaction as Axial Force and Bi Axial Bending, The
Interaction Diagram may be referred to and the Input is to be given in the box below and click "OK",

The Message comes about the Step wise Design report, Click on "OK",

The RCC Pier Design Report is opened for studies by the user, User may select a Step to reach there
directly,

SECTION 4

DRAWINGS

Sample Drawings compatible to AutoCAD (DWG/DXF) are created which may be edited for printing
and submissions, Click on button "Pre Stressed Main Girder Drawing",

There are Ten CAD drawings as described in the list on the left side, the Drawing No: 1 for General
Arrangement is currently selected and opened,

The Drawing No: 6 for End Block details is currently selected and opened,

The Drawing No: 7 for Reinforcement details is currently selected and opened,

The Drawing No: 8 for Reinforcement details is currently selected and opened,

The Drawing No: 9 for Pre Stressing Block details is currently selected and opened,

The Drawing No: 10 for Reinforcement Details of Deviator Block at Mid Span and Anchorage Point is
currently selected and opened,

The Drawing No: 12 for Cable Profile and other data is currently selected and opened,

Next, Click on button "RCC Pier Drawing",

The drawing is showing the Structural Details of Pier Stem and Pier Cap,
