Letter of Appreciation
The world has witnessed the white revolution in India which was started from Gujarat, the birth place of Mahatma
Gandhi. When we talk of white revolution, we cant forget a living Legend and architect of white Revolution
Dr. Verghese Kurien.
It gives me a great pleasure to mention that a number of senior Nepalese Dairy Technologists, at present working in
Nepal, had their education from Dairy Science College, Gujarat Agricultural University, Anand.
One month training program organized as a special consideration, to CAFODAT students is highly appreciated by
the college management committee. We thank Vidya Dairy, AAU Campus Anand, for the cooperation extended

saving, operation procedures, problem solving, trouble
shooting, schedule maintenance, communication skills,
accounting and book-keeping practices, customer

Annual
Financial Statements
2012-13
An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures
selected depend on the auditors judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether
due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal controls relevant to the Companys preparation and fair
presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances. An audit also includes
evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of the accounting estimates made by management, as well
as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements.
We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.
Opinion
In our opinion and to the best of our information and according to the explanations given to us, the financial statements give the information
required by the Act in the manner so required and give a true and fair view in conformity with the accounting principles generally accepted in
India:
(a) In the case of the Balance Sheet, of the state of affairs of the Company as at March 31, 2013;
(b) In the case of Statement of Income and Expenditure, of the surplus for the year ended on that date; and
(c) In the case of the Cash Flow Statement, of the cash flows for the year ended on that date.
Report on Other Legal and Regulatory Requirements
1. Since the Company is licensed to operate under section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956, the matters as required by the Companies (Auditors
Report) Order, 2003 (the Order) issued by the Central Government of India in terms of sub-section (4A) of section 227 of the Act, 1956
are not applicable.
2. As required by section 227(3) of the Act, we report that:
a. We have obtained all the information and explanations which to the best of our knowledge and belief were necessary for the purpose
of our audit;
b. In our opinion proper books of account as required by law have been kept by the Company so far as appears from our examination
of those books;
c. The Balance Sheet, Statement of Income and Expenditure and Cash Flow Statement dealt with by this Report are in agreement with
the books of account;
d. In our opinion, the Balance Sheet, Statement of Income and Expenditure and Cash Flow Statement comply with the Accounting
Standards referred to in subsection (3C) of section 211 of the Companies Act, 1956 subject to;
i. Without qualifying our opinion, we draw attention to Note No 26 on Prior Period depreciation on Grant, wherein the company has
reviewed the treatment of depreciation on assets acquired through Capital Grants and observed that there was some mathematical
error in adjusting the amount of depreciation of earlier year with the amount of respective Capital Grant As a result, depreciation
on capital assets of prior year, has been debited to respective Capital Grant by crediting the same to prior period items - Prior
Period depreciation on grant. Due to such treatment, surplus for the year has been increased by ` 7,65,297/-, with corresponding
decrease in respective Capital Grants balance.
e. On the basis of written representations received from the directors as on March 31, 2013, and taken on record by the Board of
Directors, none of the directors is disqualified as on March 31, 2013, from being appointed as a director in terms of clause (g) of
sub-section (1) of section 274 of the Companies Act, 1956.
f. Since the Central Government has not issued any notification as to the rate at which the cess is to be paid under section 441A of the
Companies Act, 1956 nor has it issued any Rules under the said section, prescribing the manner in which such cess is to be paid, no
cess is due and payable by the Company.

