Instructional Design of Media and Technology in Teaching Using ASSURE Model
1.0 Overview
The 21st century has shown a lot of changing into world that give challenges in education field
especially for the teacher. The learning style has change from traditional chalk and talk method
form the teacher to the students center which the teacher as facilitator, assist them in teaching
and learning. Therefore, the approaches to learning play importance role which both learner and
the instructor or teacher has to participate in deliver the content of the knowledge. Thus, the
instructions are the arrangement of information and the environment to facilitate learning.
Instructional design is a system or process of organizing learning resources to ensure
learners achieve established learning outcomes which is essentially a framework for learning
(Siemens, 2002). There are varieties of teaching approaches can be used in the lesson such as
cooperative learning, game, simulation, role-play, presentation and demonstration. All this
approaches need to cooperate in instructional system by using the media that can be classify
into audio, visuals, motion media, manipulatives and people (Smaldino, S. E. ,2005). All this
media need to be run by technology medium such as CD- Player, Computer, LCD projector,
interactive board and relias model. To put in all this approaches and mediums in lesson, the
teacher need instructional model that help teacher to plan systematically such as ASSURE
model.
According to (Gustafson & Branch, 2002) Instructional design models were classified as
classroom oriented, product oriented and system oriented. ASSURE instructional design model
is one of the classroom-oriented model that it is frequently used by teachers in schools because
it is for a few hours of instruction and for each individual (Bahar Baran, 2010). ASSURE model
has been created incorporates the events of the instruction by Gagns research that revealed
about well-design lesson begin with the arousal of students interest and then move on to
present new material, involve students in practice with feedback, assess their understanding,
and go on to follow-up activities (Gagn,1985 as cited in Smaldino, S. E, (2005). According to
Smaldino, S. E. (2005), ASSURE model is a procedural guide for planning and conducting
instruction that incorporates media and technology by assumes that training or instruction is
required. There six step in this model which are analyze learners, state objectives, select
methods, media, and materials, utilize media and material, require learner participation, and
evaluate and revise.

2.1 Analyzing Characteristics

General Characteristic
Participants in this class are standard nine pupils. The class is limited to thirty pupils (n=30) with
beginner, intermediate and advance learner level of proficiency.
Entry Characteristic
The pupils should have basic knowledge on common understanding and observation about
technology that have been used at home and the surrounding. They should be able to explain
about computer parts.
Learning Style
This lesson will use methods that appeal to verbal, listening, pair work and individual work.
2.2 State Objectives
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
1.

listen to the sounds and guess four out of five sounds correctly.

listen and fill in eight out of ten blanks correctly.

3.

match five out of seven devices correctly.

2.3 Select Methods, Media and Materials

Methods
The teacher starts the lesson by showing a photo of innovation in technology. Then, teacher will
ask a few questions about it. Teacher plays a few sounds of computer appliances and asks

pupils to guest what do they heard. Teacher will share information about a desktop computer.
Pupils will look and listen to a video about a desktop computer. Then, they will listen to an audio
clip. While listening to the audio clip, pupils in pair will fill in the blank with the correct answer.
Individually, the pupils will match the devices with the correct function.
Media and Materials
PowerPoint presentation, audio and video will be used for interpretation. The task sheets will be
used as the teaching aids.
2.4 Utilizing Media and Materials
Preview the Materials
The teacher masters the content on the topic before introducing it to the pupils. She fully
reviews on the component of the computer and its functions. She also prepared herself with
unpredictable questions or answers from the pupils.
Prepare the Materials
The teacher has to ensure that the audio, the video and the presentation text are ready and
functioning before start the lesson. All the materials are using Standard English and
authentically to be used in the lesson. The teacher also has to ensure the task sheets are
sufficient and printed well to be distributing to the pupils.
Prepare the Environment
The teacher must make sure the classroom is ready to have teaching and learning process.
Teacher has to ensure the adequate lighting, good ventilations, and chair as well as table
arrangement in good condition. Teacher also has to make sure the pupils are ready to learn.
Prepare the Learner
The lesson will start by showing a photo of innovation in technology related to the technology in
home. By guessing the sound clips, the pupils able to trigger their mind on what they going to
learn today. Tasks sheets will be distributed along the lesson to enhance pupils attention and
understanding.

2.5 Require Leaner Participation

Set Induction (5 minute)
Focus skill: speaking
Teacher shows a photo of innovation in technology. Then, the teacher asks a few questions
about it. The pupils answer about technology gadgets that have been used in their house. The
pupils should able to answer a simple gadget such as television, radio, and fan.
Pre-listening (15 minute)

Focus skills: listening & speaking

The teacher asks the pupils listen to sound and try to guess the sound. The pupils must be able
to guess the sounds of speaker, keyboard, mouse, printer and the CD/DVD drive. Then the
teacher shows the answers and talk about the stimulus by describes the component of desktop
computer. The objective of this stage is able to listen to the sounds and guess four out of five
sounds correctly.
While-listening (20 minute)

Focus skills: listening & writing

Pupils watch a video about the component of a desktop computer. The purpose is to help the
beginner and intermediate learner to have a better understanding. Then, the teacher distributes
a task sheet about desktop computer cloze-text. Pupils to listen to an audio clip that will be play
on three times. In pair, the pupils will fill in the blank while listening to the audio. The objective of
this stage is to be able to listen and fill in eight out of ten blanks correctly.
Post-listening (20 minute)

Focus skills: listen & writing

Teacher distributes a match task sheets about the computer device and its functions. Then,
teacher asks the pupils to match the device and its functions. Individually, the pupils do the task

and discuss the answer with the teacher. The objective of this stage is to be able to match five
out of seven devices correctly.
Closure (5 minute)

Focus skills: listen & speaking

Pupils share on what they have learned today. Then, they will label the component of desktop
computer on screen.
2.6 Evaluate and Revise
The lesson will close with a brief summary about what the lesson by the teacher. Question and
answer method will be used for evaluation. The question will include:
a) What did you learn today?
b) Can you help me to label the component of desktop computer?
