----------------------------------------------------------------EN NY HJELPELAERER FOR NORWORD (A New Tutor for NorWord)
NorWord now has another tutor from Norway. Her name is Hilde
Gustavsen, and she is also a student at Hamar Teachers College,
just like our other tutor, Solvaar Gully. Both of our tutors will
be writing some short texts for the NorWord lessons, correcting
homework, and proofreading lessons. They are also interested in
corresponding with subscribers.

Jeg heter Hilde Gustavsen og er 4. aars-student ved Hamar
laererhoegskole. Jeg er 24 aar og bor i Hamar. Mine interesser er
mange, og jeg er av den typen som liker aa ha mange jern i ilden,
som det heter. Jeg
trener i helsestudio, driver med aerobic/dans,
er vikar paa en ungdomsskole her i Hamar (7.-9. klasse),
jobber paa et behandlingshjem for barn med psykiske problemer,
laerer meg ogsaa aa spille gitar (jeg kan ikke leve uten
musikk -- syntes derfor det var paa tide aa laere aa
beherske et instrument selv),
liker aa spille teater,
liker aa sitte paa kafe, snakke og filosofere,
liker aa male, skrive dikt og drive med haandarbeid,

NAMDAL POLITIKAMMER FIKK TOPPGEVINST PAA LOTTO

Norway is a constitutional monarchy, but in practice the Norwegian
king has little direct political power. Instead the king and his
family serve as a symbol of national unity to the people of Norway
and as ambassadors for Norwegian culture, products, and lifestyle
to people in other countries.
>From October 7-31, Their Majesties King Harald V and Queen Sonja
will be on an official visit to the United States. Below is a
list of their travel schedule and some of the highlights of the
events on their visit.
Oct. 7-11: New York City
Visit the United Nations and meet with Secretary-General Boutros
Boutros-Ghali.
King Harald gives the opening speech at a business conference
entitled, "Our Environment: Promise and Profit, The Norwegian
Experience."
Queen Sonja will open an exhibition of paintings by Norwegian
artists Harald Sohlberg and Edvard Munch.
King Harald addresses the official opening of an exhibit of the
Norwegian Emergency Perparedness System (NOREPS).
Visit the exhibition "When Cod was King" at the South Seaport
Museum, Ellis Island, Governor's Island, and the New York
Stock Exchange.
Queen Sonja will visit the Norwegian Seaman's Church
Oct. 12-16: Washington D.C.
Attend a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.
Inspect the Youth for Understanding Center.
Visit NATO's Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic headquarters.
Attend a concert of the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra at Kennedy
Center.
Queen Sonja will attend the official opening of the Norwegian
Visions exhibition "At Century's End" at the National Museum
of Women in the Arts.
Oct. 17-18: Chicago
Visit the Norwegian-American Hospital, two senior citizens'
centers and the Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church.
King Harald opens a second business conference, "USA and Norway
as High Tech Partners."
Oct. 19-20: Minneapolis-St.Paul (and surrounding area)
Visit St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN; Luther College in
Decorah, IA; Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN; and
Concordia College in Moorhead, MN.

In honor of the former King Haakon VII who was Danish, today we
are including a text by one of our Danish subscribers. You will
notice that some of the spellings and words are different in
Danish, but most of you should be able to understand the main
ideas in his text.
Mit navn er Christian, jeg skriver fra Koebenhavn, Danmark. Jeg
er 37 aar gammel, gift og har et dejligt pigebarn paa 4 aar. Jeg
arbejder som engelsk/dansk oversaetter for en stoerre amerikansk
virksomhed. For tiden bor jeg i det hus Ludvig Holberg (Bergensisk
forfatter og grundlaegger af det Kongelige Teater her i byen)
havde som professorbolig (for 200 aar siden) overfor universitetsbiblioteket paa den anden side af gaden.
Jeg taler ikke norsk, men bliver forstaaet i Norge. Jeg laeser

SKOLEVOLD: FORELDRE MAA TA ANSVAR
(P4): Foreldre maa ta ansvar for at skoleelever opptrer som
boeller overfor medelever og laerere. Det mener rektor Sven Erik
Neumeyer ved Midtstuen skole i Oslo, som i kveld har innkalt til
krisemoete om skolevold. Flere av hans elever er blitt banket opp

(P4): The leader for the Antiracist Center, Khalid Salimi, thinks
that the proposal for a new Christianity subject (in the schools),
shows that religious minorities are not accepted in Norway. The
Labor Party, the Center Party, and the Christian People's Party
assure a majority for the subject plan, which gives students with
foreign religions very small possibilities for exemption. The
leader for the Organization Against Public Discimination, Oddvar
de Leon, shares Salimi's disappointment -- and says it should be
simple to offer immigrants instruction in their individual

(P4): Children in Longyearbyen in Spitsbergen now receive a free
ride on the school bus after all - after to people were killed
by polar bears earlier this year. The leadership at Longyearbyen
school har wanted such an arrangement for many years, but because
the students live closer than four kilometers from the school,
they have not had the right to this. In addition to the polar
darkness and extreme weather conditions, it is the increase in the
number of polar bears around Longyearbyen which has caused the
department to change its policy.

I stua mi har jeg norske furumoebler. Alt er kjoept av Soenner av
Norge paa grunn av at jeg bor i Honve Huset/Skandinavisk kultur
senter ved universitetet i Nord Dakota i Grand Forks. Vi har to
lenestoler, en hjoernesofa, og en vanlig sofa. Det er ogsaa to
kaffebord, et rundt og et firkantet. Teppet i stua, spisestua, og
hovedgangen er et gammelt stygt roedt "shag" som var populaert
tidlig paa 1970-tallet! Den aller beste tingen som staar i stua er
ei fin rosemalt klokke. Jeg synes at den er toeff!
Som sagt, jeg bor i Honve Huset (oppkalt etter mannen som kjoepte
huset). Jeg er vaktmester, og det betyr at jeg tar vare paa huset.
Vi har ogsaa et bibliotek av boeker fra hele Skandinavia. Stua er
hvor vaar Skandinaviske klubb moetes, og vi spiser vafler, groet,
smoerbroed, og drikker masse kaffe, te, saft og brus. Det er
koselig naar vi har mange paa besoek, saa hvis du vil, skriv til
meg og kom paa besoek!

CLINTON FOR SEN FOR KONGEPARET
(P4): Kong Harald og dronning Sonja ble staaende heller raadloese
da de skulle moete USAs president Bill Clinton utenfor det hvite
hus i Washington i gaar kveld. Ved inngangen manglet nemlig -Bill Clinton, og en sekretaer maatte redde kongeparet inn i huset.
Fem minutter senere kom de ut igjen, sammen med Hillary og Bill
Clinton, for at fotografene skulle faa det offisielle velkomstbildet.
STRENGERE STAFFER I SKOLEN
(P4): Hoeyres skolepolitiske talsmann, Jan Tore Sanner, vil ha
oekt bruk av gjensitting, straffelekser eller fysisk arbeid paa
skolen som reaksjonsform mot ulydige elever. -- Skolens problem
er "la det skure-filosofien" til 68-generasjonen, som har foert
til stadig flytting av grenser, sier Sanner til Arbeiderbladet.
Sanner setter fram kravene i forbindelse med den nye laereplanen
for grunnskolen.
