Introduce one new pattern at a time. Show the new card, model
the sound or sounds, and have each student repeat individually.

2. Show all of the cards that have been taught, in order. Students
say the sounds in unison. Students say the sounds only (no key
words) while looking at the cards.
3. Teachers can use the cards that show each phonogram and key
word as pronunciation guides.
4. There are 84 phonogram cards, which teach 79 different pat-
terns. The patterns er, ar, and or are repeated. The first time
they are taught, students learn only the basic sound. The second
time, students learn all possible sounds for the patterns. The
patterns and are also repeated. They are first taught as a
basic vowel sound, and later taught as part of a set of five open3
syllable vowels.
