Welcome to 2014
Welcome to Further Mathematics, Units 3 and 4. This ignition package is
designed to outline the course for 2014. This guide will include content
covered in this subject and illustrate the recommended material and work
expected to be completed prior to 2014 beginning. We hope this ignition
package is useful, a more detailed course outline will be posted on Student
Sharepoint before the end of this year. We are looking forward to teaching
you and we hope you enjoy this subject.

Holiday Homework
You are required to complete the following homework in preparation for the
commencement of classes next year. There is approximately four hours of
work here and it is based on revision and AOS 1. All students will have the
same expectation in each Unit 3 subject they are undertaking in 2014.
Student feedback from past years has recognised that completing holiday
homework is a key factor in having a smooth commencement to Year 12.

Key skills you will require to be successful in this subject
Uni-variate and Bi-variate Data

Be able to use statistical techniques and terms to display, summarise,

describe and interpret patterns in both univariate and bivariate data,
Using the technique of linear regression, to model a relationship between
two numerical variables, linearising the data when necessary, and be able
to test the suitability of this model, make future predictions and interpret
its parameters.
Display a time series graphically (smoothing when necessary), and use this
to identify and describe any possible trend patterns and predict future
values.

Trigonometry

Use trigonometric relationships, Pythagoras theorem, scale and similarity

to solve problems in two and three dimensions, and be able to apply
geometry and trigonometry in circumstances related to orienteering,
navigation and surveying.

Graphs and Relations

Use graphs and tables of linear and non-linear relations to interpret

information and be able to identify key properties, determine the nature of
a relationship, and the corresponding constant of proportionality.
Set up, solve and interpret equations in a given context and use linear
programming and graphical techniques to solve optimisation problems.

Matrices

Represent data from situations using scalars, vectors (as row matrices or
column matrices) and use technology to calculate scalar multiples, sums
and differences, products and inverses of matrices to simplify or solve.
Model situations using transitions matrices, and identify and/or calculate
initial, transition and steady state.

MY HOLIDAY HOMEWORK PLAN

Date

Each student is to complete their individual plan during or at the end of

Ignition Week
You are required to complete 4 hours holiday homework before your first
lesson in 2014

Subject/Topic

Hours

Where do we begin in 2014?

In your first lesson of 2014, the class will continue from the work taught and
completed in Ignition Week 2013 along with the holiday homework.
It is important for you to understand that the course will not be
recommenced in the first lesson of 2014.
For you to have the best possible start to your Year 12, you must attend the
Ignition Week from Monday November 25, 2013 to Friday November 29,
2013 and complete your holiday homework obligations 4 hours per subject.
Finally, pay attention to the quality of your work and ensure you organise it
into folders.
