UK Expats May Be
Able To Vote In The
General Election
LAST MONTH the UK Electoral Commission launched a dedicated overseas
voter registration campaign. The campaign
aims to encourage British citizens living
overseas to register to vote ahead of the
UK Parliamentary General Election, due
to take place on Thursday, May 7, 2015.
This is the first UK General Election
where people can register to vote online.
The Electoral Commission hopes that the
new online process will encourage more
UK nationals living overseas to register
to take part in elections from overseas.
Estimates show that there may be as
many as 5.5 million UK nationals living
overseas, but there are fewer than 20,000
currently on the electoral registers.
To register as an overseas voter, UK
residents overseas must have previously
been registered in a UK constituency
within the last fifteen years.
According to Alex Robertson, Director of Communications at the Electoral
Commission:
A lot of people arent aware that its
possible to register as an overseas voter for
the General Election. We need to challenge
the misconception that once youve moved
overseas you cant take part. Many people
can and now its easier than ever to take
the first step by registering online.

THE CHIEF POLITICAL commentator

for The Daily Telegraph has resigned
over the British newspapers coverage of
the HSBC scandal, alleging last month it
was part of an effort to downplay critical
coverage of the bank to preserve lucrative
advertising contracts.
Peter Oborne accused the newspaper of
carrying out a form of fraud on its readers by burying coverage of leaks showing
that the bank helped wealthy clients evade
taxes, which has drawn massive attention
from the rest of Britains media.
You needed a microscope to find the
Telegraph coverage, Osborne said in
a commentary explaining his decision.
Nothing on Monday, six slim paragraphs

seven paragraphs deep in the business
pages on Wednesday.
DISTINCTION
The Telegraph countered that the
distinction between advertising and our
award-winning editorial operation has
always been fundamental to our business.
We utterly refute any allegation to the
contrary.
HSBC declined to comment.
The Guardian newspaper, one of the
publications that helped break the story
on the leaked documents, has alleged that
HSBC put its advertising account with the
newspaper on pause amid discussions
over the papers series on the activities of
HSBCs Swiss private bank.
HSBC did the same thing with the
Telegraph, Oborne told the BBC.
Theres a pattern developing here that
when HSBC was being investigated, the
advertising dries up.
Oborne alleged that the newspaper
avoided critical coverage of HSBC after
the bank pulled advertising from the paper
following a series of stories in late 2012
on HSBCs branch in Jersey, an island in
the English Channel that is often seen as
a tax haven.

The technology aims to liberate future generations from inherited diseases,

The UKs House of Commons voted

This is a bold step to take, but it is a

The technology is completely different from that used to create genetically

RRThink Pink? Campaign

Bus To Draw Women Voters
Backfires For Labour

BRITAINS Labour Party has launched

an election campaign targeting women
voters but its chosen vehicle, a bright
pink bus, has backfired even before it
hit the road.
The buss color has drawn scorn and
ridicule, with some calling it patronizing
and sexist. Critics on Twitter compared
it to a Barbie van or a bachelorette
party limo.
The opposition party, which says it
will highlight policies on issues such
as childcare and domestic violence,
hopes the bus will promote its woman

last election.
Reacting to the backlash last month,
Labours deputy leader Harriet Harman

Britain Starts Public

Trial Of Driverless Cars
RR By Sylvia Hui

DRIVERLESS cars are hitting

Britains public roads for the
first time, giving a glimpse of
future travel thats billed as safer
and more efficient.
Britain unveiled four prototype selfdrive cars February 11, launching the
countrys first public trials ahead of a series
of planned rule reviews to accommodate
the new technology.
Officials showed off four types of autonomous vehicles under trial, including
a shuttle that looks like a larger golf cart
and a compact two-seater pod. Journalists took short rides on the shuttle, which
zipped around a public square outside
central Londons O2 Arena as curious
pedestrians looked on.
The project was still in the early days,
Transport Minister Claire Perry said, but
she added the new technology has the
potential to make roads safer and attract
global investment.
Britain has ambitions to lead development in driverless cars, which are also
being tested in US cities by companies
including Google. Auto companies from
Mercedes-Benz to Nissan are also developing self-drive vehicles, though most are not
ready to go on public roads and highways
commercially.
CHANGES
Regulation and legal changes are a
major hurdle. Officials say fully driverless cars are unlikely to be used on British
roads until 2030.
Britains government, which is spending 19m on four trial centers around the
country, says it will amend and review
domestic road regulations by 2017. One
focus will be on establishing liability when
a self-drive car crashes.

Alves felt compelled to change his body

Included in his list of surgeries have been
nose jobs, six pack implants and fillers.
Alves, 31, from London, says other boys

Alves added: I do not like to focus on

Growing up I felt left alone as no one wanted

Central London is set to have its first Las

Genting Casinos wants to create a 30,000

Residents are horrified by the plans, being considered by Kensington and Chelsea

A spokesman from a local Residents

people and cars to this largely residential
neighbourhood.
The casino would take over the ground

about 1,500 gamblers would visit it each day.

severe than drug or alcohol addiction.

Three Missing Schoolgirls

Reported Smuggled Into Syria

RRBabies From DNA Of 3 People

Continued from page 1

But critics say it crosses a red line, since
changes made to embryos will be passed
on to future generations, with the potential
for unforeseen consequences.
PROTESTS
The protests are about protecting children from the severe health risks of these
unnecessary techniques and protecting
everyone from the eugenic designer-baby
future that will follow from this, said
David King, director of the secular watchdog group Human Genetics Alert.
The technology altering a human egg
or embryo before transferring it into a
mother with defects in her mitochondria,
the energy-producing structures outside
a cells nucleus. These genetic defects
can result in diseases including muscular
dystrophy, heart, kidney and liver failure
and severe muscle weakness.
Scientists would remove the nucleus
DNA from the egg of the prospective
mother and insert it into a donor egg from
which the nucleus DNA has been removed.
The resulting embryo would have the
nucleus DNA from its parents but the
mitochondrial DNA from the donor. This
can be done two ways before or after
fertilization in the techniques approved.
Scientists say more than 99 percent
of the DNA in the resulting child would
come from its parents, with a tiny fraction
coming from the donor egg.
OPPORTUNITY
Britains Chief Medical Officer, Dr
Sally Davies, said the law would give
women with mitochondrial disease the
opportunity to have children without
passing on devastating genetic disorders.
Britain has long been a leader in reproductive technology; the worlds first baby
from in vitro fertilization, Louise Brown,
was born in the UK in 1978.
A spokesman for Prime Minister David
Cameron said he was a strong supporter
of the legislation. Camerons severely
disabled son, Ivan, died at age six in 2009
from a rare form of epilepsy.
US regulators are moving more slowly:
Scientists at a US Food and Drug Administration meeting on the techniques warned it
could take decades to determine if they are
safe. Meanwhile, experts say the techniques
are likely being used elsewhere, such as in
China and Japan, but are mostly unregulated.

