Montage
Description:

An insperational montage made by the blending of two or more images,

and the use of typography.

Date:

Course/Instructor:

Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers.

Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

I began my design with the quote from CS lewis. I then found an image
of a young boy sleeping and a cloudy sky. I placed both these images in
photoshop and created a mask for both layers. I then proceeded to blend
the two layer together. I did so by used the paint brush at 30% opacity. This
allowed better control. I wanted the young boy to appear to be sleeping
on the clouds. I then found three more images on the internet. The dragon
and the knight were from the same image. I duplicated the layers and used
the lasso tool to cut out the knight and the dragon. Part of the knights arm
was missing so I used the stamp tool to create an elbow for him. I resized
the dragon and the knight using the transform tool. I also used the lasso
tool to cut out the princess and the castle. The castle originally had a red
flag. I used color selection to change the color to a red-violet shade. I also
enhance the color of the princess to make her more eye-catching. Lastly
I added mediaeval looking text in the bottom right corner to add to the
dream theme.

Since it is so likely that children

will meet cruel enemies, let them
at least have heard of brave
knights and heroic courage.

Objectives:

Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal

image.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:

My good friend Brianna hand makes custom fabric dolls

for her company called Friends of Suzy. I decided that
it would be a good idea to create a logo for her website.
As of now she uses a basic type face for her logo.
(friendsofsuzy.bigcartel.com) I based my first design
off of her actually dolls. I copied a photo of her dolls
from the internet and used the pen tool to trace along
the hair, face, hair bow, arms, dress and mouth. I then
created the eyes with the ellipse tool and the eyelashes
with the line segment tool. For the second logo I used
the pen tool to trace along a photograph of a bow. I
then took the bow and placed it on a blue background.
The contrast allows the bow to be more appealing to the
viewer. The last design is a simple circle and a white bow
created by the pen tool.

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:

In order to create the doll logo I took a picture of my friends

homemade dolls. I then uploaded that image to illustrator. In
Illustrator I created an outline of the doll using the pen tool.
After completing the outline of the image I added color and then
flipped the image. A friend of Suzy is a company that creates fabric
customizable dolls. I thought by flipping and adding different color
it would get that across to the viewer. I then created a banner with
rectangles. In order to create the ribbon like end of the banner I
used the white arrow to bring in the middle of the square. I curved
the banner and the text with the warp tool.
I used this logo for both the letterhead and the business cards. In
order to create the letterhead I used the same logo and fonts as
the business card in order to keep the design consistent. In order to
create the transparent image on the letter head I pushed the opacity
to 10%. I wanted it to be a bit dark in order to see the detail but
light enough to read text placed over the image.

Process:

I wanted my design to show that Houston is not only a city but also a
fun place to visit. I showed this idea through the colors and design.
On the front where to logo is located I used a simple gray. I choose
gray because this is a color associated with cities and large buildings.
I then decided that I wanted the inside to have a punch of color but
still blend in with the city feel. I choose to use blue-green and yellowgreen. These two colors reminded me of water and building windows. I
placed them in a fun triangle pattern.
I decided that I wanted to repeat the triangle background with the
images. I did so by placing the images in triangles in the top left
corner. I wanted to mimic the design in the bottom right corner and
did so with one single picture of downtown.
To create the cut out 3-d effect used helvetica for the type and used
an exact-o knife to cut out the text. I then placed the print of the other
side of the text. I wanted to give the cut out look with out actually
cutting the text all the way out.

Program(s)/Tools:

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use appropriate

typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier
layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign
document to keep links intact.

Process:

I sketched about eight different designs until I focused

on four. After resetting those four I decided to choose
on to be my starting position of my flier. I then used
Adobe Indesign to layout a rough idea of my design.
I then used the two boxes and lines as repetition and
asymmetry in my design. I also used different spacing
and alignments to give the viewer a way to separate
the information. I choose not to use outlined boxes
because I did not want to take away from the integrity of
the design. I also felt that by putting the copy text in a
outlined box then there would be too many boxes in the
design causing the layout to feel cramped.

use Word to create event ad

Process:

One of the requirements for this assignment was to successfully scan

professional looking images to be used in our flier. I knew I wanted to
creating a fundraiser involving quilts. I decided that comfort quilts would
be a great Idea. I flipped through my January/February Quilty magazine
and came across the image of the women with stack of quilts to her left.
I knew by using just the image of the woman my design would be too
simple. I found another image in the same magazine of a completed
quilt. I then sketched out ideas. After deciding my path I used word
to create my flier. I decided to use blue and orange and blue. Not
only are the complementary colors but they are used throughout the
background image of the quilt. I then found fonts I liked and used those
for the title and body to create the stitches along the edge I created a
round rectangle with no fill and a black dotted outline. This gave the
appearance as if the information was sewn on. My design has a lot of
though put into it. I hope you can see how all my hard work paid off.

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.

Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it
appeals to a target audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process:

In order to create the webpage, I used a HTML and CSS. HTML stands for
hyper-Text Mark up language and CSS stands for cascading style sheet.
When combined the results can be amazing. As a web Design Major I am
comfortable using HTML and CSS. I am no means ready to market my
skills but I will be there someday. In order to make the perfect design for
my page I opened the logo I made for my business cards. I then used the
eyedropper tool to identify what colors I had used for the design. I then
added those colors to the header. For the background I used an image
of dots. In order to create the images at the bottom of the page I made
a table. This is a way for me to showcase the products of Friends of Suzy.
Individuals will also be able to see where my inspiration came form.

Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels.
Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image.
Desaturate the selected portion of the image.
Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.

Process:

I found a bottle of mustard in my fridge with red, yellow, and green.I

set up two black poster boards set lamp on the ground and snapped
a photo of the bottle of mustard. I then uploaded my image into
photoshop. Here, I was able to manipulate the colors of the image
using the levels. I then used vibrance to give the image more
dimension. I then decided that I need to spruce up the certain colors
using the color selection tool. I used this tool to give more depth to
the green and yellow. I did not like the red at the bottom so I used the
brush tool to change the red to orange. I then added splashes with
the custom shapes tool. In order to get the perfect color I used the
eyedropper tool to select the existing colors on the bottle. In order to
have the right orange splash behind the mustard bottle I had to cut
out the bottle on one of the layers. This gave me the clean line in the
transition form splash to bottle.
