Dhanvantari stavan(Prayer)
We start our day or any work with remembering the God Ganesh , likewise in Ayurveda before starting any
Function or ritual ,we pray to God Dhanvantari. Related to any work of Ayurveda whether it will be the
beginning of seminar or studies we pray to God Dhanvantari.
The way of praising God helps us to increase our self confidence & concentration
The people who follow Ayurveda consider God Dhanvantari as their role model.
Due to recalling Dhanvantari one can increase its will power, concentration, and makes mind fresh and
clam.
Keeping all this benefits of Dhanvantari Prayer , one should recall the Prayer before beginning of any work.

Dhanvantari stavan ( Prayer) :

Shankam chakram jalouka dadhta amrut ghat chru dourbhis charturbhihi
susham swavcha aatirudya anshuka parivilasan maulimam ambhoj netram
kalan bhodo jawlagam kati tat vilasat chru pitambaradhyam
vande dhanvantarintam nikilgadavan praudh davagni nilam
In the above prayer we will try to understand the essence of the prayer rather understanding the meaning of
each and every word :
1. In the first line of the prayer there is description of 4 tools ,which Dhanvantari holds - i.e- Shank,
Chakra, Jalauka, Amrut ghat . (charu- beautiful, daurbhi-hand charutbhi-four) .These 4 things are
like tools for maintaining health of the person and getting rid of different diseases

2. Here we can symbolize 'shank ' means pleasant sound. Shankha or conch is blown before
beginning of any ritual in the Temple . Conch or Shankha gives protection from all the harmful things
which spread through the medium of air . Shankha indicates importance of Sound vibrations & also
of Mantra Chikitsa .Each Doctor must use very sweet language for counseling the patient .
3. Chakra ,i.e Sudarshan Chakra is mentioned as a weapon hold by Lord Krishna for killing Bad
people in the battle .Similarly Doctor has a Power wheel of his Intelligence ,by which he can kill or
control Disease Pathology .
4. 'Jalauka' i.e non poisonous Leeches are used in Ayurveda to remove Toxic Blood .So Leech is a
representation of all Detoxifying process ( Panchakarma) mentioned in Ayurveda .
5. Amruta Ghata or Pot of Ambrosia is a water ,which is drunk to live longer .So this pot represents
the utility of Doctor's Medicines to control diseases & to give longer & better life to patient .
In 2nd and 3rd line of prayer , gracefulness of Dhanvantari is described. Eyes of Dhanvantari are
compared with the beauty of lotus. Similarly Doctor's first look must be pleasant & assuring to patient.
In 3rd line, mainly, skin complexion and dress of Dhanvantari are described. Appearance of God
Dhanvantari is a pleasant .His complexion is bright & shiny. He dress ups in soft & clean bright yellow
cloth. By these lines Doctor must understand the importance of well dressed nice personality.
As forest fire ( In Sanskrit it is called Vadavanal) destroys the whole forest, similarly, God Dhanvantari has
the capacity to destroy the diseases from the body. So we salute God Dhavantari & pray for getting such

the capacity to destroy the diseases from the body. So we salute God Dhavantari & pray for getting such
personality, Knowledge & skills like Him !!
By understanding symbolic meanings of the words from Prayer we will try to chant it for getting more
benefits.
May God Dhanvantari Bless all of us !!
Note --- Personally I feel --- whenever we chant Dhanvantari Prayer ,we must try to do Introspection .We
should try to remember the symbolic meaning of each word or each line .So this prayer should be like a
Meditation ,done by ourselves .This can be done by sitting quiet ,closing the eyes ,calming the mind .
So I personally feel that In the seminars or Public functions ,it is not necessary to stand immediately & start
chanting prayer ,as like ritual or mechanical process .Rather friends ,Anchor of the function can appeal to
audience to sit quietly & calm & chant prayer like a Meditation .Only standing ( & not knowing the symbolic
meaning) will not show that you are respectful to God Dhanvantari .Prayer is not a show business .Prayer
is a dialogue with our soul or Inner conscious .Am I right ?
