PvPorbotbattles.AsofMarch1,2015,thereare123differentchampionsfromwhichtochoose,allof
whichareclassifiedbytype(assassin,tank,support,etc.),whichindicatesthechampion'sgameplay

Playersgainlevelsfromkillingtheopposingteam'schampions,controlledbyotherplayersorbots,and
minionsthatregularlyspawnandattacktheotherteam'sturrets,minions,andchampions.Intheclassic
gamemode,themapistypicallydividedintothree"lanes",whicharepathsthatspawnedminionstakethe
"jungle",anareabetweenlaneswhereneutralmonstersspawnand"bases",whereplayersspawnandcan
purchaseitems.Thethreelanesarecomposedofthebottom,mid,andtoplanes,whichdifferentchampions
tendtobattleonbasedontheirrespectivetypes.Thejungleissometimesconsideredalane,wheresome
championstendtoroaminordertocollectbuffsandassistintheotherlanesfreely.Theplayerearnsa
smallamountofgoldeverysecondpassivelybutcanearnmorebygettingthelasthitonminions,
destroyingenemytowers(referredtoasturrets)thatguardthelanes,killingneutralmonsterslocatedinthe
jungle,andkillingenemychampions.Withthisgold,userscanbuyavarietyofitemstostrengthentheir
championfortheremainingdurationofthegame.OntheclassicSummonersRift,TwistedTreeline,and
HowlingAbyssmaps,thegameisendedbydestroyingtheenemyteam'slaststructureonthemap,called
the"Nexus",fromwhichminionsspawn.Othermapshavevariationsofrulesandobjectives,suchas
DominionontheCrystalScarmap,whereeachteam'sNexusloseshealthiftheopposingteamcontrolsat
leastthreeofthefivetowerslocatedaroundthemap.[12]
TheLeagueofLegendsStoreallowsplayerstopurchaseadditionaloptionsthrough"RiotPoints"(RP)and

Theplayerisidentifiedasa"summoner"andactsasthepersistentelementinthegame.Asummoner's
statisticsandscoresaretrackedandareaccessibletotheplayer.[13][14]Summonersgainexperiencepoints
andInfluencePointsforeachbattletheyparticipatein.Experiencepointsleadtopersistentlevelgainsfor
thesummoner,uptoamaximumlevelof30.ThebenefitofgaininglevelsisunlockingMasteryPointsand
RunePageslots(below)whichimprovetheoverallstrengthofthesummoner'schosenchampionduring
battles.Thesummonercanalsochoosetwo"summonerspells",[13]whichsignificantlyimpactgameplay
andhaveahighcooldownratewhilecostingnomana.PreviouslyinSeason3,SummonerSpellscouldbe
enhancedwithspecificmasteries,butthosemasterieshavebeenremovedsincethestartofSeason4.The
onlyenhancementsthatremaindealwithlowercooldowns.Allofthemasteriesarepassiveeffects,
althoughsomeaugmentitemswhichcanbeactivated.Theyaregroupedintooffensive,defensive,and
utilitycategories.Masteriescanberedistributedatwillbetweenbattles.
Similartomasteries,runesaffectgameplayinminorways.Runes
arecategorizedintoMarks(offensive),Seals(defensive),Glyphs
(magic),andQuintessences(utility).Theymustbeunlockedinthe
store.Tobenefitfromrunes,summonerscanarrangethemintheir
Runebooks,whichhasalimitednumberofslotsforeachrunetype.
However,morerunepagescanbepurchasedfromeitherInfluence

Moderationisconductedthroughademocraticsystemknownasthe
faceoffagainstTaric(top)inthe
Tribunal.Inthissystem,playersubmittedreportsarereviewedby

otherplayersonacasebycasebasis.Thereviewingplayersthen
submittheiropinionsonthelegalityofthebehaviordemonstrated.
Aconsensusrendersthedecisionofficial.Itisnotablethatplayersareunabletobepermanentlybanned
throughthissystemsince"allpermanentbansaredistributedmanually."ReviewersreceiveaJusticeRating
basedontheiraccuracytoencouragethoroughanalysisofcases.[16]AsofMay2014,theTribunalis

LeagueofLegendsisasessionbasedgame.MatchmakingcreatesteamswithevenaverageMatchmaking
Rating(MMR)oftheconstituentplayers.MMRusestheEloformulawithproprietaryadjustments.[18]
Tutorialmodeisasetoftwointroductorysessionsthatteachthebasicsofthegame.Itisintendedto
helpnewplayerslearnconceptssuchasthecontrolsandthegame'sHUD.
Custommodeallowsplayerstocreategamesthatplayersmanuallyjoinratherthanrelyingonthe
game'smatchmakingsystemtocreatetheteams.Incustommatches,theteamscanbeunevenand
mayincludeamixofplayersandbots(computercontrolledchampions).
Classicmodeisanormalorrankedmatchinwhichateamwinsbydestroyingtheenemyteam's
Nexus,whichcanonlybeattackedifalllaneturretsandtheinhibitorinatleastonelaneandallbase
turretsaredestroyed.Classicmodeisplayedintwodifferentstyles:1.5vs.5onathreelanemap,

