Diploma in Creative & Media

SUBJECT: DIPLOMA IN CREATIVE & MEDIA
This is a two-year course taught in around ten periods a week, with additional
periods for Additional/Specialist learning and Functional Skills. The course at John
Leggott College has a focus on Media and has been developed with the North
Lincolnshire 14 – 19 Partnership.

Who is this course aimed at?
The Diploma will be attractive to students who:
• Have a broad interest in Creative & Media related disciplines such as
advertising and marketing, graphic design, photography, interactive media, film and
TV;
• Are active learners who would enjoy working with professionals on industry
briefs;
• Enjoy developing the skills that employers and universities want such as
teamwork, self-management and independence;
• Would like the challenge of developing a media related product of their own
through an extended project;
• Would value developing a wider range of skills useful in all areas of life and
work.
Entry requirements:
For this course, you should have achieved at least 5 GCSE grades at C or above,
preferably including English and Maths. Students may be asked to produce example
portfolios of work they have done.
How will the learning take place?
In this course, we aim to develop students who show initiative, ideas, independence of
mind, an ability to examine problems, and investigative skills. These aims are met
through:
• Working on briefs set by clients from the creative and media industries;
• Debates and discussions on the issues within the creative and media professions;
• Interactive learning designed to develop understanding, apply knowledge and skills
to practical situations;
• Visits to companies, businesses, design centres and exhibitions;
• Working both individually and in teams to achieve an outcome to challenging
deadlines;
• Learning a range of technical skills including photography and filming and using

What will you learn?

Diplomas consist of three components: Principal Learning, Generic Learning and


Additional/Specialist Learning (which is other courses such as AS Levels).

Learners will follow 6 units of Principal Learning which are:


• Communicating creatively;
• Exploring professional creativity;
• Realising creativity;
• Creating opportunity;
• Working with a client;
• Realisation and review.

Learners will also undertake Generic Learning which includes:


• Work placement;
• Completion of an Extended Project (an AS qualification graded A* to E which
must be completed in order to achieve the full Diploma);
• The development of Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills (incorporated into
the principal learning and project);
• The development of Functional Skills in English, Mathematics and ICT.

In addition, the Specialist / Additional Learning consists of an accredited qualification


at the same level such as:
• An AS/A2 in Media, Graphics, Art, Photography or Drama (Specialist
Learning); or
• Any other advanced course of the 30 or so offered by the college
(Additional Learning).

How will you be assessed?

Learners will be assessed through a combination of practical activity, projects, portfolios


and external assessment. All learners will have the opportunity to develop a range of
personal skills as well as take national tests in the Functional Skills of English,
Mathematics and ICT.

Links with Employers

To further enhance the ‘real life’ aspects of the course learners will undertake:
• At least 10 days in the workplace in the Creative and Media Sector;
• Collaboration with the Creative and Media Sector and with Higher Education
including visits to workplaces, and undertaking externally set design briefs.

Enrichment

There are a number of optional Enrichment options offered by the college which you will
find to be both interesting and useful additions to your course of study, for example:

• Journalism/College Magazine;
• College Drama Production;
• A range of Music & Sport options;
• Art Academy (year 2 only).

What next?

• The Diploma is equivalent to 3 ½ A Levels and 420 UCAS points. (The current
system of entry points for university courses);
• Learners who are successful on the Diploma are able to access Higher Education
opportunities in a broad range of Creative, Performance and Media areas. Equally,
the Diploma will prepare learners for the world of work in a variety of sectors.
