The role-playing game

By Simon Washbourne

Introduction
You always know where you are with a show like Star Trek. If anyones in trouble
you can bet that Kirk, Spock and the gang will rally around trying to help out and you
can bet by the end that all will be okay. Well that'
s not the case with Blakes 7, if
anyones in trouble; to hell with them. Although Blake only had his seven for about
five or six episodes, nobody seemed to care.
Created by the man who brought us the Daleks (Terry Nation), it ran for a total of
four, 13 episode seasons. Blake himself left at the end of the second season and it was
left to Avon to the lead the rebels in their fight against the relentless Federation. Also
on board was the cowardly Vila, the telepath Cally, the ex smuggler Jenna, the gentle
giant Gan the ships computers Zen and later Slave and the brilliant though arrogant
Orac. Later came the warrior Dayna, the idealistic Tarrant and the hot-headed Soolin.
Hot on the heels of the rebels was the beautiful but deadly Servalan and the evil
Travis.
This role-playing game attempts to emulate the lack of a big budget for the special
effects or the scripts. It also attempts to emulate the lack of concern for the other
characters that the team showed for one another. Great for role-playing!
The role of the Scriptwriter
Before play commences decide by whatever means you prefer who will write the
script for the session. Once it has been decided, leave the scriptwriter alone for about
15 minutes, whilst she writes down a few notes about the opening scene, what is
happening and other rough notes about the session major non-players involved and
stuff like that. Once the script is done (finished or otherwise), the script is handed to
the Director. The Scriptwriter then becomes a player suggested character Avon.
The role of the Director
The Director (called referee or gamesmaster in other rpgs) should be someone other
than the Scriptwriter, but otherwise gets elected, chosen, volunteers or is selected
randomly. The Director has the job of describing the action, reacting to what the
players do and essentially take nominal control of the game session. This might mean
picking up the pace for dramatic effect when the action is slowing, slow it down when
a breather is needed, throw in plot curves, introduce the npcs and speak and act their
roles, and describe events as they happen.
To start, the Director must introduce the opening scene as set out by the Scriptwriter.
This will often be on board the Liberator, but neednt be. Once that is done, it is up to
the players to decide what they will do, in the guise of the characters they are playing.
They dont get to read the script, although the Scriptwriter will have a slightly unfair
advantage, at least initially!
The Players
The players take the roles of the characters in Blakes 7. It is suggested that the
character sheets are handed out randomly, although it might be best that the

Scriptwriter takes the character of Avon (or perhaps Blake if he is around in your
Episode).
Character sheets
There is a character sheet for each of the characters in the series. On the sheet are
listed a number of skills. For some skills, such as Acting and Accuracy, they are
universal i.e. all the characters have them. For others, only one character will have the
skill, because it is that characters speciality.
The skills are numbered, with numbers ranging from 5 through to 19. This represents
the chance on a d20 that the character will succeed when he tries to perform an action
employing that particular skill. If the roll on the d20 is lower than the number written
alongside the skill, the character succeeds. If it lower, he fails.
E.g. Avon wishes to operate a computer in a research station the group have found on
a deserted planet. The player needs to roll a d20. In this case only a 20 represents a
failure, because Avons Computer skill is 19.
Skills
Accuracy - used in gun combat to decide whether or not your character hits the
enemy.
Acting - this is a fairly well used skill in the game. It is also a bit different. Acting
rolls are called for by the Director at certain key points in the episode. When the
player succeeds the roll, all is well. When the player fails the roll, the player must
read out one of the random lines written on his character sheet, as if his character is
actually saying it (regardless of how silly it might seem to the situation). The random
line is decided randomly (of course), by rolling a further d20 and reading what it says
alongside the number rolled.
When two players have failed their lines at the same time, the player whose character
has the best Acting skill can decide whether he says his line first or after the other
player.
In addition, the Director may choose to make the line a part of the scene or a part of
the plot, if she feels it works in the context of the game. So for example, Soolin says
Have I ever met Servalan? after failing her Acting roll and then rolling a 12 to
determine the random line.
The Director likes this and runs with it saying You have now my dear, as Servalan
walks into the room pointing a blaster at Soolin.
Key moments to make an Acting Skill roll
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

When the Director has finished describing the opening scene.