DAYS OF concern that three missing

teenagers may have been heading to join
Islamic State militants appeared to have
been confirmed at time of Press. The three
London Schoolgirls were thought to have
been smuggled into Syria from Turkey.
The girls families had issued emotional
appeals urging the girls to return home, but
the straight-A schoolmate students left
no messages.
The relatives of Shamima Begum and
Amira Abase, both 15, and Kadiza Sultana,
16, broke down in tears as they spoke of
their loss in televised interviews on British media.
We miss you. We cannot stop crying,
said Abase Hussen, Amiras father, clutching a teddy bear Amira gave to her mother
on Mothers Day.
The case has captured wide attention in
Britain, where authorities say at least 500
people have left for Syria to join extremists
and fear they pose a terrorism threat when
they return.
Authorities have been criticised after it
emerged that, before the girls disappeared,

Man Charged With

Attempting To Obtain
Chemical Weapons

BRITISH POLICE say a man from

northwest England has been charged
with trying to obtain a chemical
weapon.
Greater Manchester Police says
Mohammed Ammer Ali, from Liverpool, was arrested after officers raid
properties in the city last month as
part of a counter-terrorism operation.
He is charged with attempting
to have a chemical weapon in his
possession between January 10 and
February 12.
Ali, 31, was due to appear in a
London court.
The police force said that officers
had not uncovered a terrorist plot or
the threat an imminent attack either
at home or abroad.

Begum had online contact with a fourth

girl, Aqsa Mahmood, who left for Syria in
2013 to become a jihadi bride.
Aamer Anwar, the lawyer for Mahmoods family, argued that the police
failed to engage with communities.
I cannot see why this isnt considered
a child protection issue, he said. These
young girls have been groomed online.
They have been trafficked.
The families said there were no signs
that the girls were interested in extremism
or had planned to go abroad.
The police said the girls were interviewed in 2014 in connection with the disappearance of another friend, but said there
was nothing to suggest they were at risk.

UK Inflation Falls To Its

Lowest Level On Record

BRITISH OFFICIALS say the rate of inflation fell in January to an annual 0.3 percent
the lowest level on record amid falling
energy prices and supermarket price wars.
The Office of National Statistics said
Tuesday the rate is down from Decembers
rate of 0.5 percent.
Bank of England Governor Mark Carney has predicted that inflation may turn
negative in the coming months, but said he
believed low inflation to be a short-term
phenomenon that would boost spending
among consumers.
Inflation is well below the central banks
two percent target rate, but Carney told
reporters last week the bank will look
through what it sees as temporary drops.
Policymakers fear long periods of
sustained falling prices, because it could
encourage consumers to delay purchases
in hopes of bargains later.

remember a few years back at one
of the Sarasota Highland Games,
there was a booth that sold Welsh

near our booth, but we were watching the customers buy them, open
and start to eat them, and then
throw them out they were really tasteless and dry. We werent
offering them at that time. But when
we first had our tea room, two
Welsh customers shared their tips
on making them which I tried and
they turned out beautifully. They are
really like a soft cookie, and can be
eaten plain or with butter.
Speaking of the Tea room; The

now called The British Corner Shop,

Church Of England Appeals To

Voters To Take Part In Campaign

RR By Danica Kirka

CHURCH of England bishops

appealed to Christians last month
to take part in the politics ahead
of upcoming elections, calling for
a fresh moral vision for Britain at
time of disillusionment.
The bishops said in a 52-page
letter that it is the duty of every
Christian to vote May 7. The
letter, the first of its kind before
a vote, touches on topics such as
the concept of a living wage and
Britains relationship with the
European Union.
The Bishop of Norwich, Rt Rev.
Graham James, said the bishops are
aware that voices in British society,
notably comedian Russell Brand,
have been arguing that voting is
pointless.

European Court: UK Prison Vote Ban Breaches Rights

THE EUROPEAN Court of
Human Rights has ruled that
the rights of more than a thousand prisoners in Britain were
breached when they were prevented from voting in elections.
The case was brought by
inmates who were behind bars
during various elections be-

tween 2009 and 2011.

The court ruled last month
that Britains policy of banning
convicted prisoners from voting
violated the right to a free election a decision consistent with
its previous calls for a legal
change in Britain. However, the
court rejected the applicants

claims for compensation and

legal costs.
The ruling does not compel
Britain to change its law to
give voting rights to prisoners.
Last month, the Ministry of
Justice said it believed the topic
should ultimately be decided

While one may think that the

bishops of the Church of England
dont quite have the sex appeal of
Russell Brand, we think that we
should counter it, James said.
The bishops urged a debate
on whether Britain should have a
nuclear deterrent and an honest
account of how we must live in
order to prevent future generations from inheriting a denuded
and exhausted planet. They also
addressed some of the more loaded
rhetoric about public policy, including the often degrading way
in which welfare recipients are
described.
UNDESERVING
For instance, when those who
rely on social security payments
are all described in terms that

imply they are undeserving, dependent and ought to be selfsufficient, it deters others from
offering the informal, neighborly
support which could ease some of
the burden of the welfare state,
the letter said.
Though not a shopping list of
preferred policies, it forced Prime
Minister David Cameron to defend
his employment and welfare policies many of which have been
challenged as unfairly targeting
the poor. The Conservative Party
leader stressed his governments
effort to create jobs and cut taxes.
A welfare system that pays
people to stay idle when they
could work _that is not the sign of
a strong economy or a strong or
good society, he said.

