Norwegian speakers compare qualities expressed in adjectives. This

is similar to English: big---bigger---biggest.

In general, Norwegian adjectives use -ere to compare two objects,
and -est(e) to show the superlative.
STANDARD
pen 'beautiful'
fin 'fine'
hoey 'tall'

COMPARATIVE
penere
finere
hoeyere

SUPERLATIVE
penest

hoeyest

ex.) Jeg er hoeyere enn broren min. (I am taller than my brother.)

Jeg er hoeyest. (I am tallest.)
(I am the tallest
girl in my class.)
Exceptions to this pattern frequently have a different vowel in
the comparative/superlative forms:
STANDARD
stor 'big'
ung 'young'

COMPARATIVE
stoerre
yngre

SUPERLATIVE
stoerst
yngst

ex.) Jeg er yngre enn deg. (I am younger than you.)

Jeg er yngst (I am the youngest.)
Jeg er den yngste gutten i nabolaget. (I am the youngest boy
in my neighborhood.)
Several other common adjectives use different roots altogether (compare to
English good, better, best):
STANDARD
COMPARATIVE
SUPERLATIVE
god 'good'
bedre
best
daarlig 'bad'
verre
verst
liten 'little'
mindre

MORE ON ADJECTIVES
You will recall that normally ADJECTIVES agree with the number

some fine clocks.)

There are several exceptions to this general pattern.

Adjectives that end in -ig (or -lig) and adjectives that end in

ansatte. Tilsammen vil over hundre personer paa flere utesteder
miste jobben.
alle skal ha like aapningstider. Det vil si at alkoholservering
stenger klokken ett om natten paa hverdager og klokken to i
helgene.
----------------------------------------------------------------NYHETER FRA P4 PAA ENGELSK (News from P4 in English):
In Bergen, several restaurants that serve alcohol until 2:30 in
the morning, must do a mass dismissal of their employees.
Altogether, over one hundred people at several bars and restaurants
will lose their jobs. The reason is the new alcohol regulations
which state that everyone is supposed to have the same opening
times. That means that the serving of alcohol stops at one
o'clock in the morning on weekdays and at two o'clock on the
weekends. The restaurants expect that their business will be
reduced by 30 to 40 percent as a result of the decision,
according to Bergens Tidende.

veldig pent her.
for aa spise frokost.
hoeye bygningene i San Francisco.
vunnet "Super Bowl" kampen i amerikansk fotball fire ganger.

POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS express ownership or relationship. In
Norwegian, they have the following characteristics:
1) The possessive pronoun occurs most commonly after the noun.
ex.) faren MIN (my father)
2) The noun is in the definite form
ex.) farEN min (my father)

3) The possessive pronouns "my" and "your" agree in gender and

number with the nouns they modify.
ex.) faren MIN, tanta MI, barnet MITT, broedrene MINE
faren DIN, tanta DI, barnet DITT, broedrene DINE
4) Occasionally, you will see the possessive pronoun in front of
the noun. When in this position, it emphasizes who owns the
object. The noun is in the indefinite form when the possessive
pronoun precedes it.

HVITE RUSSLAND - TSJEKKIA
i fotball i kveld.
Hvite Russland 2-0. Hvis Nederland slaar Malta foerstkommende
onsdag, maa Norge vinne over Nederland for aa komme til EM.
uavgjort for aa bli nummer to i gruppa. Blir vi nummer 2, maa vi
sannsynligvis spille kvalifisering om siste ledige EM plass.
----------------------------------------------------------------NYHETER FRA P4 PAA ENGELSK (News from P4 in English):
WHITE RUSSIA - CZECH REPUBLIC
(P4): Norway didn't get any help from White Russia in the
qualifying for the European Championship in soccer tonight. That
is clear after the Czech Republic has beaten White Russia 2-0.
If the Netherlands beats Malta this coming Wednesday, Norway must
beat the Netherlands in order to qualify for the European
Championship. If Malta gets points against the Netherlands on
their home field, then Norway can get by with a tie in order to
become number two in the group. If we become number two, we will
probably have to play a qualifying game for the last slot in the
European Championship.

In earlier lessons, you have learned the NUMBERS in Norwegian
from 1-1000. But in Norway today, there are actually two ways of
counting which are in common use. You have learned the new system
which is taught in the schools, but many people still use the old
system which stems from Danish. The main differences are:

1. Some numbers have completely different words for them

sju / syv, tjue / tyve, tretti / tredve, foerti / foerr
2. Numbers larger than 20, such as 25, are counted as
five and twenty instead of twentyfive.

You will recall that there are both STRONG VERBS and WEAK VERBS
in Norwegian. The past tense forms of strong verbs have a vowel
change in the stem of the verb, while the past tense forms of
weak verbs have a regular ending (-te, -et, -dde, -dd) added to
them. The best way to learn the past tense of strong verbs is to
memorize the forms, but the best way to learn the past tense of
weak verbs is to learn the four classes of weak verbs and the

Hei!

four times as high as in Denmark, according to a study which
Scanfact has done. In addition, it appears that Norwegians know
more about cod liver oil than people in the other Nordic countries.