When a character has been hit in combat.
When the Liberator (or Scorpio) has been hit in space combat.
Whenever a character fails a bravery roll.
Whenever Servalan or Travis appear (unless their appearance was as a result
of a failed Acting roll in the first place)
6. When a prop fails.
7. Whenever the Director wishes (i.e. is stuck for ideas).

Brawl - used in close quarters fighting.

Bravery - used initially at the start of any combat situation, but also in any other
situation where danger could be involved to the character.
Charisma - is used to influence npcs, be they rebel leaders, federation troopers or
Servalan herself!
Computers - the skill needed to operate and access information from all types of
computer and similar devices.
Electronics - the skill of figuring out, wiring, repairing or similar, any piece of
electronic equipment, particularly surveillance devices and security locks.
Fast Draw - a successful roll will mean the character can whip out her gun and have
the chance to fire it before anyone else, even if the opponent already had his gun out.
Perception - the skill of noticing small details and hidden or disguised things.
Pilot - the skill of piloting and navigating spacecraft and aircraft.
Resistance - this represents toughness and ability to withstand punishment. It is used
a bit differently to the other skills.
When a character is hit in gun combat (i.e. rifles, pistols etc) the player needs to roll
below his resistance score. Success means the character shrugged it off or avoided the
worst effects etc. There is no real effect. Resistance is reduced by 2 points though,
until medical attention is received.
Failure to make the roll means the character is badly wounded and in dire need of
medical aid. All further skill checks are at 5 and resistance is reduced by five points.
In close combat, a successful resistance roll means the character has shrugged off the
blow (reduce resistance by 1 point, until rested) but failure means the character is
knocked out (revive by cold water, kick into ribs etc).
Plot Influence
This represents a way that the players can have a bit of a say in the way the episode
turns out. Each character has a number rated between 1 and 3 points. The more
influential characters have the higher number of points.
The number represents the number of times in an episode that the player may interject
in a scene and by talking in character change the nature of events. The player must
speak in character and what he says must be plausible, and cannot change what is
already known about a situation, although it is quite possible for it to be totally
different to the script that the Director was given.
For example the script given to the Director suggests that the basic plot for the
episode involves Avon & Co attempting to locate a specific component for a
computer on planet Zerox.
(The planet has a hostile environment and is considered long since deserted although
the computer is believed still to be there, buried in vaults beneath the surface this
latter bit is unknown to the players, but was written by the Scriptwriter).

Avons player assumes it is a federation planet, so he decides to influence the plot. He

uses one of his points and says I already know the rebel leader, a good man called
Varen and whilst you were all sleeping, I contacted him. He tells me the computer is
guarded by a contingent of federation troops. However, there are air ducts that lead
into the base and Varen will help us get in this way.
Thus the original idea of a deserted hostile planet has now changed to a federationheld planet teaming with federation troops and rebel forces.
NPC Mooks
These are the Director-controlled cannon-fodder that the characters may come up
against during the game. They will have the same basic skills as the characters, but
their levels of ability will be 4 in each. They never have any lines other than perhaps
to groan or grunt as they get shot. If an NPC that was originally planned as a Mook
gets to speak, then he is immediately raised to an Extra.
NPC Extras
These are a step up from Mooks. They are a bit tougher and usually get to speak in an
episode. Their levels of skill are at 6.
Major NPCs
These are often federation or rebel leaders and may be characters that are the main
focus of an episode. They can have skills ranging from 8 to 10.
The NPC Villains
These are Servalan, Travis and the like. They have skills at similar levels to the player
characters. They also have the unique skill of Contrived Escape at a level between
15 to 19. This means that whatever happens to them, however hard the characters try
to prevent it, somehow the villain will get away.
Locations, Scenery and Props
The budget for Blakes 7 was not particularly high. This is evidenced by the number of
quarries, gravel pits and disused factories and warehoses that the on-planet action
took place in. At least in these locations the scenery wouldnt wobble like it would in
some interior scenes or exotic locations.
To represent this, locations and props have a wobble rating. The Director gets to roll
for this whenever some form of violent activity ensues or when props or supposedly
fixed items are used. If the prop or item fails its wobble rating, it quite literally
wobbles. A wobbly item results in the characters having to make an acting skill roll.
A failure means that the character forgets her lines. In game terms this means that she
stands motionless and unable to act for several seconds.

