Composition of the class: 23 students aged 11-12
General description of the class: The 5th form students are intelligent and eager to learn but
they lack solid English knowledge and therefore they are reluctant to engage in conversation or
in class activities. However, they may be stimulated if the topic is appealing to them and they
need to be encouraged that something interesting is going to happen.
Lesson Aims:

To review the vocabulary related to weather (nouns and adjectives)


To review Present Continuous Tense
To introduce new vocabulary: verbs related to weather
To integrate Present Continuous Tense in describing weather
To get the students express their thoughts and exchange personal opinions
To enable students write a short description of a picture based on the revised and taught
vocabulary
To boost students confidence in their abilities

Lesson Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, the students

will be able to use the new words in sentences of their own


will be able to use English in order to express their thoughts and feelings concerning a
certain subject
will be better at working in groups in order to create a short piece of writing

Language functions:

expressing likes and dislikes about weather


speaking about weather

Anticipated problems; If there are any (e.g. unknown words, difficulty in understanding, etc.),

LESSON STAGES
ACTIVITY 1: WARM UP

AIM: to get students ready for the English class by having an informal conversation
(greetings, teachers ice-breaking, How are you?)
TIMING: 2 minutes
TYPE OF INTERACTION: T S, S T
PROCEDURE: Teacher greets Students, asks them how they are. Pupils respond to
informal question. Teacher tells a joke to break the ice.

ACTIVITY 2: HOMEWORK CHECK-UP

AIM: to check whether the students have accomplished their task.


TIMING: 5 minutes
TYPE OF INTERACTION: T S, S T
PROCEDURE: Teacher asks Have you done your homework?, Was it difficult?, Who
wants to read? and then names a few students to read their homework and asks the
others to check and correct if necessary. Students respond individually. Teacher involves
all the class. Homework is checked.

ACTIVITY 3: TRANSITION TO THE NEW LESSON

AIM: to make connection between what the students previously know about weather and
the new vocabulary.
TIMING: 5 minutes
TYPE OF INTERACTION: T S, S T
PROCEDURE: Teacher draw a table on the blackboard with two columns: nouns and
adjectives
TASKS: Ss have to fill in the table with words related to weather (e.g. rain rainy)
ACTIVITY 4: PRESENTATION (NEW LESSON PROPER)
AIM: to make students use the new vocabulary
TIMIMG: 10 minutes

PROCEDURE: Teacher announces the new topic: verbs related to weather
STEP 1: LEAD-IN/ELICITATION

Teacher shows students a few pictures representing different types of weather and asks Ss
What is the weather like in this picture?

The students will answer using adjectives. Teacher will give the alternative answer by
using a verb in the Present Continuous. (e.g. Ss: It is rainy. T: It is raining)
STEP 2: EXPLANATION
Teacher tells the students that these verbs give a more complete description of the
weather and writes them on the blackboard
STEP 3: ACCURATE REPRODUCTION
Students are asked to solve exercise 1 from the worksheet.
ACTIVITY 5: PRACTISING NEW LANGUAGE

STAGE 1:
AIMS: to make students write a short paragraph about the weather
TIMING: 15 minutes
TYPE OF INTERACTION: S S, S T, T - S
PROCEDURE: Teacher groups students in groups of four, and then explains that
each group have to write a very short paragraph describing the weather in the
picture on their worksheets. Teacher goes from group to group, monitoring
actively or participate, as the case may be.
STAGE 2: FEEDBACK
AIM: to see if students wrote the correct sentences
TIMING: 5 minutes

PROCEDURE: Teacher asks the representative of one group to write the correct
sentences on the board.

AIM: to evaluate students work


TIMING: 6 minutes

PROCEDURE: Students are asked to solve exercise 3 from the worksheet.

ACTIVITY 7: HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

AIM: to assign students homework


TIMING: 2 minutes

PROCEDURE: For the next time students have to write exercise 4 from their worksheet
where they have to complete the chart with information from the text, and to write five

questions regarding the text, which will be answered the following time by their
colleagues.
ACTIVITY 8: DISMISS CLASS
Teacher says goodbye to the students and thanks them for their attention.
