Farm Bill Program Deadline Extended to April 7

Farmers have until April 7 to decide between the Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss
Coverage (PLC) safety net programs, USDA
announced Friday.
This weeks ag report is
The decision comes just days after Secretary of sponsored by:
Agriculture Tom Vilsack suggested an extension
remained a possibility.
1135 STATE RT. 29
"This is an important decision for producers because these programs help farmers and ranchGREENWICH, NEW YORK, 12834
ers protect their operations from unexpected
(518) 692-9611 FAX - (518) 692-2210
changes in the marketplace," Vilsack stated in a
news release. "Nearly 98% of owners have already updated their yield and base acres, and
90% of producers have enrolled in ARC or PLC. These numbers are strong, and continue to rise.
This additional week will give producers a little more time to have those final conversations, review
their data, visit their local Farm Service Agency offices, and make their decisions."
The deadline originally had been scheduled for March 31.
Farmers may also finish updating yield history and reallocating base acres by April 7.

needed to run this program. Due to their generosity, there will be no
participation fee. The CCC has a beautiful puppet theater constructed
by Board member, Rob Sellar, for last years program. Debi owns
many of the puppets representing many different performances,

WALLPAPER ONE WALL AND SAVE!

Fine wallpaper is more affordable if you only paper one wall.
If you havent visited a wall-covering retailer lately, youre missing a treat. With the revived
popularity of wallpaper, stores are offering an expanded range of choices. The prices of some of
these may knock your socks off too.
But take heart. You dont have to cover every wall to make a dramatic change. Papering only a
single wall will do, and thatll make some of those fine, expensive papers or fabrics affordable. Itll
also lessen the time, effort and mess of papering an entire room. This is an especially good solution
for a room with plain walls, slim baseboards and window trim, and no built-ins. You create instant
character.
Begin by taking a photo of your existing room and measuring its dimensions. Take these with you to
the interior design or wall-covering store, like Midway Decorating in Hudson Falls, and ask gina to
help sort through options thatll work well with your existing furnishings. She will also help you pick
the best wall for the new paper and estimate the amount to order.
Some papers can be hard to hang, especially fabrics, rolls with uncut edges and other designer
papers. Always check the hanging instructions and ask the dealer about the difficulty level. If youre
a novice paperhanger or fall in love with a super-expensive paper, consider hiring a pro. The extra
cost should be modest for a single wall.
Be sure to fill holes and smooth your wall before beginning. Rough spots might show through the
paper. Then seal the wall surface with an acrylic primer. It dries hard and smooth. This allows you
to slide the paper a bit more easily to tighten seams.

Cozy up to energy savings with insulation

(BPT) - With temperatures dropping, odds are your energy bills
will be doing just the opposite. In fact, heating (and cooling) account
for approximately 54 percent of the energy use in a typical U.S.
home, according to the Department of Energy, representing the
largest energy expense for most homeowners. One of the most
effective ways to manage a homes climate, comfort and energy
costs is by ensuring that it is properly insulated.
Insufficient insulation, particularly in basements and attics, can
allow heat to escape, resulting in higher energy bills and a less
comfortable indoor environment, says Don Kosanka, product
program director for Owens Corning. The great thing about
insulation is that it is an investment that returns itself. Its something
that homeowners can install themselves and it provides year-round
benefits. Not only does insulation keep homes warmer in winter
and cooler in summer, it delivers energy and cost savings all year
long.
In fact, sealing and insulating - when done by a knowledgeable
homeowner or skilled contractor - can help save up to $200 a
year in heating and cooling costs, according to the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In addition to cost
savings, the experts at Owens Corning outline three other key
benefits of insulating your home:
Energy efficiency - The primary purpose of insulation is to control
heat flow in a home to save energy on heating and cooling. Its
estimated that homeowners can typically save up to 20 percent
of heating and cooling costs by air sealing the home and adding
insulation. For optimal energy efficiency, a home should be
insulated from the roof down to its foundation. Information about
specific areas to insulate in a home is available at www.energy.gov
and www.owenscorning.com.
Environmental impact - The energy saved by insulating a home
also benefits the environment, but it is important to note that not
all insulation products have equal environmental impacts. Look
for products made from recycled materials, such as Owens
Cornings EcoTouch(R) PINK(R) Fiberglas(TM) Insulation with
PureFiber(R) Technology.
Enjoyment - Simply put, a well-insulated home is a more
comfortable home. Insulation provides a protective barrier
between the conditioned areas of a home and the outside elements
helping to control moisture and temperature. Additionally, fiberglass
insulation acts as a sound absorber, reducing the transmission of
sound from one room to another or from the outside.
An added incentive for homeowners to improve their homes
insulation this year is the 2013 Federal Tax Credit for Consumer
Energy Efficiency. Those who install qualifying insulation products
before Dec. 31, can receive a tax credit of 10 percent of the cost,
up to $500.
For more information on projects, visit www.owenscorning.com.
The site also provides access to a list of insulation products that
qualify for the 2013 Federal Tax Credit along with the certification
statement form.

