held on 26 & 27 April 2015. This competition is
organised by Jamilus Research Center (JRC), Universiti
Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia and co-organised by
Concrete Society of Malaysia (CSM). The objectives of
the competition are to develop creative work in
designing and building of concrete structures and to
promote a culture of sustainability by using waste
materials. The competition is open to all members of
higher learning institutions and other agencies.

RULES AND REGULATION

learning institutions, and industries.
The participants can be from the industry
researchers, academic staffs and students.

Category 1 is open to student from any higher
learning institution (university, polytechnic and
college).
Category 2 is open to industry researcher and
academic staff.
A team may consist up to maximum of FOUR (4)
participants.
There is no limit for the number of team coming
from the same institution or industry.
Registered participants are the only persons
eligible to present and to answer any questions
during the presentation.

CONCRETE PONTOON
Concrete pontoon is a floating concrete structure made
from concrete materials. Pontoons are used in marine
engineering and construction such as shipbuilding,
marine salvage, dredging and at the port facilities. In
one applications, pontoons are sunk, positioned under
objects that need to be raised (such as sunken ships
being recovered for their scrap metal or to clear
channels), and then pumped full of air with air
compressors, raising the object. Pontoons are also used
to build things like pontoon bridges and floating piers.

REQUIREMENTS
Concrete pontoon:
(i) Dimension
Size: 500 mm x 500 mm x 100 mm (length x
width x thickness).
(ii) Material
The pontoon must consist at least 50% of
concrete of the total volume.
Sustainable materials are encouraged to be used
in the pontoon.
Expanded polyethylene and polystyrene are not
allowed as the infill material in the pontoon.
(iii) Concrete specimen and specification
The concrete must achieve minimum compressive
strength of 2.5 MPa.
The surface of the pontoon must be concrete.
The appearance of the pontoon must remain
original. Coating and finishing are not allowed.
Each team has to bring ONE (1) pontoon and TWO
(2) 150 mm concrete cubes. The concrete cubes
are the concrete used in the pontoon.
Testing:
The 150 mm cubes will be used to evaluate the
concrete strength.
The pontoon will be forced to fully submerge in
the water for 5 minutes before a minimum load
of 5 kg will be applied on the top surface of the
pontoon. Incremental load will be imposed every
5 minutes until the pontoon submerges in the
water. The maximum load before the pontoon
submerges in the water will be recorded.
Poster:
Each team has to display an A1 size poster during
the competition. The information such as the
team members, materials used in the pontoon,
concrete mixture and preparation of the pontoon
should be included in the poster.
An evaluation of the poster will be carried out as
part of the assessment.