TV Debates To Involve Everyone

ONE OF the big questions this general election

is whether there will be a televised debate
involving all the party leaders. It is easy
enough to assume that we always have one
so why should there be any doubt this time?
In fact, 2010 was the first at which there
had ever been a televised debate. The Prime
Minister of the day, Gordon Brown, felt he
had no choice despite the fact that he had
everything to lose and indeed he did. His
opinion poll ratings were so poor he staked it
all on three televised debates pitting himself
against David Cameron and Nick Clegg.
The savviest TV operative won handsdown, that being Clegg. His performances
sparked an outbreak of what was described
at the time as Cleggmania. What he did was
succeed in distancing himself from the other
two in such a way as to suggest that the
two main parties had everything carved out
between them, which left him speaking for
the common man.
One of his techniques was to name-check
all his questioners, Well, Gill, I cant say that
I agree with you but Very flattering for Gill
to be so instantly and publicly acknowledged
and adding to the public perception of Clegg
as a newcomer, bright-eyed and bushytailed. Definitely one of us.
SENSE
It did not after all make a huge difference to
the electoral outcome though the sense that
Clegg and Cameron were co-conspirators
against the established and awkward Prime
Minister led almost inevitably to their coalition
agreement a few days later.
This General Election is considerably different from any in recent memory. We have
gone well beyond two-party politics that in
the old days was only disturbed during byelections when a third party generally some
manifestation of the Liberals mopped up the
protest vote and achieved startling swings. It
was a pattern that started way back in 1958
with the Torrington by-election, the first byelection win for the Liberals since 1929, and
continued up to the point where Coalition
Government kicked in and the Liberals
ceased to be a credible party of protest.
DECLINE
The decline of the Liberals reflected was
by the rise of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) which started by grabbing
seats first in the 2013 council elections,
then taking first place in 2014s European
elections, responding to a nave view we
dont want Brussels telling us we have to
have straight cucumbers. Support for UKIP
strengthened as Nigel Farage (its leader)
progressed the argument from foreigners telling us what to do, to foreigners descending
on us in droves taking all our jobs, houses
and wimmin.
The simplicity of UKIPs view chimed with
the generally simplistic attitudes of the British
electorate to the point where David Cameron
has had to promise an in/out referendum.
Their recent acquisition of two seats in the
House of Commons has given their drive
towards power in the general election genuine
momentum.
TRACTION
The last thing Cameron wants is to give
UKIP any traction whatsoever. And anyone
with half a brain would know that seeing
Farage on the box arguing on an equal footing with the Prime Minister would give him a
huge boost, seriously imperilling the Tories
chances of gaining a clear majority.
It wouldnt do the Labour Party under
Ed Miliband much good either since UKIP
seem to be mounting a real challenge in
northern working class areas, especially

the big cities. But

Miliband has a different enemy altogether
in the south the
Green Party which
has very respectable middle-class
left-wing tendencies
and is picking up
support very nicely.
Cameron argued
that if the debates
should be widened to include UKIP, they
should also involve the Greens since they
have an MP and their voice deserves to be
heard. After all, if he has to contend with
right-wing UKIP why shouldnt Labour have
to contend with a left-wing challenge.
SOLUTION
For a while Camerons argument held

good though the broadcasters offered a

solution which had very little appeal. In 1993,
Roy Hattersley, deputy leader of the Labour
Party, failed to appear for the third time on
a TV quiz programme. The producer had
catered for his absence by placing an empty
chair among the panellists with a tub of lard
on it to represent the somewhat physically
large absence of Hattersley.
Now broadcasters came up with the idea
of staging the TV debates but with an empty
chair if one of the debaters should fail to appear. But with Cameron insisting on having
the Greens in the debates, the TV authorities
dropped the empty chair idea in favour of a
new format in which the SNP and Plaid Cymru
are included.
So we will now have three debates:
one putting David Cameron up against Ed
Miliband, and two others with all seven

Official: UK Police Need More

Stun Guns Due To Terror Threat

THE HEAD of Britains Police Federation says all front-line officers need to be
equipped with stun guns because of the
rising terror threat.
Chairman Steve White told British
news outlets January 30 that terrorists
have turned to lone-wolf style tactics that
can bring terrorism to virtually any town
or city.
He cited the 2013 murder of soldier Lee
Rigby in by two al-Qaida inspired extrem-

ists using a meat cleaver and knives as an

example of the risk.
White says the threat level against police has been raised two levels recently,
leaving many in the largely unarmed police
force vulnerable.
A limited number of police are already
equipped with stun guns.
The national threat level is severe,
indicating that police and intelligence
officials believe an attack is highly likely.

16-Year-Old Faces Biological Toxin Charge

A 16-YEAR-OLD boy from northwest England has been charged with trying to
obtain a biological toxin.
Greater Manchester Police said February 18 that the boy, whose name was not
released because of his age, had been charged with attempting to acquire a biological
toxin or agent. It did not identify the substance.
The boy is due to appear in a youth court.
He was arrested In the Manchester area two days earlier on suspicion of involvement in terrorism. A 16-year-old girl arrested with him was released without charge.
Police have said the investigation is not linked to an international terrorist plot.
The charge comes a day after a 31-year-old man from Liverpool appeared in court
on a charge of trying to purchase the deadly toxin ricin.

UK Sets Record Levels

Of Visitors Last Year

FIGURES from the Office for National Statistics revealed that the
number of tourists visiting the
UK in 2014, and the amount they
spent reached record levels.
Showing an increase of six
percent 34.8 million non-Britons
visited the UK last year, an
compared to 32.8 million visits
made in 2013.
The visitors spent 21.73bn,
three percent higher than 2013
and 21 percent higher than in
2011.
Tourism Minister Helen Grant
said she was delighted tourists were visiting in record
numbers.
The number of trips to the UK
taken by North American visitors last year rose four percent
to 3.69 million, while visits by
Europeans increased seven
percent to 25.83 million.
VisitBritain chief executive
Sally Balcombe said the coun-

try had achieved its second

consecutive annual record and
further growth was expected.
Tourism is increasingly becoming an essential part of the
wider success of our economy,
she said.
Immigration and Security
Minister James Brokenshire said
the figures were tremendous
news for the UK.
He said: Britain is open for
business and I am delighted to
see people from all around the
globe coming to the UK to see
our historic sites and sample our
vibrant culture.
This shows that our reforms
are building an immigration system which works in the national
interest by clamping down on
those who want to cheat the
rules while ensuring our doors
remain open to leisure and
business visitors from around
the world.

parties vying for attention Conservatives,

Labour, LibDems, UKIP, Greens and the two
nationalist parties.
NULLIFY
One thing is certain debates in this
form should nullify the effect that UKIP
might have expected to have had. Farage
has been adopting Cleggs stance from five
years back: the plain-speaking man of the
people seeking popular approval in order to
break into the comfortable politicians club.
When we discover who exactly are the party
leaders of the Greens, SNP and Plaid Cymru,
I would imagine Nigel Farage will seem very
much part of the establishment.
The debates apart, very little has impinged
upon public consciousness as the general
election campaign swings into top gear. The
Tories are banging on about how they have
revived the economy which was destroyed by

Labour; Labour is firing all guns at the Tory

neglect of the NHS; the LibDems are saying
theyve got it right all the way down the line
as they prepare for electoral wipe-out; UKIP is
still calling for exit from the European Union,
and everyone else is vainly shouting, Hey,
were here too!
We have entered the age of five- or sixparty politics and no-one has the faintest idea
of what will happen in May.
One thing seems pretty certain and it is that
if a hung parliament is the likeliest outcome,
not one single word of what the politicians tell
us they will do during the televised debates
will mean a thing. In the world of coalitions,
the last thing you get is what you vote for
and the last thing youll find out is what you
voted for!

Impossible To Set Date

For UK Iraq War Report
THE MAN leading an inquiry into
Britains contentious role in the Iraq
war said last month that he cant estimate when his long-delayed report
might be published.
John Chilcot was pressed by a committee of lawmakers about the publication date for his report. He began his
inquiry in 2009 and heard from the
final witness in 2011.
Chilcot conceded last month that his
report wouldnt be published before
Britains national election in May.
Last month, he said its impossible
to say when it would be ready and he
didnt want to raise false hopes.
The release was initially stalled by
wrangling over the inclusion of classified material, including conversations
between then-Prime Minister Tony
Blair and President George W Bush.
It is being further delayed to give
individuals it mentions a chance to
respond.

