CURRENT AFFAIRS : APRIL 2014

1. The Reserve Bank of India on 1 April 2014 adopted the Consumer


Price Index (CPI) as the key measure of Inflation. It was adopted in the
first bi-monthly monetary policy statement for 2014-15 on the basis of
recommendations of Urjit R Patel Committee report.
2.The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 2 April 2014 granted in-principle
approvals to IDFC Ltd and Bandhan Financial Services Pvt. Ltd to start
new banks in India. The approvals would be valid for a period of 18
months.
3.Union Ministry of Civil Aviation on 2 April 2014 approved the Tata and
Singapore Airlines (SIA) joint venture. The Aviation Ministry also issued
no-objection certificate (NOC) to the new airline JV called Tata SIA
Airlines Ltd.
4.Noel Naval Tata on 31 March 2014 appointed as the chairman of
retail arm Trent.
5.Ratan Tata on 10 April 2014 received the Knight Grand Cross
(GBE)award by UK Government. GBE is one of the highest civilian
honour of Britain. The award was given by Queen Elizabeth II.
6.The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced on 12
April 2014 that poet and film lyricist Gulzar was selected for
the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2013.
7.Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the Nobel laureate in literature died at the age
of 87 in Mexico on 17 April 2014. He was born in Colombia in 1927 and
received the Nobel Prize in 1982 for literature.
8.Admiral Robin K Dhowan on 17 April 2014 took over as the 22nd Chief
of Indian Navy. At the time of being appointed as the chief of Navy, he
was serving the Indian Navy as its acting Naval Chief.
9.The 61st National Film Awards for 2013 was announced in New Delhi
on 16 April 2014 by the Directorate of Film Festivals. Ship of
Theseus directed by Anand Gandhi was selected as the Best feature film.
10.Union Cabinet on 16 April 2014 approved the appointment
of Narendra Kothari as full time Chairman of the state-run miner National
Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC).
11.Randstad Awards 2014 was announced on 17 April 2014 to
encourage best practices for talent attraction and to identify the best
Employer Brand in the country based on perceived attractiveness of a
company.
12.The High Court of Gujarat on 2 April 2014 restored the power of the
Reserve Bank of India to decide the period after which the bad loan can

be called as a non-performing asset (NPA).


13.India on 27 April 2014 test-fired an exo-atmospheric interceptor
missile, called Prithvi Defence Vehicle with capability to neutralise any
long-range missile at higher altitude.
14.Time Magazine released the 100 most influential people in the world
list on 24 April 2014. The annual list includes US President Barack
Obama, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Grammy-winning artist Beyonce,
US Secretary of State John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, Pope Francis, Russian
President Vladimir Putin, whistleblower Edward Snowden, Japanese
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Pakistani girls educational activist Malala
Yousafzai among others.
15.Publisher Simon & Shuster on 19 April 2014 announced that they will
release a book named Hard Choices authored by Hillary Rodham
Clinton, the former first lady and New York senator on 10 June 2014.
16.Microsoft, the US software giant on 25 April 2014 completed
acquisition of Nokias mobile handset business, excluding the Nokias
Chennai factory from the over 7.2 billion US dollar deal due to tax issues.
17.Cadbury India Limited on 22 April 2014 announced to change its
name to Mondelez India Foods Limited. Cadbury India Limited is a
subsidiary of Mondelez International Inc.