1.
The financial statements of the Company have been prepared in accordance with the Generally Accepted Accounting
Principles in India, to comply with the applicable mandatory Accounting Standards notified under the Companies (Accounting
Standards) Rules, 2006 (as amended) and the relevant provisions of the Companies Act, 1956. The accounting policies
adopted in the preparation of financial statements are consistent with those followed in the previous year, except wherever
specified.
USE OF ESTIMATES
The preparation of financial statements in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles requires that management
make estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities and disclosure of contingent
assets and liabilities on the date of the financial statements and the reported amounts of revenues and expenses during
the reporting period. Actual results could differ from those estimates.
FIXED ASSETS
Fixed assets are stated at cost (net of recoverable taxes) less accumulated depreciation and accumulated impairment
losses, if any.
Computer software costs are capitalized and recognized as intangible assets in terms of Accounting Standards - 26 on
intangible assets based on accounting prudence and significant economic benefits expected to flow there from for a period
longer than one year. Capitalized cost includes direct cost of implementation and expenses directly attributable to the
implementation.
The carrying amounts of Fixed Assets are reviewed at each Balance Sheet date to assess whether they are recorded in
excess of their recoverable amount which represents the greater of the net selling price of assets and their value in use
determined with reference to the estimated future cash flows from the respective assets, discounted to their present value
at the weighted average cost of capital.
Depreciation has been provided on the straight-line method at the rates and in the manner specified in Schedule XIV of
the Companies Act, 1956. Depreciation on grant portion of the assets is adjusted to the grant account.
Computer Softwares are amortized over a period of 3 years as estimated by the management.
Fixed assets costing ` 5,000/- or less are fully depreciated in the year of purchase.
Prior period and extraordinary items are accounted in accordance with Accounting Standard - 5. Transactions arising out
of errors or omissions which are considered as material are accounted under prior period transactions.
INVENTORIES
Inventories are valued at lower of cost or net realizable value. The basis of determining cost for various categories of
inventories is as follows:
1.
Raw materials
2.
Stock-in-process
at absorption cost
3.
Finished goods
at absorption cost
4.
Stock in trade
5.
REVENUE RECOGNITION
Revenue from sale of goods is recognized on transfer of significant risks and rewards of ownership in the goods to the
buyer which is generally at the time of dispatch to the customer. Sales are recorded net of returns (if any), trade discounts,
rebates, other pricing discounts to trade/consumer and value added tax/sales tax.
Revenue from educational services is recognized over the period of the course programme.
NOTES TO FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST MARCH, 2013
37
38
Foreign currency transactions are recorded in the reporting currency by applying to the foreign currency amount exchange
rate between the reporting currency and the foreign currency at the date of the transactions.
Foreign currency monetary items are reported using closing rate. Non monetary items which are carried in terms of
historical cost denominated in foreign currency are reported using the exchange rate at the date of transaction.
Exchange difference arising on the settlement of monetary items or/on reporting a companys monetary items at rates
different from those at which they were initially recorded during the year or reported in previous financial statements are
recognized as income or an expense in which they arise.
GRANTS
Grants are recognized when there is reasonable assurance that the grant will be received and all attaching conditions will
be complied with. In case of capital grant related to depreciable assets, the cost of the asset is shown at gross value and
the grant thereon is treated as capital grant which is disclosed under the head Reserves and Surplus. Amount equivalent
to depreciation provided on such assets is transferred from such Reserves to Income and Expenditure Account at the year
end.
RETIREMENT BENEFITS
i)
Short Term:
Short Term employee benefits are recognized as an expense at the undiscounted amount expected to be paid over
the period of services rendered by the employees to the company.
ii)
Long Term:
The Company has both defined contribution and defined benefit plans, of which some have assets in approved funds.
These plans are financed by the Company in the case of defined contribution plans.
iii) Defined Contributions Plans:
These are plans in which the Company pays pre-defined amount to separate funds and does not have any legal
or informal obligation to pay additional sums. These comprise of contributions to Employees Provident Fund and
Superannuation Fund. The Companys payments to the defined contribution plans are reported as expenses during
the period in which the employee performs the services that the payment covers.
iv) Defined Benefit Plans:
Expenses for defined benefit gratuity plans are calculated as at the balance sheet date by independent actuary in
the manner that distributes expenses over the employees working life. These commitments are valued at the present
value of the expected future payments, with consideration for calculated future salary increases, using a discounted
rate corresponding to the interest rate estimated by the actuary having regard to the interest rate on Government
Bonds with a remaining term i.e. almost equivalent to the average balance working period of employees.
v)
BORROWING COST
Borrowing costs are recognized in the period to which they relate, regardless of how the funds have been utilized, except
where it relates to the financing of construction or development of assets requiring a substantial period of time to prepare
for their intended future use. Interest on borrowings if any is capitalized up to the date when the asset is ready for intended
use. The amount of interest capitalized for the period is determined by applying the interest rate applicable to appropriate
borrowings.
A provision is recognized when the Company has a present legal or constructive obligation as a result of past event and
it is probable that an outflow of resources will be required to settle the obligation, in respect of which reliable estimate can
be made. Provisions (excluding long term benefits) are not discounted to its present value and are determined based on
best estimate required to settle the obligation at the balance sheet date. These are reviewed at each balance sheet date
and adjusted to reflect the current best estimates. Contingent liabilities are not recognized but are disclosed in the notes
to Financial Statements. A contingent asset is neither recognized nor disclosed.

Much can be learned by our U.S. dairy industry as well as our academic institutions by what I have seen here.
It is a superb initiative, which deserves to be introduced in other professional courses, very impressive. Thank
you.
BIMAL JALAN, Governor, RBI

work.
I am very impressed and inspired to see students leading the industry. Congratulations on a job so very well
done.
KAREN L. HULEBAK, CODEX Chair person, US Dept of Agriulture, Washington DC, USA.
It is a unique experiment, which needs to be replicated. I am delighted to visit the Vidya Dairy and wish all
the success in its endeavors.
PRADEEP KUMAR, Secretary, Animal Husbandary, Dairy and Fisheries, Govt. of India.
It is most satisfying to see the students getting practical orientation in both running and management of a dairy
plant. Excellent facilities developed through the advice of NDDB would enable GAU to generate well trained
human resource in the field of Dairy Technology. We need to develop similar models in different parts of our
country. My best wishes to the staff and students in this endeavour.
Excellent way to train students in the commercial realities of running a dairy plant. Chr-Hansen is pleased to
be able to help with aspects of the training programmes.
Stephen Bullin RITM Chr Hansen A/S Malaysia
A wonderful, innovation initiative to create the next generation of dairy professionals through practical hands
on experience ! Thank you for sharing!.
Sandip Patel, GM, Global Business Services, IBM India Pvt. Ltd, Bangalore.
Visiting this Daiy is a most exciting and exhilarating experience. Pride in performance, unrelenting emphasis
on quality control and the breeding of outstanding Dairy Managers, are all important features of this unique
Training Dairy. I consider the Vidya Dairy of GAU an outstanding example of the capability and commitment
of Indias Dairy Scientist and Technologists. I wish this Dairy continued success in remaining the flagship of
dairying for Rural Livelihood and Nutrition Security Involvement..
Dr. MS Swaminathan, UNESCO Chair in Ecotechnology, MSSRF, Chennai
This institution is a pioneer of the country. I wish other part of the country can bless.
An extremely interesting concept of Dr. Kurien which appears to be doing very well. Its an idea worth
replicating many times over.