Chilcot also told the lawmakers that

a member of his five-person inquiry
panel, historian Martin Gilbert, died
last month.
Chilcot, a former senior civil servant, said despite the delays he was
determined to produce a report that
gives the government, Parliament,
the public, and particularly all those
who have been deeply affected by
events in Iraq, the answers they deserve.
All of us are determined to get
this thing done, he said. None of us
thought it would take this long.
Britains participation in the 2003
US-led invasion was deeply controversial at the time, and became more so
when no trace of Saddam Husseins
alleged weapons of mass destruction
were found.
Between 2003 and the British withdrawal in 2009, 179 UK troops died
in Iraq.

in the wedding the vintage car hire, Hello, no
the wedding is off, I dont
need a car thank you.
Company: Would you
like us to send you more
details? Her: No, the
wedding is off. Them:
Well perhaps a different
color then, Im sure we
can make it work. Her
No thanks, Im not having a wedding, its off.
And we go through the challenges of trying to
make everyone understand that there is no
wedding. Friends try to make her feel better
with, Oh its better now than later, etc.
As many can relate to its hard to be a
single lady in your prime who just doesnt
have it all together. She writes a column
and gets invited to a lot of parties and her
description of arriving at one is beyond funny.
You get out of your South London minicab,
a battered Toyota driven by a traumatized
Afghani who has just fallen off the back of a
truck on the Eurostar And it goes on from
there youll be in stitches.
She is now trying to move on with her life,
dealing with the fianc having moved out and
wanting to redecorate the house but she cant
because he wouldnt take the giant fish tank.
She really wants to meet someone and live
a happily ever after life but it just doesnt
seem to be in the cards for her. She even has
yellow post-it notes on the fridge reminding
her Dont Forget to Get Married and Have
a Family. She meets a wonderful gorgeous
guy, He looked like Tom Fords better-looking
brother. He was so good looking he made Jon
Hamm from Mad Men look ugly. Theres only
one problem hes gay. The handyman doing work on her house? He might work, hes
handy, not bad looking. The fireman friend
of her neighbor hes gorgeous and brings
the entire brigade round to help her fix things.
From the outside it must have looked like a
scene from Life of Brian. She rides horses
and her and her mates decide to do a three-day
tour of the countryside well they get lost and
then get rescued another hilarious escapade.
It seems that nearly every other woman
she knows can juggle work and family life
so why cant she seem to find anyone. She
bravely deals with the realization that she
might not find someone, the challenges of
dating, holding down a job, trying to be normal while still holding out hope and frantically
searching for the right person. She even visits
a Tarot card reader. She even tries to adopt a
child at one point and they wont even let her
do that, they suggest she adopt a dog instead.
There are so many wonderful comparison and descriptions rich guys with their
Porsches and attitudes, the everyday workman just trying to get along, studly firemen,
country boys, gorgeous loving gay guys and
everyone in between. I read the book in one
sitting, it kept me laughing the whole time.
She has a gift for sure and is her stories are
so witty and relatable youll just sit nodding
your head in agreement as you read it either
from personal experience (if youre willing to
admit it) or from a friends predicaments.
Grab a copy and sit down with a glass
(or two) of wine and enjoy a really wonderful read. If this book doesnt make it to the
bestseller list I wont understand it!

THE NUMBER of anti-Semitic incidents

in Britain hit a record high last year, with
reactions to the conflict in Israel and Gaza
last summer the biggest factor accounting
for the jump, a charity said last month.
The Community Security Trust said it
recorded 1,168 incidents across the country in 2014 more than double the 535
cases documented in 2013, and the highest
yearly total since the group began monitoring anti-Semitism in Britain in 1984.
Mark Gardner, a spokesman for the
charity, said last month that it received
an unprecedented number of calls from
Jewish people fearing a Paris-style terror
attack in Britain.
Concerns about anti-Semitism in Europe have risen after a kosher supermarket
was targeted in Frances deadliest attacks
in decades. Four Jewish people were
among the 17 people killed last month by
the three gunmen, who also died.
INCREASES
Garry Shewan, Britains national police
lead for Jewish communities, said the
charitys report was in line with increases
in anti-Semitic crimes reported to police
in recent weeks.
The charity said it received 81 reports
of violent anti-Semitic assaults last year,
including a victim being verbally abused
and hit with a glass and a baseball bat in
London.
Most of the reported incidents were not
as extreme.
The most common single type of
incident in 2014 involved verbal abuse directed at random Jewish people in public,
the group said in a report. In many cases,
the victims were ordinary Jewish people,
male or female, attacked or abused while
going about their daily business in public
places, it said.
Other forms of abuse included hate
mail, threats and abuse on social media,
graffiti, and the damaging of Jewish
property.
Most of the incidents took place in
London and Manchester, the two largest
Jewish communities in the country.

Prince Charles Tours

Camp For Syrian
Refugees; UK Raises Aid
PRINCE CHARLES has toured a sprawling camp for Syrian refugees in Jordan,
chatting with residents and sampling tea
and bread on a walk down the main road.
The prince was accompanied by Britains international development minister.
Minister Justine Greening said in a statement her country will pay an additional
$150m to help displaced Syrians and
their host communities in Jordan, Turkey,
Lebanon and Iraq.
More than three million Syrians have
fled their war-torn country since 2011.
About 80,000 live in the Zaatari refugee
camp Charles visited last month.
Later, Charles also met with Jordans
king. The heir to the British throne was on
a six-day Middle East trip. He told the BBC
that the plight of Middle Eastern Christians
being persecuted by Islamic extremists is
a most agonizing situation.

FEBRUARY 19 was EastEnders big 30th

anniversary, and the culmination of, not only a
big whodunnit storyline, but almost a year-long
run up to the big birthday that was a virtual
Wheres Waldo of references to the shows
storied history. And in the UK during anniversary
week, EastEnders was broadcast LIVE for four
nights straight. In this era of social media, it is
remarkable to be able to keep a secret as big as
this one, but they did! This anniversary week did
not disappoint. It was edge of your seat fun all
the way through. And not only were there these
great live episodes, but there was a first time
ever, flashback episode, so we could all see
exactly what happened the night Lucy died
This anniversary was also Ian and Janes
wedding day, and as per usual, nothing ran
smoothly. It all started with passive aggressive
Lauren figuring out who killed Lucy, skulking
around instead of telling the cops, and then
signing the wedding gift card, I know what happened to Lucy. When it was delivered to Jane,
she looked guilty. Correction, everyone has
looked guilty and everyone had had problems
with Lucy. In the end, we found out it was little
Bobby Beale, who hit her on the head with her
jewelry box, and Jane has been concealing it all