The Main Characters

Subject : Roj Blake
Episodes : 1 - 52
Talent : Leader, idealist, strategist, activist
A natural-born leader, Blake assumes command of the abandoned Liberator after
being framed by the Federation. Although his quest takes him to many worlds, Blake
often expresses a primary desire for the heavily-guarded Earth. A hopeless idealist,
it'
s Blake'
s almost naive trust in people that begins to let him down. Often outsiders
will be taken at face value. The man around whom all of the series events centre,
Blake is a resistance leader struggling to overthrow the Federation regime.
It'
s this single-mindedness that gets Gan killed, and it'
s fair to say that after this event,
Blake'
s leadership is never as strong again. However, Blake'
s growing fanaticism,
coupled with his misplaced trust in Avon are what eventually lead to his ultimate
downfall. Testing Tarrant with psychological games, Blake angers a paranoid, nearly
insane Avon, who shoots him in cold blood. When he is lost in the aftermath of the
galactic war, his presence is still felt throughout. After spending over a year searching
for him, Avon is confronted by an implanted image. Believing Blake to be dead, it
sends Avon on a downward spiral into psychosis.
Subject : Jenna Stannis
Episodes : 1 - 26
Talent : Smuggler, excellent pilot, devious, intelligent
Blake first meets Jenna in a holding cell on the way to Cygnus Alpha, along with
Vila. Its clear from the outset that Jenna feels an attraction to Blake, though some of
the others, most notably Avon, do not find her completely trustworthy. One of the
stronger, more assured female crewmembers, Jenna was also, save for Tarrant,
arguably the best pilot in the group
Jennas stern intellect make her a valuable asset, with her using duplicity to rescue the
rest of the crew in Bounty. However, she also agrees to strand Blake for financial gain
as early as Cygnus Alpha, proving that she is far from loyal. Although they resent
each other intensely, it appears that Jenna had more in common with Avon than any
of the other crewmembers. After the Liberator is temporarily damaged in the galactic
war, she leaves with Blake in a life-support capsule. Later she contacts Orac to tell
him that she is on a cargo carrier in transit to Morphamel. Ultimately Jenna'
s strongwilled and self-destructive nature appear to have resulted in her death, with Blake
claiming ambiguously to Tarrant that she "tried to run the blockade once too often."

Subject : Vila Restal

Episodes : 1 - 52
Talent : Lock pick, thief, entertainer, magician
The only character to appear in every episode of Blake'
s 7, Vila first meets Blake
while trying to steal his watch! Vila largely acts more of a hindrance than a help to the
group dynamic, yet his lock-picking ability proves to be an invaluable asset on several
occasions. In many senses it'
s possible to argue that Vila is the most mysterious and
guarded member of the crew. While he appears to be superficially jovial and below
average intelligence, it'
s identified on several occasions that Vila actually has a very
high IQ and pretends to be stupid.
This can be identified in episodes such as Stardrive, where he feigns drunkenness in
order to manipulate the other two, stronger males of the group. Its also scarcely
evidenced how sensitive Vila actually is. His affection in City at the Edge of the
World is disguised by humour, and only in moments of drunkenness do his true
feelings of loss and resentment come forth. Vila is always more comfortable in male
company (except for Tarrant'
s) and appears to have a special bond with Avon.
However, this takes a downturn towards the end of their relationship, and Vila is the
second to be killed after Avons actions lead to all their deaths.
Subject: Kerr Avon
Episodes : 2 - 52
Talent : Computer expert, robotics specialist, genius, psychopath
Avon was life sentenced to a penal colony after attempting to steal five million credits
from the Federation banking system. Bound for Cygnus Alpha, he mounts a revolt
with Blake, where they discover the Liberator. Growing to despise Blake, Avon
commandeers the ship after Blake and Jenna go missing in a battle at Star One. The
most distant and cold of the crew, we rarely learn of anyone for whom Avon holds
affection. We are told he has a brother, and a former lover, Anna Grant. However, of
the crew he only seems to hold genuine affection for Cally and Vila, with his opinion
of Blake a distorted love/hate relationship.
After Cally is killed, Avon appears to undergo a greater psychosis, often failing more
frequently in missions, and undergoing a sexually-charged hostility with his nemesis,
Servalan. However, it'
s possible that only Avon really knows how he feels. Despite
open hostility towards Blake, he saves his life many times. Yet while he halfheartedly claims to hate Vila, it comes as a shock to Restal when Avon attempts to
actually kill him in Orbit. As for the rest of the crew, then he displays mistrust
towards Jenna, dimissive disdain towards Gan'
s limited intelligence and outright
hatred of Tarrant. Eventually Avon'
s increasingly isolated and extreme personality
leads to the death of his crew, and his own apparent demise.
Subject : Olag Gan
Episodes : 2 - 18
Talent : Loyal, earnest, strong
After helping Blake mount an unsuccessful revolution on board the prison ship
London, Gan is rescued from a penal colony on Cygnus Alpha. The most
unwaveringly loyal of Blake'
s crew, even Gan begins to question Blakes fanaticism.
Quite clearly the least intelligent member of Blake'
s crew, Gan'
s generally light
temperament and loyalty produce an ease within the original group.
The only member to genuinely dislike Gan is Avon, who is frequently irritated by his
limited intelligence. When Gan is killed in Pressure Point, Avon uses the fact to

