The Long Branch boardwalk is to be rebuilt on the now-bare beachfront. Work is expected to start in June and take 18 months.

Jersey coast is about to be rebuilt.
You just go up the line and theyre all done
until you get to Long Branch, said Robert Hilton, the executive director of the Jersey Shore
Convention and Visitors Bureau. But theyve had their
own set of circumstances.
But 212 years after superstorm Sandy, those circumstances are about to change. The much-anticipated
boardwalk reconstruction the largest public works
project Long Branch has ever undertaken is finally
set to begin in June.
Its $24 million cost has pushed the citys debt over
the $100 million mark, although city officials are hopeful the bulk of the cost will be picked up by the Federal
Emergency Management Agency.
But ever since Sandy struck on Oct. 29, 2012, Adam
Schneider, the citys longtime mayor, has had to answer
the boardwalk question. While other beach towns
rushed to throw their boards back up, Long Branchs
scenic bluffs remained bare.
There was nowhere in the city Schneider could go
without hearing it. People approached him at city council meetings or when he went to get his shirts at the
cleaners.
When is the boardwalk coming back? Thats what
they all want to know, said Schneider.
Residents have expressed everything from frustration to patience with the council and the speed of the
government.
Were just used to having the boardwalk, and we

The boardwalk near Pier Village in Long Branch is the model

for the citys project to reconstruct the sections of boardwalk
it lost to superstorm Sandy in October 2012.

which was called into question after Ferguson, Missouri, police brandished such hardware against local residents now will need formal approval from their civilian bosses.
What they wont need is the OK of the states attorney general.
Gov. Chris Christie last week signed into law a bill,
which took effect immediately, requiring county or
municipal governing bodies to adopt resolutions before
local or county law-enforcement agencies can apply for
free surplus equipment from the U.S. Department of
Defense.
