1. HOW TO USE THIS M ANUAL

1.1 INTRODUCTION
It is recommended that you read this manual prior to installing and using the TMA. This manual gives you a
complete guide for how to mount, operate the product, the installation engineers of Operator and other
personnel concerned.

1.3 PRIOR TO INSTALLATION

A thorough study of the site conditions and transmission path requirements should be undertaken prior to
installing the repeater system. The location of antennas, repeater and cable lengths are all important
considerations that must be addressed.

The repeater has been designed for simple easy installation requiring no special tools. With just a few site
preparation tasks out of the way, installation can be accomplished in several hours.

2. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION / OPERATION

2.1 INTRODUCTION
This chapter provides an overall description and operation of the repeater system. This system may be used to
address Network Coverage Enhancements such as those required by Cellular Network Operators.

Tower Mounted Amplifier System TMA is used to amplify uplink signal and improve the uplink sensitivity of
BTS. The TMA system is made up of three main components:

TMA: A Low Noise Amplifier(LNA), which is mounted close to the antenna, with bypass switch
Bias Tee: A device used to inject of DC current on the RF cable
PDC: A power distribution device that provides power and alarm handling for TMA

The following figure is a typical TMA deployment example.

2.2 TMA DESCRIPTION

The tower mounted amplifier is designed for use with vertical or cross-pole antenna. The unit is

installed near the antenna at the tower top to improve receiver sensitivity of the base station. The
employment of TMA will result in an increase of successful call attempts, reduction of call drops,
maximized data transmission rate, improved call quality and extended handset talk time. Quality
improvements will lead to increased traffic volume and user satisfaction, hence increasing network
revenue. It is recommended for use in new network roll-outs to minimize base station count, or for
upgrading of existing base stations to improve signal quality and drop call performance.

The TMA comprises of high quality band-pass filters, a pair of balanced low noise amplifiers (LNA),

bias tee, lightning protection and by-pass circuitries. The LNA bypass circuitry is activated when the DC
supply is switched off or when there is a fault in the system.

Power is supplied via external bias tees that connect between the TMA and the PDU. Each PDU is

constructed into a 19 1U form factor, and can provide power for single TMA or three units of TMA.

Main features of TMA are shown as below:

Balanced LNA design and power failure bypass for high reliability
Alarm management: DC current load simulation
Light weight and compact design
Salt spray resistance, IP67
Built-in lightning protection and vented enclosure design
EMP protection with excellent MTBF

2.3 TMA BLOCK DIAGRAM

It shows the system block diagrams of dual duplex TMA respectively. Feeder cable is connected at the BTS
port of the TMA to the BTS via a bias tee and the antenna is connected to the ANT port.

For dual duplex

TMA, one bias tee is needed for each feeder cable connected to the BTS port. Downlink and uplink signals
transmitted through the TMA are separated by filters. The uplink signal is amplified by a pair of balanced LNA
while the downlink signal takes the TX path without amplification.
In the event of DC power or LNA failure, the RF bypass will be activated to provide an alternate path for
uplink signal back to the BTS.

3.2 COMMISSIONING INSTRU CTION

3.2.1 PDU
The 1 or 2 or 3pcs PDU can be installed into one case based on needs. And the case can be installed in 19rack.
When boot time, the PDU will self-check, all of LED indicators will light on, and it will take about 10 seconds;

3.3 SAFETY
Working on tower is potentially hazardous for person whether directly or indirectly involved in the work.
Having a safety guidelines or procedure can minimize or eliminate these hazards. With this, we considered the
below mentioned requirements before actual implementation, they are as follows:

Thorough planning
Strict supervision
Personal fitness of workers
Right tools and safety gadgets

3.3.1 COMMENCEMENT OF WORK

In majority, work on Tower site will be on the property not owned by the Cellular Operators; mostly it is
located in vacant lot near residential areas or building rooftops. With this, it is necessary for the team that will
be involved in the project to conduct a survey to make a detailed planning prior to actual work
commencement.
3.3.2 SUPERVISION
Strict supervision by the Project Team Leader / Supervisor must be executed for the safety of those people
who climb the tower. It is the responsibility of the Team Leader/Supervisor to make sure that all safety
measures are taken before and during work activity.
Persons involved in climbing tower must be aware that once climbing has commenced, there are changes like
wind velocity.

Working on tower and high level requires a level of physical fitness and working on this must

be voluntary.
Factors to be considered that may stop the workers or not proceed in climbing towers:

Tower construction is not completed

Tower is not earthed
Wet paint
Rain
Risk of lightning
High winds
Poor visibility

If personnel are already working on tower, they must be alert for any sudden change in weather conditions. If
sudden change in weather is encountered, personnel working must stop and descend immediately.