this time to protect him. And now, Ian decides

to protect him as well, causing what could be a
permanent rift with Peter. And by the way, Lauren just found out she is pregnant with Peters
baby and used the occasion to break up with
him so we dont know if shell stay or go with
him Oh, and guess whos back? Kathy Beale!
Yes, we knew she wasnt dead, right? She didnt
come to the Square, but Phil had some big news
to tell Ian, that he didnt get to say, and then we
did see her pleading with Phil to be able to come
home. We are guessing she was in some sort
of witness relocation program. But before Phil
took off for parts unknown, Peggy stopped by
the Vic, only to be told by Mick Carter to, Get
outta my pub!
And there was a great symmetry in the
anniversary episode as well: As you may
recall, EastEnders very first episode in 1985
started out with Den, Ali and Arthur kicking in
the door to Reg Coxs bedsit, with Den uttering
the immortal words, It stinks in ere, Reg Cox
sitting in his chair, near death, having been
mugged by Nick Cotton. Well, karma finally
found Nicks address as the anniversary episode started much the same way, with three
newer characters (Stacey, Martin and Kush)
kicking in the door to #23, (burnt out since
Alfie set it on fire) to find Nick Cotton dead
from a heroin overdose. He had been squatting
there and Dot had been bringing him food, and
reluctantly scoring him some smack (which
turned out to be bad), and when he shot up
what turned out to be the fatal dose, instead
of calling for an ambulance, she decided to let
Jesus decide if Nick would live or die. He died.

And now, despite virtually everyone in Walford

trying to keep it a secret to protect Dot, she
called the Old Bill, confessed and was taken
away to jail. FREE DOT!
KUDOS to everyone at EastEnders; the
entire cast and crew for the whole run up
to this anniversary. It was such a wild ride,
it didnt really matter who killed Lucy (OK,
maybe it did especially if you had money on
it!) If there is any awards show justice, Adam
Woodyatt with win a BAFTA for his work on
this story line. It has been truly remarkable.
And speaking of remarkable, what can I say
about June Brown other than I am waiting for
Queen Elizabeth to make her a Dame already!
I have no idea how EastEnders will top this,
but it is very obvious that under the guidance
of Dominic Treadwell-Collins, this show is in
the hands of creators who love it as much as
the fans do, and that signals great things to
come! BRAVO to all!

Andrew returned to England to Tower

His reward was being sent to Chicago as

He was head hunted by Caf Royal as
banquet manager with 3.5 acres of banquet

decided it was time for a change and moved
to California which is easy going, freer than

with always an opportunity to make money,

where he met his wife Adela.

He worked at the Beverly Wilshire, Jacopos on Beverly Drive, for RUI Restaurants
Unlimited, they ran Sony Pictures Entertainment food and beverage on the studio lot
during their difficult times under Gruber and
Peters era. He brought his head chef from
Jacopos for the Baywatch set.
Andrew became tired of the crazy decisions from corporations and quit, opening
his own business, again taking his head chef
with him to open The Whale and Ale, along
with wife Adela. The Whale was turnkey so it
was busy fairly soon. They will be celebrating
their 20th anniversary later this year. The
rest is history.

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

Fifty Shades Of FATCA

(admit it, that got you interested!)
OVER THE past few months, many clients
have sent me copies of the letters theyve
received from UK high street banks asking
for information from which the banks will
decide whether or not their customer is a
US person. Obviously most of my readers
are US persons and know they have to accept
the consequences of FATCA.
What upsets me and many bank customers
though, is the tone of these letters. I know Im
showing my age at the mention of the friendly
bank manager, but I really had one once! He
was manager of the university branch, which
thinking back can hardly have been a fast-track
appointment! As many people do, I stayed with
the bank after graduating, and he often took
me to lunch in London and came to one of my
birthday parties. The relationship was friendly,
not creepy and believe me, even then I knew
the difference!
One bank, currently in the news because
of a Swiss subsidiary, sent out forms with
no address for returning them to the bank
merely the instruction to take them into your
local branch! Presumably any customer who
doesnt manage to do this can immediately be
categorised as a US person.
Another bank (in fact the one my friendly
bank manager had been with all those years
ago) accompanied their self-identification
request with a page of undertakings they
wanted customers to sign up to, as if this
was an opportunity to change the basis of
the relationship.
To my mind, these banks are operating as
quasi-government departments and have lost
sight of dealing with people as customers.
Government departments in many countries
have demanded huge financial penalties from
banks for their past wrongdoings and, in return, the banks treat their overseas customers
as if we are guilty until proven innocent!
Three years ago there was an opportunity
to comment on the proposed US-UK FATCA

agreement, which I took part in. One of the

points I made was that the confrontational
and penalty-based approach was unlikely
to be best way to deal with these issues,
particularly when there are already so many
information returns required from US taxpayers. No-one listened to me, but Im not really
surprised! The bullying approach is currently
popular (though Im not convinced it works as
a long-term strategy) and the banks are simply
following this lead.
Also in 2012, I wrote to the IRS to ask how
they can align the concern about identity theft
with the requirement for taxpayers to give their
Social Security Numbers to overseas banks
and financial institutions. They didnt respond
to me either, but Im not taking it too personally! This will be a problem at some point, and
I just hope none of my readers is caught up in
it when it happens.
In general of course, we Brits are a very
relaxed and easy-going group of people. You
really couldnt find anyone nicer than us, anywhere, but I may be a trifle biased. But whereas
expatriate Americans are very keen on making
their voices heard by the US government, we
tend to hunker down and just complain a bit.
Unless, of course, the problem is chocolate, in
which case were much more vocal.
Dont get me wrong, as anyone who knows
me at all will testify, the brown food group is
extremely important to me! But with all the
changes over the past few years, we need to
make our voices heard by the US Treasury,
to be more than collateral damage in the US
governments battle against the truly bad guys!

Shell Plans To Dismantle

Key North Sea Platform

ROYAL DUTCH Shell says it began a

public consultation last month on dismantling the Brent Delta platform in the North
Sea the first stage in decommissioning a
former bulwark of the countrys industry.
The oil company said it is recommending that the topside of the platform be
removed in one piece and taken by ship to
northeast England. The Department of Energy and Climate Change must approve the
project, which wouldnt start until next year.
A second decommissioning program for
the remaining infrastructure in the field will
be submitted separately.
Shell says Brent has produced around
four billion barrels of oil equivalent since
1976. At its peak in 1982, Brent produced
enough to meet the energy needs of around
half of all UK homes for that year.