further undermine Blake'

s leadership. It can be argued that Gan'
s death indirectly
leads to the deaths of all the crew. With his naive, unquestioning manner and easygoing disposition, Gan holds the group together. After Gan is killed, Blake becomes
yet more fanatical, while the rest of the crew become hostile, cynical and embittered.
Ultimately, his death begins a long chain of events that result in an antagonistic team
that get themselves killed. They may have survived for two more years, but after the
loss of Gan it was a sad inevitability...
Subject : Cally
Episodes : 4 - 40
Talent : freedom fighter, telepath, empath
A telepath from Auron, the Liberator crew encounter Cally on the planet Saurian
Major. Cally joins their quest, and supports Avon through Blakes absence. Initially
quite mistrustful towards the crew, and enjoying a prickly relationship with Jenna,
Cally soon settles down to be one of the more caring, sensitive members of the team.
As early as Duel, Cally seems to express a greater affinity for Avon than the others,
possibly due to them both being, in many senses, outsiders. Its during Sarcophagus
that her love for him is admitted, albeit via a host possessing her mind and body. It'
s
clear that after Blake and Jenna go missing, its Cally that holds the group together.
The open hostility Tarrant and Avon display towards one another is only kept in
check by her slightly maternal nature.
Its also arguable that Cally'
s death indirectly leads to the deaths of the others. While
he rarely references it, without her Avon develops an increased psychosis. It'
s this
lack of judgement that causes all of their deaths on Guada Prime, illustrating that
Callys caring nature was one of the key elements in keeping them all together.
Subject : Dayna Mellanby
Episodes : 27 - 52
Talent : Weaponry expert, skilled in hand-to-hand combat
After his part in the galactic war, Avon'
s life capsule crashlands on the planet Sarran,
where Dayna has been living with her father and adopted sister. When her family are
killed, Dayna leaves with Avon, and swears revenge against Servalan. Perhaps the
most dysfunctional member of the Liberator crew, Dayna can be in turns sensitive,
loyal and moral, yet aggressive, violent and murderous.
Much of this can be drawn to her background, with her father an ex-rebel leader who
was killed by Servalan, and Justin, an older man who her father had trusted, implied
to have taken advantage of her. There'
s a sense that the real Dayna is trying to get
through, and she shows fear in Warlord, and a love of song in Sarcophagus. However,
her instincts constantly get in the way, particularly where Servalan is involved. Her
long-sought revenge against Servalan was never to be, however, as Dayna was the
first of the Scorpio crew to be killed in the massacre on Gauda Prime.
Subject : Del Tarrant
Episodes : 27 - 52
Talent : First-class pilot, knowledge of Federation systems and procedures
An ex-Federation citizen who had trained as a Space Captain, Tarrant was a deserter
who was on the Federation'
s wanted list. After becoming embroiled in the galactic
war, he found his life capsule aboard the Liberator, where he joined Avon in his quest
to overthrow the regime. Possibly the most arrogant of the Liberator crew, Tarrant'
s
abrasive nature initially causes him to clash with everyone, save perhaps Dayna.

