Carnuntum –
Rome’s Danube metropolis
It was 2,000 years ago, in A.D. 6, that the most important metropolis of
the Roman Empire was born. Tiberius, later to become emperor, erected
a fortified winter camp in the Carnuntum area. In the following centuries
Carnuntum, as the capital of the Roman province of Upper Pannonia, reg-
ularly played an important role in world politics.
Bit by bit, Roman structures are being rebuilt on the original sites. In this
way, Carnuntum is becoming a one-of-a-kind centre for fabulous jour-

into the field of archaeology.
Easily accessible from both Vienna and Bratislava, the Archaeological