RELIGIOESE MINORITETER IKKE GODTATT

RELIGIOUS MINORITIES NOT ACCEPTED
(P4): The leader for the Antiracist Center, Khalid Salimi, thinks
that the proposal for a new Christianity subject (in the schools),
shows that religious minorities are not accepted in Norway. The
Labor Party, the Center Party, and the Christian People's Party
assure a majority for the subject plan, which gives students with
foreign religions very small possibilities for exemption. The
leader for the Organization Against Public Discimination, Oddvar
de Leon, shares Salimi's disappointment -- and says it should be
simple to offer immigrants instruction in their individual

FINNMARKS-BARN PAA ALLERGITOPPEN

gjort.
industrien i Nikkel i naerheten. Men inneklimaet er viktigst: det
skaper ideelle forhold for allergi naar finnmarkingene roeyker

Children in Finnmark county (in Northern Norway) suffer from
more allergies, eczema, and asthma than anyone else here in the

according to a study which Dr. Lars Kaare Dotterud at the Regional
Hospital in Tromsoe has done. The study also shows that pollution
is important -- especially on the Varanger peninsula, with the
South-Varanger smelting works and the industry in Nikkel nearby.
But the climate inside is the most important. It creates ideal
conditions for allergies when people from Finnmark smoke more,
have more pets and stay inside more - in houses with poor

enn i andre monarkier.
vaar tredje konge siden selvstendigheten i 1905 (Kong Haralds
bestefar, kong Haakon, var opprinnelig dansk.) Mottoet/slagordet
foer monarkiet blir avskaffet i Norge.

----------------------------------------------------------------The royal family is seen by most Norwegians as being good
representatives and "advertisement" for our long country in the
north. Vi have, of course, in many ways, been an out of the way
place in Europe until the middle of this century, so that the
royal family, possibly for that reason, has become a part of us
to a larger degree than in other monarchies. In addition, we have
been fortunate to have had very human and popular kings. King
Harald is our third king since the independence in 1905 (King
Harald's grandfather, King Haakon, was originally Danish.) The
motto/slogan for all three of them was/is "Everything for Norway,"
and they have shown this in practice in a warm and nice way.
(Among other things, King Harald regularly holds an audience with
Norwegians who are on the fringes of Norwegian society, and tries

in that way to encourage them.) There was great sorrow in Norway

when our former king, Olav, died -- it was, by the way, the day
after the Gulf War broke out. Everyone was interested to see
whether the current royal couple would manage to capture people's
hearts in the same way as King Olav, and it appears that they
have been successful in doing that.
Some (few, I imagine) are against the monarchy, and the most
radical representatives in the Parliament say this openly and
want to start a debate about whether the monarchy is out of date
and a waste of tax money. They ask what we are doing with a
royal family, when they do no have any real power. In addition,
they think that the representation they do for Norway does not
have any meaning, when there, for example, are individuals
within the fields of sports and music who do this job better.
In my opinion, I think the royal family is so well anchored in
most Norwegians' hearts, that it will take very many years before
the monarchy is abolished in Norway.
If there is someone who has questions about the royal family,
please get in contact with me.
Greetings Hilde <Hilde.Gustavsen@hamarlh.no>

CLINTON TOO LATE FOR THE ROYAL COUPLE

(P4): King Harald and Queen Sonja were left standing rather
helpless when they were going to meet USAs President Bill Clinton
outside the White House in Washington yesterday evening. Bill
Clinton wasn't there, namely, and a secretary had to rescue the
royal couple and bring them into the White House. Five minutes
later they came out again, together with Hillary and Bill Clinton,
so that the photographers could take the official welcome picture.
STRICTER PUNISHMENTS IN THE SCHOOL
(P4): The Conservative Party's education spokesman, Jan Tore
Sanner, wants to have increased use of detention, extra homework,
and physical work at school as the consequences for disobedient
students. -- The school's problem is the "let it ride - philosophy"
of the 1968-generation, which has caused continual moving of
limits, says Sanner to the Arbeiderbladet newspaper. Sanner sets
forth the demands in connection with the new curriculum for the
elementary and junior high schools.

L=D8NNSOMME PASIENTER FAAR HJELP FOERST
(P4): Pasienter som sykehusene tjener penger paa, blir prioritert
fremfor de som trenger hjelp mest. Det mener sosiolog og forsker
ved Universitetet i Tromsoe, Olaug Lian. Hun sier til Bergens

QUEBEC STILL PART OF CANADA
(P4): Quebec will still be a part of Canada. That is clear after
yesteday's referendum, where the no-side won by a close margin -50.6 percent of the votes. The separatists' leader, Lucien
Bouchard, was disappointed, and said that the democracy had
spoken -- but at the same time reminded his supporters that there
soon might be a new chance to make Quebec independent.
PROFITABLE PASIENTS GET HELP FIRST
(P4): Patients which the hospitals make money on, are being
prioritized in front of those who need help the most. That is the
opinion of sociologist and researcher at the University of Tromsoe,
Olaug Lian. She says to the newspaper Bergens Tidende that equality
and fairness for the patients is being replaced by insensitivity
and efficiency.