However, it must be acknowledged that Tarrant is also brave and loyal, if misguided.
On two occasions he uses the threat of murder to try and entice Vila to do his bidding,
while the posturing, machismo-led relationship between him and Avon ultimately
leads to Avon threatening to shoot him. After the Liberator is destroyed, it perhaps
causes despondency in Tarrant, leading him to become more placid and less
temperamental. This also highlights Tarrants naivety, with him displaying almost
blind faith in Cancer and Servalan, amongst others. Its perhaps this lack of
experience which ultimately causes Tarrants downfall, and that of the rest of the
crew. After misjudging Blake, it'
s Tarrants ill-considered words that lead to Avon
killing Blake, and the subsequent deaths of Tarrant and all his teammates.
Subject : Soolin
Episodes : 40 - 52
Talent : Mercenary, fast-draw, weapons specialist
Soolin grew up on the planet of Gauda Prime with her farming family. A lawless
world, she was orphaned at eight, and killed the men responsible for her familys
deaths. When Avon and his crew meet Soolin, she offers them her services as she has
grown into a formidable mercenary. Soolin first meets Avon and his allies when her
insane partner, Dorian, brings them back to their shared base on Xenon. After Dorian
is killed, she joins them in Dorian'
s ship, the Scorpio, in a quest against the
Federation.
While initially quite reticent to engage with the others, Soolin soons builds a rapport
with Avon, and shows herself to be one of the more intelligent members of the crew.
It is Soolin who devises Scorpios weapons, as well as noticing key details that the
others had overlooked in Assassin and Stardrive. Sadly, however, Soolin'
s reputation
as a quick draw fails her as she is seemingly killed, along with the rest of the Scorpio
crew, by a squadron of Federation guards in Blake.
Subject : Servalan
Episodes : 6 - 51
Talent : Ambitious, ruthless, murderous
Servalan first appears as a very administrative figure, the Supreme Commander of the
Federation'
s space operations. However, her ambition soon causes her to seize the
Presidency for herself.
Yet when the role is ousted from her, she operates from afar under the guise of
Commissioner Sleer, plotting to reclaim her former power and prestige. Servalan
claims that a lover left her broken-hearted when she was eighteen, causing her to
become addicted to power. We do learn of her ambition from other characters, such as
a former Officer whom Servalan had reported for treason when just a cadet. As her
growing psychosis seems to run parallel with Avon'
s, we soon see that she is prepared
to kill without compunction. She also frequently uses her sexuality to manipulate,
though is seen to also like being dominated, most notably with Jarvik in The Harvest
of Kairos. Left a virtual exile from her own people, Servalan is last seen attempting to
break up a coalition of planets in Warlord. Absent from the final episode, it remains
undisclosed whether "Commissioner Sleer" ever did regain her former power...
Subject : Travis Alpha 1505
Episodes : 6 - 26
Talent : Military tactician and strategist; Former Space Commander of the
Federation

Travis is an old adversary of Blake'

s, a man who ambushed him and killed his allies
before Blake was captured by the Federation. In the resulting confrontation, Traviss
face and limb were permanently disfigured, with Travis carrying a built-in laseron
destroyer on his left arm. The Federation begin to question Traviss effectiveness after
five unsuccessful attempts to destroy Blake. In the episode Weapon we learn that they
have sent him to a retraining therapist, which causes his behaviour to become more
psychotic.
After two more failed attempts to kill Blake, Travis is placed on trial by the
Federation. Charged with the murder of 1417 unarmed civilians on the planet
Sercasta, he is stripped of his rank and sentenced to execution as a civilian. Escaping
after the Liberator attacks Space Command, Travis locates Star One, and, seeking
revenge, deals with aliens to initiate the total annihilation of the human race. His plan
partially halted by the Liberator crew, while Travis himself is killed by Avon.