Fitzwilliam Museum
Says Two Bronzes
May Be Work Of
Michelangelo

SCHOLARS in Britain say new evidence

has emerged that two nude male bronzes
attributed to other sculptors may be the
work of Michelangelo.
Experts from the Fitzwilliam Museum
and the University of Cambridge say
the evidence suggests the figures riding
panthers were made after Michelangelo
completed the marble David and as he
was about to embark on the Sistine Chapel
ceiling.
The museum says in a statement last
month that if the attribution is correct, the
sculptures would be the only surviving
Michelangelo bronzes in the world.
The sculptures were previously attributed to Michelangelo when they appeared
in Adolphe de Rothschilds collection in
the 19th century. But they were unsigned
and this attribution was dismissed.
Scholars re-examined them after they
were included in the 2012 Royal Academy
of Arts bronze exhibition.

ANGELINA JOLIE
has opened an academic center billed as
Britains first to focus
on women, peace and

The Hollywood actress hopes the center at the London School

campaign for womens rights. She said
last month there is no stable future for a
world in which crimes committed against
women go unpunished.
The university says the center will study
the participation of women in conflict and
on ending impunity for rape and sexual
violence in war.
Jolie, a UN special envoy, co-founded
a campaign on preventing sexual violence
with former British Foreign Secretary William Hague in 2012.

New Zealand Judge To Head

UK Child Sex Abuse Probe

BRITAINS government last month

appointed a judge from New Zealand to
lead a wide-ranging inquiry into alleged
child sex abuse by powerful figures in
British society.
The probe, announced in July, aimed to
find out whether British public agencies
including the BBC, churches and political
parties had neglected or covered up allegations of child sex abuse from the 1970s
to protect politicians and others in power.
But the inquiry has been plagued by
controversy from the start, with two previous chairwomen quitting over perceived
conflicts of interest.

New Study Says UK

Muslim Population
Increases Sharply
A NEW STUDY says the Muslim
population of England and Wales
almost doubled over a 10-year period.
The analysis of 2011 census data
indicates the number of people identifying themselves as Muslim grew
from 1.5 million in 2001 to 2.7 million
by 2011.
The study based on official data
was prepared for the Muslim Council
of Britain by a team led by Sundas Ali
of the University of Oxford.
The British Muslims in Numbers
report indicates that more than half
were born outside Britain but 73
percent regard themselves as British.
The report indicates nearly half
the Muslim population lives in neighborhoods considered among the top
10 percent in terms of economic
deprivation.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg
said last month the report highlights
the challenges and opportunities facing British Muslims.

lawmakers that New Zealand High Court

judge Lowell Goddard has been selected
after a search that involved more than 150
candidates for the position.
May said she was more determined
than ever to expose people and institutions who had failed abuse victims. The
inquiry would have the full co-operation
of government and access to all relevant
information, including secret information
where appropriate, she said.
PROTECTION
Child protection and the handling of
past child sex abuse has dominated British
headlines since revelations emerged that
well-known figures, including late BBC

entertainer Jimmy Savile, used their positions to get away with abuse for decades.
Police, social services and local government officials have also been accused
of inaction amid investigations into the
exploitation and sexual abuse of young
girls by gangs of older men in several
British cities.
An official report strongly criticized authorities in the English city of Rotherham,
where it emerged last year that at least
1,400 children had been subject to rape,
violence and trafficking by gangs of men
between 1997 and 2013.
The cabinet leading the citys local
government announced that it would step
down following the new report.

Singer Gary Glitter Convicted Of Sex Crimes

A JURY in Britain last month found former glam rock singer Gary Glitter guilty
of a string of sex abuse offenses against
three young girls in the 1970s.
The 70-year-old Glitter, whose real
name is Paul Gadd, was found guilty of
one count of attempted rape, four counts
of indecent assault, and one count of sexual
intercourse with a girl under the age of 13.
Paul Gadd has shown himself to be a
habitual sexual predator who took advantage of the star status afforded to him by
targeting young girls who trusted him and
were in awe of his fame, Detective Chief
Inspector Michael Orchard said. His lack
of remorse and defense that the victims
were lying makes his crimes all the more
indefensible.
Glitter was convicted by a jury of five
men and seven women at a London court
after a two-week trial. He blew kisses to a
public gallery full of reporters as he was
remanded in custody.
He will be sentenced later in February.
The maximum sentence for unlawful sex
with a minor is life imprisonment.
The singer was arrested in October 2012
under Operation Yewtree, the national
investigation that police launched in the
wake of a child abuse scandal surrounding

the late BBC entertainer Jimmy Savile.

Glitter fell into disgrace after being
convicted and imprisoned on child abuse
charges in Vietnam.

BRITAIN summoned Russias ambassador last month and asked him to explain
why Russian warplanes flew near British
airspace, disrupting civil aviation.
The Foreign Office said last month
that Royal Air Force Typhoon jets were
scrambled to escort Russian Bear bombers
in a UK area of interest. The Russian
planes did not enter British airspace, but
flew along the coast and over the English
Channel without communicating with
British air traffic control.
The Foreign Office called the maneuvers part of an increasing pattern of outof-area operations by Russian aircraft and
said the ambassador had been summoned
to account for the incident.
Tensions between Russia and NATO
nations have been high amid fighting between Ukrainian government troops and
Russia-backed rebels in eastern Ukraine.
NATO said its pilots conducted more
than three times as many intercepts of
Russian planes in 2014 as the year before.
Britains Ministry of Defense said it
intercepts Russian planes about once a
month.

I HAD TO weigh in on the current outrage

on both sides of the pond against Cadburys changing the chocolate used on
our beloved Crme Eggs.
The genesis of the crme egg was
hatched in 1963, to be later adapted by master chocolatier Robin Whitefield in the 80s
when the Cadburys Crme Egg became that
Easter treat we have loyally loved ever since.
The Hershey tampering with our chocolate was something I thought we had avoided
when Hersheys, American chocolate makers, had been outbid by Kraft in an attempt
to buy Cadburys, Pride of England. So in
my column February 2010 my joyful lead
item was:
We Brits just dodged a chocolate bullet
Among Englands top creations ever are the
E-type Jag and Cadburys Flake. So heres
thrilling news which affects every expat in
America. After two years of wrangling, bids
and counterbids to acquire Cadburys,
Hersheys USA has bowed out. I track UKUSA trade closely for my business and had
been dreading a likely Hershey takeover.
For years, Hersheys in Pennsylvania have
made fake Cadburys chocolate items
here under licence. Newly arrived expats
buy the soapy substitute in their local
supermarket, excited to spot the distinctive
purple and gold Cadburys wrapper. Then
their British tastebuds discern its nothing
like the original. Had Hersheys purchased
Cadburys UK, they might have tampered
with the recipe for the iconic Flake. Created
in 1920, even Winston Churchill munched
flakes down in his War Room. Thats why
we trounced Hitler, of course. Now another
American conglomerate, Kraft, is still bidding, but we can relax. Kraft have given a
statement to UK business media shrewdly
vowing not to change Cadburys intrinsic
products. THEY LIED
n TO MY MANY WELSH AND IRISH
readers in Florida, the real ones with accents and UK passports: Good wishes for

