the plan to raise achievement for

all students, continue development of curriculum according to
adopted standards, continue business efficiency and continue the
learning, teaching and assessment process through Achieve
NJ, according to district officials.
According to business administrator Marie Goodwin, all existing programs will remain in the
2015-2016 budget.
The district will be completing $2 million of capital projects
over the summer months. This
was funded through School Development Authority Grants and a
lease purchase agreement budgeted in the 2015-2016 budget, Goodwin said.
A new reading program called
Journeys is budgeted for the
third and fourth grade. The Journeys program is a core reading
program designed to meet the diverse needs of all students, from
kindergarten through grade six.
It includes the key elements of

reading instruction, from comprehension to decodable readers.

Journeys was piloted this
school year in the fifth grade and
is used by many neighboring districts. The Journeys program
is aligned to the Common Core
Standards and provides centralized resources.
In other news:
All current teaching positions
are also budgeted for in 2015-2016.
No new positions will be added
next year.
There were contractual salary
increases, health-care cost increased, and increases were budgeted for gas and electric.
There are five capital projects
targeted for completion over the
summer. At IMMS, the district
will be replacing exterior doors
and security upgrades. At IMS, it
will be replacing windows in the
second-grade wing, as well as
doing security upgrades and putting air conditioning in the instructional areas. These capital
projects are being funded through
the 2015-2016 budget as well as
grant money from the School Development Authority, Goodwin
said.

Bankrate.com didnt exactly find
that youd be out of your mind to retire in New Jersey, but it did rank the
Garden State near the bottom of the
list of desirable places to spend the latter portion of your life.
This should not be a shock.
The survey ranks New Jersey 45th
on the list of best places to retire,
based on the fact that the cost of living
is high (45th), the community well

very high (49th). These factors out-

weight the low crime rate (eighth) and

the above-average weather and healthcare quality.
Theres a reason why so many New
Jerseyans retire elsewhere its
cheaper. And cheaper is better, because most people would rather see
their hard-earned money go toward
vacations than taxes, for example.

Many retirees go to Florida not just for

the weather but for the absence of a
state income tax.
Maybe if New Jersey was more affordable, more elderly residents would
stay at home, near their friends and
family. But since its not, many dont.
We are probably not the only ones
who laughed when we pondered where
in New Jersey other than, say, a
beach town such as Ocean City
would be a good place to retire. And
thats a shame, and a problem all at the
same time.
Our residents shouldnt have to prepare to leave when they retire.

Seussational day kicks off Read Across America

Indian Mills Elementary School treated to visit by NJEAs Cat in the Hat
The National Education Association is
building a nation of readers through
its signature program, Read Across America.
Now in its 18th year, this year-round program focuses on motivating children and
teens to read through events, partnerships
and reading resources. NEA's national
reading celebration takes place each year
on March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
Across the country, thousands of schools,
libraries and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens and
books.
Indian Mills Elementary School's kickoff Read Across America assembly was a
truly Seussational day! Last November,
while attending the New Jersey Education
Association's annual convention, Sherry
DuBoff, a K-4 Response to Intervention
teacher, entered a contest to win a Cat in
the Hat visit.
In January, she was notified that Indian
Mills Elementary School won the contest,
with the visit scheduled for Feb. 23.
NJEA's Cat in the Hat is portrayed by
a retired teacher who dons a professional

costume.
Once put on, the Cat stands over seven
feet tall. That is quite an imposing figure
for elementary school students and teachers alike.
The Cat exploded into the assembly;
danced and high-fived the students during
a sing-along; followed by a school-wide
chant of the Reader's Oath.
In the end, the Cat presented Indian
Mills Elementary School with its own autographed copy of Horton Hears a Who for
the school library. And, as the good doctor
always said, You can find magic wherever
you look. Six back and relax, all you need is
a good book."
After the Cat left, the Indian Mills Memorial School's Drama Club, comprised of
students from grades five through eight,
presented Dr. Seuss skits and visited the
classrooms to read to the students. The
week-long celebration included theme
dress-up days, poster and trivia contests,
and even green eggs and ham in the cafeteria on Dr. Seuss's birthday. It was truly a
Seussational week at Indian Mills Elementary School.

Nominees sought for Lloyd Ritter

Community Service Award
The Volunteer Center of
Burlington County has announced it is seeking nominees
for its prestigious Lloyd Ritter
Community Service Award and is
encouraging members of the public to submit names of individuals who deserve to be honored because of their outstanding
records of community service
and volunteerism.
Volunteer Center President
Kimberly Mattson said this is the
first time that the public has been
actively asked to participate in
the nomination process. But
thats not all unlike past years,
the Volunteer Center also is looking to honor as many as three
Burlington County residents at
its annual awards dinner in the
fall.
We are extremely proud of
our 16 past recipients, each of
whom was honored at our annual

awards dinner, Mattson said.

However, we also realize there
are many unsung, low-profile
community activists who need to
be publicly recognized, applauded, and formally thanked, for
their distinguished volunteer
service.
That said, we are asking county residents to bring to our attention their neighbors, coworkers
and acquaintances they deem
worthy of the Community Service Award, and take the time to
provide us with some background information, Mattson
said.
The nomination form can be
easily accessed at the Volunteer
Centers website at www.volunteercenterburlingtoncounty.org.
The form can be filled out and
submitted electronically, or printed and mailed to the Volunteer