totheplayers,whilethelastonehealstheplayers.Thesealtarsaresurroundedbyajungle.Thereare
threetypesofmatchesinClassicmode:
Normalmatchesareplayerversusplayer.Beforethebeginningofthematch,thereareseveral
waysforteamplayerstoselecttheirchampions.Blindpickmatchesallowbothteamstopick
championsatthesametime,buteachteamdoesnotlearnwhattheopposingteamhaspicked
untilallpickshavebeenfinalizedplayersmaythereforeincidentallychoosethesame
championasaplayerontheopposingteam,butplayersmaynotchoosethesamechampionas
anotherplayerontheirownteam.Draftpickrandomlyassignsateamcaptainforeachteam,
whothentaketurnsbanningthreechampionseach,disallowingbothteamsfromplayingthose
sixchampions.Draftplayersthenchoosetheirchampionsinanorderedbackandforthformat.
Becausebothteamscanseewhichchampioneachplayerispicking,noplayercanpicka
championthathasalreadybeenpickedbyanotherplayer.
Rankedmatchesareavailabletoplayersthatarelevel30.Rankedusesadraftpicksystem
exclusively,andplayersareseededintoaLeaguesystembasedontheoutcomeoftheir
matches.Winningandlosinggamesinfluencesaplayer'sMMR,whichisintendedtokeepall
players'skilllevelsinanygivengameascloseaspossible.
Coopvs.AImodematchesplayersagainstateamofbots.SimilartotheTutorialmode,itis
alsointendedmainlyasawayforinexperiencedplayerstolearn.
TeamBuilder,releasedonMarch27,2014,isanormalclassicmodequeuethatallowsplayers
toqueueupasaspecificchampionandroleoftheirchoice.Aftersubmittingyourselectionsto
theteambuildersystem,youcanbuildyourownbalancedteamorjoinanexistingone.Team
builderisintendedtobringplayerstogetherthatcomplementeachother'sexpectationsand
intentionsthemomenttheyenterthelobby.Thisallowsformorecooperativeplayand
communicationbetweenplayerswhoareplayingaroleandchampiontheywantratherthan
somethingtheyareforcedtodo.
Dominionmodeisanormalmatchplayed5v5onCrystalScar,amapwithasinglecircularlanethat
hasfiveneutralturretsarrangedinastarpattern.Ateamwinsbyreducingthelifetotaloftheenemy
team'sNexus,whichonlyoccursiftheopposingteamcontrolsatleastthreeofthefiveneutralturrets,
untilitiszero.
ARAM(AllRandomAllMid)moderandomlypickschampionsthattheplayersareabletoplay,
allowingupto2rerollsiftheplayerisunsatisfiedwiththeirpick.Playersmayalsotradewith
teammatesifbothpartiesownthechampionstobetraded.Themodeisplayed5vs.5onHowling
Abyss,aonelanemapwitheachteam'ssidehavingtwolaneturrets,aninhibitor,twobaseturrets,
andaNexus.Ateamwinsbydestroyingtheenemyteam'sNexus,whichcanonlybeattackedifboth

OneforAllmodewasthefirstlimitedtimegamemodethatwasavailableduringthe2013
Harrowing,anditisnolongeravailable.Inthisgamemode,eachteamwasrandomlyassigneda
captain,whothentookturnsbanningthreechampionseach,disallowingbothteamsfromplaying
thosesixchampions.Playersoneachteamwouldthenselectchampionsatthesametime.Each
playerwasonlyawareoftheirownteam'schoicesuntilallpicksarefinalized,aswithblindpick.
However,therewasnorestrictiononchoosingachampionthathadalreadybeenpicked.Onceall
playershadbeenchosen,eachteamwasassignedthechampionthatwaspickedbythemostplayers
onthatteam,andallplayershadtoplayasthatchampion.Intheeventofatie,thegamerandomly
selectedthechampion.OneforAllcouldbeplayed5vs.5oneithertheSummoner'sRiftorHowling
Abyssmaps.ThisgamemodelaterreturnedattheendofMay2014,withanewtwistbothteams
wereassignedthesamechampion.Thisversion,calledOneForAll:MirrorModetookplaceonlyon
theHowlingAbyss(ARAM)map.
Showdownwasthesecondlimitedtimegamemode,availableduringthe2013Snowdown
Showdown.Showdownwasplayedeither1vs.1or2vs.2ontheHowlingAbyssmap.Eachteam
playeduntiloneteamachievedoneofthreegoals:takingdownanenemyturret,reaching100team
minionkills,orkillingtheenemyplayer(ortwoin2vs.2matches).
Hexakillmodewasthethirdlimitedtimegamemode.TakingplaceonSummonersRift,eachteam
hadsixplayersinsteadofthetypicalfive.HexakillreturnedontotheTwistedTreelineMap,in
October24,2014,astheseventhlimitedtimegamemode.
UltraRapidFiremodewasintroducedonApril1,2014asthefourthlimitedtimegamemode.Itwas
aClassicDraftgame,exceptthatallchampionshadtheirmovementspeedincreased,gainedgold
quicker,usedabilitieswithoutusingmanaorenergy,andhadmorepowerfulrangedattacks,among
otherchanges.Severalchampionswereunavailableinthismode.[19][20]
DoomBotsofDoomwasthefifthlimitedtimegamemode,releasedonJuly17,2014.Ittookplace
onSummoner'sRift,wherefiveactualplayerswouldplayagainstfiveAIenemieswithextremely
modifiedabilities,makingthemextremelydangerous.Playerswonbydestroyingtheenemynexus,
pernormalgamerules,andtheylostiftheirownnexuswasdestroyed.Therewerethreedifficulty
modesavailable,"1Bomb",theeasiest,"2Bombs",amediumdifficultymode,and"5Bombs",an
extremelydifficultandhardcoreversionofthemode.
AscensionwasthesixthlimitedtimegamemodeandwasreleasedaspartoftheShurimaeventon
September10,2014.ItwasavailableonlyontheCrystalScarandwasheldasa5v.s.5draftpick
mode.SimilartotheDominionmode,eachteam'sNexuscouldonlybedestroyedbyaccruingpoints,
whichtakesdowntheHPfromtheenemyNexus.Pointscouldbeaccruedinnumerousways,by
killingenemychampions,bycapturingRelicsofShurima,orbykillingtheAscended.TheCrystal
Scarmapwasalsomodifiedsothattheoutermostareaofthemapwasengulfedinasandstorm,

