What is Mechanics of Solids?

A branch of applied mechanics that deals with the behaviour of solid
bodies subjected to various types of loading
We dont want this to happen.

Why Mechanics of Solids?

Statics, Maths,
Physics

Mechanics
of Solids
Structural Analysis,
Geotechnical Engineering
Water Engineering

Design of Structures

Course Objectives
Continue the concepts of engineering mechanics so that students gain
an understanding of the structural behaviour of materials.
Students should be able to calculate the stresses and deformations of
simple structures such as columns and beams.
If we can find these quantities for all values of the loads up to the loads
that cause failure, we will have a complete picture of the mechanical
behaviour of these structures

Assessment
The final grade will be based on the sum of the scores from each of the
assessment task.
The final examination in June is worth 60% of the Final Mark.

The class work ( 1 major quiz 20% (week &)+ Tutorial Hand-Ins 20%) &
Final Examination 60%
A mark of at least 40% in the final examination is required before
the class work is included in the final mark.
