Subject: [btech_it_2010] Placement Interview(HP): Amol Joshi.

Interviewer: So Amol Joshi. How was the apti? Which section was toughest for u?
Me: Apti was fine. But the first section questions were bit lengthy.
Interviewer: I see your C score to be little low.
Me: Yeah. There were few questions related to DEBUG ( Basically where all those words were written
in Block Letters :P. I did tell him this. ). I never heard of them before.
Interviewer: Ok. We at HP have our own OS. HPUnix. (Explained a bit about it and was expecting me
to know Unix.) So?
Me: I have no clue about Unix.
Interviewer: Ok then he told me to explain compiler.
Me: I started directly from Preprocessor phase and explained linker, loader....
Interviewer: that was correct, good! But i did n`t understand the linking phase and what exactly it is.
Me: I wrote one program containing extern variable. ( I made two mistakes in the syntax because quite
frankly i was not able to recollect the syntax ) and explained him linking. Then corrected the program
following his clues.
Interviewer: Then he asked some sheet where he was supposed to write grades to some1 out there. Said
sorry for distracting me. (LOL , I did get distracted though and lost the last question that I was
answering. I wonder what distracted me. may be his sorry. :P )
He continued to evaluate me and wrote few things on one sheet. Then looked at me and wrote one
program. Asked me to give the o/p. I gave 2 wrong answer as it was a simple for loop. Then when he
told me write my answer on a sheet, I understood my mistake and straight away corrected it.
He said Good, good!. ( He thought I was too dumb. :) )
Then he told me to make one character change to the program and turn the for loop to a finite loop.
Me: ( WTF! I did n`t expect this. ) I scribbled something and after few mins he told me to tell him the
what was i thinking. which I did and was definitely not an one character change that he was looking at.
Interviewer: Hmm, we`ll get back to this later. <He took my paper and saw my DS score. He drwn one 3
node singly link list. And the famous interview question which i did n`t know. One pointer to the middle
node and deleting the middle node.
Me: <Again I scribbled few thing and quite definitely I was very low in confidence after the for loop
question. :(. He told me to take my time and started to write something on his sheet. After sometime I

gave up.
Interviewer: Hmm, so amol why did you score so less in C section < Same question. I did n`t change my
last answer. > He asked about the linked list program again.
Me: Yes Sir, I`m good at DS. ( He nodded and replied that my score was better than most of the other
students. ) But told him that I`m not able to get this program. :(
Interviewer: <Then he gone ahead and asked me few basic DS questions which I answered straight
away. Then asked me give more efficient method for the latest programs that I wrote. I think, I did n`t
do much but He said the way that you think is good. I thought, Yeah he wants to wrap this Interview
now. >
So Amol, I think thats all I wanted to ask you.
Me: <I was disappointed. And told him directly that I`m good at OS too!>
Interviewer: < He looked at my score and was little puzzled by my reaction to his "Bye Bye Amol!". He
smiled. lol> Oh yes, OS is my favourite subject. < I kept telling myself "Bring It on!". Somewhat on the
same lines :P>
Interviewer: So really Amol what can u change in OS. What is the most important thing in OS.?
Me: I answered that. And I guess it was satisfactory. Then he asked me two questions.
Interviewer: Tell me how can you automate this room.
Me: I gave him a stupid answer that Firstly I`ll connect this room to Internet. and blah blah.
Interviewer: No, you are talking about a different thing. I asked you how would you automate this room
meaning how will automate this chair, this table.
Me: I gave him few answers. most of them quite funny ( I guess I was exhausted. )
Interviewer: I give you 20 crores. What can you do with them?
Me: < Damn you just take me and I can be happy with 4 lakhs too :). But guess, he was bit serious. So I
answered few things. >
He said Quite Good. But whatever you told me was not worth 20 crores.
I said yeah I know, but I can`t find anything else as a 20 crore project at this point. Again he looked
quite satisfied.
Interviewer: Hmm, tell me some projects or Idea that you want to do in ur OS.
Me: Answered!

< Back to OS Again! >

Interviewer: Good! Good! Hmm, tell me don`t you feel Synchronization is also a concern in OS.
Me: Yeah It is. When he asked me to explain how are you going to do that, I replied Semaphores blah
blah.
Interview: So can you explain me one example. < I told him Producer Consumer Problem.>
Interviewer: Good! < In producer consumer problem I did answer his "more efficient" solution too. >

< Damn, I thought I can answer your OS questions. So lets keep it going! >
But He said, Yes Amol, I think thats it from my side. You have any question?
Me: I asked him the solution of the linked list question. But he replied that he`ll not answer me here.
And sort of instructed me not to reveal the question outside. More of a warning.
-------- Out of the Room! Wow, when I came out I realised that it was very long interview and was really
exhausted. -------They called me for HR Interview after 30 mins. There were 2 of them. One who showed us the
presentation and one more. They greeted me and told me to sit down.

Interviewers: So Amol Joshi. < Kinda wassup? >

Me: I said I`m good.
Interviewers: Tell me about yourself, your family, your bros/sis.
Me: Answered.
Interviewers: Would you like to come to Bangalore.
Me: I said yes after a pause. ( Was shocked. ) But I do want to consult my family.
Interviewers: Ok, but why how old are u? 20? Can`t you make ur own decisions.
Me: Because they are my family. I do want to consult them. I know they won`t say No, but still I want to
consult them.
Interviewers: Do you want to consult or Convince?
Me: Consult.
Interviewers: So tell me Amol what ambitions/aspiratio ns you have.
Me: Answered.
Interviewers: Hmm, okay. what do you like in C?
Me: Answered.
Interviewers: Okay. <Asked some OS related aspirations that I have>
Me: Answered every questions they had.
Interviewers: < looked at each other > Ok thats what we wanted to ask.
< HR was longer than what I have written here. Getting bored now.>
Result of All this? Rejection.