St Davids Day March 1 and St Patricks

Day March 17. (St Patrick was of course
English but no matter!) Herewith my annual Welsh funny for all terrific Taffies: Two
Americans were driving through Wales.
As they were approaching the town of
Lllanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch they started arguing
about the pronunciation of its name. They
argued back and forth until stopping at a
restaurant. To settle matters, Troy the Texan
asked the Welsh waitress: Before we order,
could you please settle an argument for us
foreigners? Please pronounce where we
are, very, very slowly. She leaned in and
said: Maaaaac---Donnnnn---alds
n THE BRITISH CONSUL GENERAL in
Miami has asked me to circulate this: VOTING IN THE MAY 2015 GENERAL ELECTION
from overseas: Did you know this is the first
UK General Election where people can register to vote online? DEADLINE TO APPLY is
Monday, April 20, 2015 but register as far
in advance of this as you can. The Electoral
Commission hopes that this new online
process will encourage more UK nationals
living overseas to take part in elections from
overseas. Estimates show that there may be
as many as 5.5 million UK nationals living
overseas, but there are fewer than 20,000
currently on the electoral registers. UK
residents overseas must have previously
been registered in a UK constituency within
the last fifteen years. WHAT YOU DO: Go

n ENGLISH LANGUAGE corner, or in
America I call it MANGLIGE: 1) Why do
even university-educated Americans say
It was so fun? It would be such fun for
me if they didnt. 2) We have a worldfamous hotel in Miami Beach called the
Fontainebleau. It is named after the historic
gem near Paris pronounced Fon-ten-blow.
Because so many major events happen in
the hotel, it is mentioned often on TV and
in conversations. To hear every American
around me mispronounce it as Fountainbloo is a never-ending irritant. Of course,
French-speaker moi sticks pointedly to the
right pronunciation, so gets corrected by
Americans! Grrrr.

EEs current owners, Deutsche Telekom

a small cash payment, while Orange will
receive a four percent stake and 3.4bn in
cash. Deutsche Telekom will also gain a
seat on BTs board.
The deal needs the approval of shareholders and the UK Competition and
Markets Authority.

UK Investigating How Passenger

Landed In UK Without Passport

BRITAINS Home Office is investigating how a passenger was allowed to board a flight
from Spain to Britain last month without a passport.
Officials said the passenger was questioned by Border Force agents at Liverpool John
Lennon Airport after he landed there on a flight from the Canary Islands.
The statement said the passenger was allowed to enter Britain after agents carried
out identity checks and established that he was a British national who previously held
a valid passport.
It said it was the airlines responsibility to make sure each passenger has proper
documents.
The Daily Mail newspaper said the passenger used a photocopy of a bus pass to board
the Ryanair flight after his passport was stolen.
Ryanair said in a statement it has a duty to repatriate nationals on their return flight
to their home country.
If a passport is lost or stolen, we ask that an alternative, or a copy of, photo ID is
provided in order to verify the passport details the customer provided at the time of
check-in, it said.

OBITUARIES

Churchills Biographer, Martin Gilbert, 78

MARTIN GILBERT, Winston

Churchills official biographer and a
leading historian of the Holocaust, has died
following a lengthy illness.
Gilbert died last month, senior civil
servant John Chilcot told a British parliamentary committee. Gilbert was a
member of Chilcots panel conducting an

official investigation into Britains role in

the Iraq war.
Educated at Oxford University, Gilbert
wrote more than 80 books, including many
with themes related to World War II. He
is best known for his works on Churchill,
which began when he worked with the
prime ministers son, Randolph Churchill,

Jane Hill

RIP Robert McMahon

LONG-TIME readers of
UJ will remember, during
our first 11 years of publication, one of our finest
writers, and friend Robert
McMahon, aka: The Flying
Scotsman entertained and
educated us each month.
It is with great sadness
this month that we write
of Roberts death. He was
70, and no doubt had many
more wonderful years
ahead until being gripped
by cancer over the last nine months.
Robert was born in Edinburgh, but
travelled the world while living in South
Africa (where he hitchhiked across wearing his kilt) and Canada, finally settling in
San Diego, California in 1976. He was a
citizen of three countries, and could carry
the title, Citizen of the World.
Robert worked as a computer pro-

on an official biography.
He continued for 20 years after Randolph
Churchill died in 1968, completing an
eight-volume biography and writing several
other books about the statesman, including
Churchill: A Life; Churchill: The Power
of Words, and Continue to Pester, Nag, and
Bite: Churchills War Leadership.

grammer for the Canadian

government, a major California airline, and later in
the field of banking.
Robert was a serious
reader, with a love of books
and history his favourite poet being . . . Robert
Burns!. He had a mind for
maths, sports writing, and
a love for football (especially Rangers). And, as we
discovered at UJ, Robert
could cover any subject,
from humour to politics, from religion
to history, all with equal ease, and with a
compelling style.
Robert leaves behind three adult children, Jamie, Vanessa , Matthew; and his
grandson Callum. Robert will be dearly
missed by his loving wife Marcia, and his
many friends around the world, not least
in San Diego.

WE ALSO received the news last month of

the sudden death of another former UJ columnist. Jane Hill was our first Coronation Street
writer back in the 1990s and 2000s. During a
few conversations Jane asked could we place
a PenPal ad in UJ Classads. For this she was
for ever grateful, and evidence of her effect
on others came when Richard Crandon, a UJ
reader of Minneapolis sent this to our offices:
To me, Jane was like my mum since my own
mum had died many years ago. Janes kindness to me was cherished. We would write
handwritten letters to each other each week
or two weeks, and she would send me some
bits or bobs from home that made me feel less
an alien here in the States and more British.
I will miss Jane terribly, as will all the
friends she made from your advert here.
Jane ran her own market stall in Leicester,
and through her contacts came by old post
cards, because of this we at UJ have a pretty
decent collection of picture post cards from
our hometown dating back to the early 1900s.
RIP Jane.

US, France And UK Close

Embassies In Yemen Amid Turmoil

THE UNITED STATES, Britain and

France said last month they were closing their embassies in Yemen amid the
turmoil in the wake of the Shiite rebels
takeover of the country.
The closures almost four years to the
date since the start of an Arab Spring
uprising that ousted Yemens longtime
autocratic ruler were an ominous sign
for the faltering, UN-brokered negotiations between the Houthi rebels and their
political rivals, They also threatened to
plunge this impoverished Arabian Peninsula country further into international
isolation.
Yemen has been in crisis for months,
with the Iran-linked Houthis besieging the capital, Sanaa, and then taking

control. In January, the rebels put USbacked President Abed Rabbo Mansour
Hadi and all his Cabinet ministers under
house arrest, leading to their resignations. Subsequently, the Houthis who
are followers of the Shiite Zaydi sect in
the Sunni-majority Yemen dissolved
parliament and declared they were taking over the government.
The State Department announced it
suspended operations at the US Embassy
in Sanaa and relocated remaining diplomatic personnel due to the ongoing
political instability and the uncertain
security situation. The embassy had
been operating with only a skeleton
staff for some weeks amid deteriorating
conditions.

