DougAllan,WildlifeCameraman
I recently spent two years in the Arctic filming the series Blue Planet. I love being in an
environment that hasnt changed for 20,000 years. Of course its freezing, but it must be a healthy
place because you never catch colds.
When I am filming, I like to really feel how lonely the environment is. Filming underwater
involves cutting through thick ice and diving in tied to a line. The person at the other end has to be
ready to pull you out fast if necessary.
Originally I was a research diver for the British Antarctic Survey project, but for me science
lacked excitement. Id always enjoy photography, and whenever camera teams passed through,
they encouraged me to watch and learn. I was then able to move into filming in 1985 and have
concentrated on Arctic and Antarctic wildlife ever since.
I prefer to be face to face with the animals Im filming. I havent got in the water with killer
whales yet, but I plan to. Of course, its dangerous if you choose the wrong moment. Theyre big
animals and can move fast, so Id be stupid to film them searching for food!

Perhaps they arent the most beautiful animals in the world but in the hot lands of North Africa
and the Middle East they are certainly one of the most useful. But how much do you know about
camels?
Camels normally live for about 40 years - but they usually stop working when they are about 25.
Camels dont normally like running - Its too hot - but when they need to, they can run at 20
kilometers an hour. The dromedary, or Arabian camel has one hump. The Bactrian, or Asian
camel, has longer hair and has got two humps. There are about 14 million camels in the world,
and most of them are dromedaries.
An adult camel is about 2.1 meters tall and weighs about 500 kilos. Camels can walk for more
than 600 kilometers without drinking. They only need to drink water every six or eight days. But
when there is water, they can drink up to 90 liters.

The three great pyramids of Giza stand on a rocky plateau of the desert a few miles
southwest of Cairo. They were built by the 4th-dynasty pharaohs Khufu (Cheops), Khafre
(Khefren of Chefren) and Menkure (Mycerinus), and came to be numbered among the Seven
Wonders of the Ancient World.
Khufu The largest and oldest of them is that of Khufu, now known as the Great Pyramid
and called Horizon of Khufu by the ancient Egyptians. Perhaps the greatest single building
ever erected by man, the great Pyramids almost perfectly squarely base was, when intact,
230 m. long, thus covering an area of slightly over 13 ac.; ... The original height was 146.59
m., reduced now to 137m. ... The core is made of yellowish limestone blocks from the
nearby Jabal al Moquattam; the outer casing (now mostly gone) and the inner passage are of
finer limestone from Jabal Taura, while the burial chamber is built of huge blocks of granite
from Aswan. Approximately 2,300,000 blocks of stone went into this stupendous structure,
each weighing an average of 2.5 tons.
The monument is a masterpiece of technical skill and engineering ability. The geometrical
precision of its layout and the accuracy of the stonecutting are truly amazing, particularly
when one considers the colossal proportions of the whole and the size and weight of the

blocks employed in it. ... The question of how the pyramid was built has not received a
wholly satisfactory answer. The most probable answer is that the Egyptians, who lacked
tackle and pulleys for lifting heavy weights, employed a sloping embankment of brick and
earth, which was increased in height and length as the pyramid rose, and on which the stone
25 blocks were carried by means of sledges, rollers and levers. According to Herodotus the road
for the conveyance of building material from the river to the plateau on which the pyramid
stands took 10 years to construct, while the pyramid itself took another 20 years and
demanded the labor of 100,000 men...
