INTRODUCTION
The Auto Labe Model 560 is a rugged and dependable, cost-effective semi-automatic labeling
machine designed to easily Tamp labels on flat and slightly curved product containers. The unit
is simple to operate and is a much quicker and more precise alternative to hand labeling. The
standard unit employs Auto Labes proven Model 280 Label Applier integrated with an electropneumatically operated Tamp mechanism. The unit is operated via foot switch and is small
and lightweight enough for tabletop use. Products are manually loaded one at a time, labeled
and then removed. The versatile Model 560 can be adapted with custom Product Fixtures to
accommodate tapered and irregularly shaped containers. The unit can label a broad spectrum
of products ranging from small cosmetic containers to large plastic jugs.
This manual is in two parts. Part One covers the Model 560 Base Unit, and Part Two covers the
Model 280 Label Applier.
Specifications
Figure 2, Dimensions
The Model 560 Semi-Automatic Tamp Label Applicator is comprised of two main components:
- The 560 Base Unit, which includes the pneumatic components, a Product Fixture to
hold the product, along with a Tamp Assembly.
- The Model 280 Label Applier, which dispenses the label out onto the Tamp Head.
Note: Though the system is comprised of two units, when assembled, the system is
designated the Model 560.
10
Tamp Home Switch Consists of a Plunger switch operated by the Thruster when it retracts.
This tells the unit the Tamp Head has returned to the Home position and initiates the Applier to
feed a label onto the Tamp Head.
Tamp Head Assembly The component that receives the dispensed label from the Applier
and places it on the product. The label is held on to the head by vacuum transmitted via an
array of tiny holes in the head. The contact surface may be made of foam rubber or Delrin.
Vacuum Line Fitting A air fitting that connects a section of clear flexible tubing that transmits
the vacuum from the Vacuum Generator to the Tamp Head Assembly.
Air Assist Tube- A small pipe with a series of aligned holes from which compressed air exits to
aid in transferring the dispensed label onto the Tamp Head.

Unpack the unit from the shipping container. Inspect the unit and report any shipping
damage or missing items to Auto Labe or your distributor immediately.
Inventory the package contents. At a minimum, the shipping container should have:
a. Model 560
b. Feed Wheel Assembly
c. Foot Switch Assembly
In addition the Model 550 should include:
d. Air Filter Assembly
e. 10 Supply Air Hose
f. 3 Connection Hose with Fitting
g. *Custom Tamp Head Assembly
h. *Custom Product Fixture
Note: A Tamp Head and Product Fixture will be attached to the Model 560. Additional Tamp
Heads and Product Fixtures may also be in the shipping container depending on if additional
products were setup for the machine to run. Some Tamp Heads and Product Fixtures are
designed to be capable of running more than one product. The Thruster will have one of the
Lock Collars adjusted to keep the Thruster in the up or Home position during shipping.
Loosen the Allen screw on the Lock Collar, slide it up to align it with the Lock Collar on
the opposite side of the Thruster.
3.
Install the Feed Wheel Assembly by inserting two -20 socket head cap screws with
lock washers as shown in the following Figure.
Install the Air Filter Assembly using one #10 socket head cap screw with lock and flat
washers as shown in the above Figure.

It is typically custom manufactured for a specific product. When the product is placed in
the Product Fixture, it should be properly positioned with respect to the label on the
Tamp Head. When the Tamp Head is lowered onto the product the label is placed
correctly on the product. Product Fixtures vary considerably but normally have screws
that fasten them to the unit which allow adjusting their position front to back and side to
side. This aids in getting proper label placement. Once repetitive and consistent label
placement is achieved on the Tamp Head, the product position is adjusted via the
Product Fixture Adjustment to ensure the Tamp Head delivers the label to the desired
location on the product. In doing so, the Thruster Flow Control valves and Tamp Dwell
potentiometer may require adjustment.
21
22
for proper operation. The Tamp Head must be parallel with the Stripper Plate. (See
following diagram) Also, the Tamp Head is typically positioned about 1/16 to 1/8-inch
horizontally away and 1/32 to 1/16-inch vertically below the level of the Stripper Plate.
The fasteners that hold the cylinder to the frame are located in slotted openings that
permit adjusting for these parameters. Use a level (with the system on a level surface)
to aid in ensuring the Tamp Head is parallel to the Stripper Plate. The Tamp Cylinder
must be in the fully raised or Home position before adjusting.

If the sensor cannot be adjusted to accomplish the above, check the sensor to
determine if a piece of label is stuck in the sensor and that the web passes correctly
through the sensors slot. A ratchet handle locks the sensor and its bracket in place.
Properly aligned on the Stripper Plate, the label should be back from the Stripper Plates
edge no more than the gap between labels. Ideally, the labels leading edge should be
at the edge of the Stripper Plate or flagged (extend pass the edge) up to 1/8 inch.
When the sensor and sensor bracket are properly aligned, the web and labels should
pass freely through the sensor without rubbing hard against any surface. Several
problems may occur if the web and labels rub against the side of the sensor.
1. Labels may strip off the liner and remain in the sensor, blocking detection of the
web without a label.
2. The web may tear.
3. Excessive drag may interfere with the operation of the motor.
54
55
56
2.
NOTE: TURN OFF MACHINE AND DISCONNECT POWER BEFORE PROCEEDING. REMOVE TOP
COVER.
3.
4.
4.2 Have power and motor runs, but applier does not operate
1.
NOTE: TURN OFF MACHINE AND DISCONNECT POWER BEFORE PROCEEDING. REMOVE TOP
COVER.
2.
3.
4.
Are all set screws in the sprockets directly over the "flats" on the
shaft, and tight?
If YES, go to #5.
If NO, correct deficiency, replace the cover and try the applier.
5.
Are the setscrews in the drive roller directly over the flats on
the drive shaft tight?
57
Is the applier properly webbed with a portion of the labels passing between the
star wheel and the stripper plate?
If YES, go to #2.
If NO, web the machine as described in Section 2.2 Installing
The Labels. Insure that the label passes between the star wheel
and the stripper plate.
2.
Is the setscrew in the take up wheel tightened directly over the flat on the take up wheel shaft?
If YES, go to #2.
If NO, tighten the setscrew directly over the flat on the take up
wheel shaft.
3.
4.
Is there sufficient tension on the spring that presses the clutch pad to the disc?
If YES, contact the manufacturer or a service representative.
If NO, adjust the tension on the take up wheel clutch as described in the "Adjustments" section of
this manual. Replace
cover and try applier.
