PMK Founder Dr. S. Ramadoss Statement

Media should break its silence

to expose the corrupt government
The functioning of the Tamil Nadu government is a classic example of how a govenrment
should not function in a democratic set up.
Corruption everywhere
Every where corruption, smuggling of rare earths and minerals, murder of democracy in
the assembly and no freedom of speech. Thus whatever is needed for a worst govenrment is
present in today's Tamil Nadu government.
There is no department which is not involved in corruption. It is difficult to find a department
which is not steeped in corruption. Prizes worth several crores can be awarded if a person
finds a department where there is no corruption. To that extent corruption has spread in the
state.
From procurement of eggs to providing power to industries there has been fraud to the
extent of several crores. For a work to happen in the government, there is an open demand for
a percentage as commission. Smuggling of rare earths and minerals is happening with the
collusion of ruling partymen.
The report on smuggling of rare earths is still in the woods and the government has
refused to make it public. Despite a government ban, the smuggling of rare earths is hapenning
clandestinely with its support and the minerals are also exported. But the government denies
any such happening.
The PMK in a memorandum to the Governor listed 18 charges against the government
and wanted a probe commission to look into it.Despite this, the ruling partymen did not mend
their ways of functioning and instead in an arrogant manner said they know how to put such
memorandums in the dustbins.
Is it an assembly or a hall to sing praises
The assembly has been convered into a house for singing the praise of a single person. In
earlier days, poets used to sing in praise of the Kings and get emoluments. But in the
assembly, chief minister as well as his cabinet colleagues, praise their leader who is

convicted for corruption. They read the eulogies from a 80-page notebook. While opposition
which rise to highlight peoples' problems are asked to sit and they are not given proper chance
if they criticise the government. From evicting members from the house for the day who oppose government, the situation has changed to suspending them for the next session too.
Undeclared emergency
While this is the situation inside the assembly, outside it too there is unannounced Section
144 in place and people who defy this are booked under Goondas Act, National Security Act
and other tough acts. If opposition parties point out discrepancies in the government functioning, their leaders are taken to task with defamation cases filed against them. More than 100
defamation cases have been filed against me and other opposition leaders. Despite Supreme Court and High Court condemning frequent filing of defamation cases, it has not stopped.
Official apathy
Is there any government functioning in Tamil Nadu? To that extent there is all round
confusion and chaos. Efficient officers have been pushed to the background and officers who
sing hosanas of the ruling party have been brought to the limelight. Retired officials have
been rehabilitated and given prime positions.
Honest officials are pushed to the level of committing suicide. In the last 46 months, more
than 8000 murders, 81,000 robberies, 4,700 sexual harassment cases have been taken place
making the law and order a mockery.
Poojas and yagas daily
Ruling partymen are indulging in daily yagas and poojas to bring back a corruption- convict
as chief minister. By violating the constitution and bypassing the oath of secrecy, the chief
minister announces in the assembly that it is only under the guidance of a corruption accused
the budget has been prepared. It is only the people who are victims.
Will the courts re-establish justice
The courts must fast track the corruption cases against ruling partymen and deliver
judgments then and there. For people they will have to wait for 5 years to effect a change of
government but courts can do it then and there.
Media silent
Why is the media silent. On the one side, the voices of the media is stifled and on the other
plethora of defamation cases are filed. But it is said that media is silent without highlighting

the flaws of the government. Though at the media people wants to expose the government's
shortcomings, it is only rulers who stop from publishing these reports.
Media drove out Britishers
It is only due to the publications of the events during freedom movement in papers like
Sudesamitran, India, Desabakthan, Sudesabhimani, Tamil Nadu, The Hindu, The Indian
Express, Dinamani. Though many of us would not have read the articles then, we have seen
how media played during the freedom movement. Even during the 1991-96 rule, papers like
The Hindu, The Indian Express, Dinamani, Dinamalar created an awareness among people
about the happening then and defeated the incumbent government and this we have all seen.
2001-2006 rule
The government between 2001-2006 saw more than 10 times corruption and draconian
rule. One single night more than 2 lakh government employees were dismissed, people's
rights were denied, increase in the tariff of power and bus fares, steps against farmers and it
is only after media highlighted all these, the ruling party tasted a historical defeat in the 2004
Lok Sabha polls and the debacle continued in the 2006 Assembly polls too.
The right time
Currently, corruption is 100 times more when the media should expose these shortcomings, is it fair for the media to maintain silence, it should ponder.
This is the correct time for the media to break its silence. Even after this if the media does
not perform its duty, as actor Rajinikanth said, even God cannot save Tamil Nadu. Thus
media should come forward to highlight the fraud of the AIADMK government and this will be
the greatest service by media for the hapless people currently struggling.

Yours,

(Dr. S.Ramadoss)