thesameamountofgoldandexperience,regardlessofkillsorassistsaccrued(unlessplayershad
goldgenerationitemsorperksequipped).Inthemiddleofthemap,aneutralmonstercalledan
Ascendedwillspawn,andwhomeverlandsthefinalhitonthemonsterwillgranttheirteampoints
whilegrantingthekilleraselfbuff,whichmakesthemstronger.Iftheplayerwiththisbuffiskilled,
thenextrapointswillbegranted,however,whilethebuffisactive,killsaccruedbytheplayerwith
thebuffwillgrantmorepoints.
LegendofthePoroKingwastheeighthlimitedtimegamemode.Itwasreleasedalongsidethe
WinterSeasonforLeagueofLegends.Themaincharacteristicsforthisgamemodeisforbothteams
tothrowPorosandsuccessfullyhittheenemychampions.Eachhitequals1point.Onceeitherside
hasreached10points,thePoroKingisspawnedtopushlanes,whilethescoreboardisdisabled,the
PoroKingstaysalivetilldispelledandthenthescoreboardwillreturn.ThemodeendedonJanuary6,
2015.

Thegame'sdeveloperRiotGameswascofoundedbyBrandon"Ryze"BeckandMarc"Tryndamere"
Merrill.TheypartneredwithSteve"Guinsoo"Feak,thepreviousdesignerofthepopularWarcraftIII:The
FrozenThronecustommapDefenseoftheAncients,andSteve"Pendragon"Mescon,theadministratorof
theformerofficialsupportbaseforthemaptodevelopLeagueofLegends.[21]UsingtheoriginalDotA
createdbyEul(theoriginalDefenceofTheAncientsmapforWarcraftIII:ReignofChaos)asabase,
GuinsoomadeDotAAllstarsbyinsertinghisownmixofcontent,greatlyexpandingthenumberofheroes,
addedrecipesanditems,andintroducedvariousgameplaychanges.Guinsoothenpassedversion6ofthe
mapontoanewdeveloper,IceFrog.
TheideaofaspiritualsuccessortoDefenseoftheAncientswasthatitwouldbeitsownstandalonegame
withitsownengine,ratherthananothermodofWarcraftIII,begantomaterializeattheendof2005.
LeagueofLegendswasborn"whenacoupleofveryactiveDotAcommunitymembersbelievedthatthe
gameplaywassomuchfunandsoinnovativethatitrepresentedthespawningofanewgenreanddeserved
tobeitsownprofessionalgamewithsignificantlyenhancedfeaturesandaroundgameservices."[22]
RiotGamesofficiallyopeneditsofficeinSeptember2006,andcurrentlyhasover1,000peopleworkingon
LeagueofLegends.AccordingtoMarcMerrill,whencreatingthevariouschampionsinthegame,instead
ofleavingthechampioncreationtojustafewpeople,theydecidedtoopenupthechampioncreation
processtoeveryoneinthecompanybaseduponatemplatewheretheycouldvoteonwhichchampions
madeitintothegame.
LeagueofLegendswasfirstannouncedonOctober7,2008.ItwasinaclosedbetafromApril10,2009,to
October22,2009.Itthentransitionedtoopenbetauntilrelease.[23][24]

InEurope,RiotGameshassignedaninternationallicensingpartnershipwithGOA,thevideogames
departmentofOrange'sContentDivisionandEurope'slargestgamingportal.OnOctober13,2009,GOA
andRiotannouncedthattheywouldstartchannelingserveraccessforplayerslocatedinEuropetoGOA's