THE SCHUYLERVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY HAS INHERITED THE 1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN program from the Schuylerville Elementary School! Combining the previous efforts of Schuylerville Elementary School and adding our own
twist to the program, we will scoop up some books as we read 1,000
books before kindergarten.
The 1000 Books before Kindergarten is a pre-literacy effort aimed at
encouraging families to read at least 1000 books to their preschooler,
birth to age five, before they enter school. This program was developed to increase awareness of the importance of early literacy as well
as encouraging parents to embrace their role as their childs first teacher.
The goal of this program is to foster a love of reading that will last a life
time and to help children enter school ready to learn. Reading is one of
the most important things you can do to ensure your childs success
when they begin school. It also provides an opportunity to increase
their exposure to a wide variety of books, and to promote use of the
library a treasure trove of free material available to our community
members.
At Schuylerville we are taking it a step further, while the program is
targeted to children under the age of five, the joy of reading doesnt
stop there. We are introducing a family element; families can enter as
one unit and work together to read 1,000 books. Register online or at
the Library, if you register online be sure to download our reading tracker.
For every 100 books you child or your family reads, bring the tracker
to the library and add a sprinkle to our ice cream tower!
About Schuylerville Public Library The Schuylerville Public Library is
in the Village of Schuylerville on 52 Ferry Street. In addition to a
variety of books and programs, it provides a website filled with digital
content and services. The Schuylerville Public Library is a school
district library, established in 2013 to serve sections of the Towns of
Easton, Fort Edward, Greenwich, Northumberland, Saratoga, Stillwater,
and Wilton along with the Villages of Schuylerville and Victory. In
2013, the Schuylerville Public Library was named a 3-star library by
the Library Journal magazine. Each year, the Schuylerville Public Library hosts hundreds of programs and serves thousands of people. All
of its programs and exhibitions are free and open to the public. Connect here for TLC! (Technology, Literacy, and Community). To learn
more, visit schuylervillelibrary.sals.edu/.

2 FREE SPRING ART PROGRAMS AT THE CCC. The Salem Courthouse Community Center is
offering two art programs to area students at no charge thanks to generous funding provided by LARAC.
The first opportunity is a spring break art class for students in the 7th and 8th grade. The Salem Central
School art department will help target the students who would benefit from this program, however,
private and home-schooled students are welcome as well. Experienced art teacher, Gabi Moore will
conduct the classes at the CCC Monday through Friday during spring break (April 6 10) from 10:30
am to noon. Students will have the opportunity to explore their creative side leading to an exhibit of their
work at the CCC. The second program funded is an initiative that involves both Salem Central School
teens and Salem Art Works. Each Monday at 2:30 pm between April 13 and June 1, students will be
transported from the school to SAW utilizing the SAVE van. At SAW, the students will be mentored by
graphic artist, Chase Winkler. The students will have the opportunity to work with established artists
while taking advantage of the outstanding grounds at SAW. Again, due to the generosity of LARAC,
there will be no tuition fee. Students interested in either program should contact the CCC at 518-8547053 to register.