Scotland huffed and puffed and scored the

think again about how to turn opportunities
into points.
RR ROUND TWO

England And
Ireland Set Early
Pace In Six Nations
RR ROUND ONE

Wales 16 England 21
Italy 3 Ireland 26
France 15 Scotland 8
THE FIRST weekend of the Six Nations
Championship produced one huge surprise.
England went to the Millennium Stadium in
Cardiff where they had been mangled 3-30
two years ago and pulled off a thoroughlydeserved and famous victory. What made the
win so impressive was the long list of injuries
that Stuart Lancasters men was carrying.
Their success was built on a massive effort
by the scrum after half-time, culminating
in Jonathan Josephs powerful surging try.
The nations will meet in the early stages of
the World Cup in September so this result is
a great morale-booster for England.
Elsewhere on the first weekend, Italy provided some dogged resistance to the current
Six Nations champions but Irish strength
and skill eventually told. Ireland put over a
couple of tries but it was the kicking of Ian
Keatley with 14 points that made it such an
emphatic victory.

England 47 Italy 17
Ireland 18 France 11
Scotland 23 Wales 26
ENGLAND were expected to beat Italy comprehensively since they have never lost to
the Azzurri. They scored six tries including a
brace from the brilliant Jonathan Joseph in
the centre. Danny Cipriani featured as a late
sub scoring a try with his second touch of the
ball to huge acclamation. Still, England will
look back a little concerned at having given
away a couple of soft tries to Italy.
Ireland enjoyed having Jonny Sexton back
in the fold after injury and owed this victory
to his five penalty goals. The French conjured
up the games only try. It was a messy but
invaluable Irish win.
Only three sides have ever won consecutive championships and the last time Ireland
did it was in 1949. This side looks good but
not that good.
Wales keep beating Scotland; this was
for the eighth time in a row. Almost predictably, Scotland made more scoring chances
despite the fact that Wales had far more
possession. Each side ran in two tries in
what was the most exciting of the Round
Two games but Scotland simply must start
taking their chances.
Once again Scotland are left looking up
the table having to beat Italy to avoid the
wooden spoon. Englands strength in depth
have ensured that they remain on course to
take this years title. Wales and France seem
stuck mid-table. The great Welsh feats of

recent years seem beyond them now while

the French have not yet decided which is
their best side.
It will all come down to the final round
when England host France and Scotland welcome Ireland. For a change there is unlikely
to be a title decider.

Premier League Live TV

Rights Deals Jump To $7.8bn

Silverstone Steps In As
British MotoGP Host

THE ENGLISH Premier League underlined its status as the worlds richest soccer
league February 10 by completing threeyear domestic television rights deals worth
more than $8bn a 70 percent increase
over the previous contracts.
Sky and BT agreed to pay 5.136bn to
continue showing games live in Britain
for three seasons covering the period from
2016-19. That follows the 204m deal
signed with the BBC last month for rights
to league highlights.
The 70 percent jump in the cost of live
matches replicates the surge when the last
deals with Sky and BT were secured in
2012, and should increase the financial
gulf between the English topflight and
rival leagues.
It will make our clubs even more
competitive against our European counterparts, which has got to be good for us,
Premier League chief executive Richard
Scudamore said.
Under the new deal, Rupert Murdochs
Sky will pay4.18bn to broadcast 126
games live each season, 10 more matches
than in the current 2013-16 deal, and
representing an 83 percent increase in the
rights fee.
CERTAINTY
BT was awarded the other 42 live games
of the 168 on offer, for which they will pay
960m over the three seasons.

THE BRITISH MotoGP will be staged at

Silverstone this year and next year after
Donington Park pulled out of hosting the
races because of financial problems.
Silverstone was the venue for the MotoGP from 2010-14, and also hosts grand
prix races in Formula One.
The Circuit of Wales signed a five-year
deal to stage the race from 2015. Delays
in the venue being built meant Donington
Park stepped in as a replacement, but its
operational plans were delayed because
the Circuit of Wales was unable to make
payments.
Michael Carrick, chief executive of
the Circuit of Wales, says in a statement
we are delighted to secure the future of
the event for the next two years while our
circuit in Wales is under construction.

RR By Rob Harris

The league has yet to open the bidding

for foreign broadcasters, which can show
all 380 games each season live.
This outcome provides a degree of
certainty so clubs can continue to invest
and run themselves in a sustainable manner, Scudamore said. It also allows us to
start planning how the Premier League can
continue to support the rest of the football
pyramid from the grassroots upwards.
Sky has held most of the domestic
rights since the Premier Leagues inception in 1992, helping Murdochs operation
become the dominant pay TV broadcaster
in Britain.
The company will work hard to minimize the impact of higher rights costs on
customers, with the majority of the funding
coming through substantial additional savings to be delivered by efficiency plans,
Sky said in a statement.
ECLIPSED
While the Premier League deals are
the biggest in domestic football, they are
eclipsed by the NFL in the United States.
The NFLs current TV contracts bring in
about $7bn a year through 2022.
Scudamore, addressing the issue of
increased ticket prices, said the leagues
priority is to sell out matches.
I am sure the flexible ticketing policies
that have helped keep attendances so high
will continue to develop, he said.

Murray Reaches Fourth

Aussie Final

ANDY MURRAY produced some wonderful

tennis as he moved past Grigor Dimitrov
and then Tomas Berdych in the semi-finals
of the Australian Open, where old rival Novak
Djokovic was waiting for him in the Melbourne final, February 1. Murray understood
he had a job to do having lost his last four
encounters with the Serbian, and for the first
two sets and the start of the third, things
looked pretty even. Djokovic had a thumb that
need attention and during that break Murrays
temperament tightened and the distraction
proved fatal. The Serb would go on to win
his fifth Australian Grand Slam with a 7-6
(7-5), 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-0 result. It was the
Scots fourth consecutive appearance in the
Australian Open final, and he is still waiting
for success.
Maria Sharapova had not beaten Serena
Williams in 14 years, and things did not
change in the womens final as the American
captured her fifth Aussie crown and 19th
Grand Slam title after a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win.
Another notable on the podium, was 34-yearold five time Grand Slam winner Martina
Hingis, who came out of retirement to win
the mixed doubles with partner Leander
Paes of India. There was a British victory
to celebrate however. Jordanne Riley and
Japanese partner Yui Kamiji, beat the Dutch
pair of Jiske Griffioen and Aniek van Koot,
4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to win their fifth consecutive
Grand Slam Womens Wheelchair Doubles
crown. Bristol born Katie Swan, who now
lives in Wichita, Kansas, reached the junior
singles final, where an injury thwarted her
attempt against Tereza Mihalikova. The
Slovakian won 6-1, 6-4.
Non-playing captain Judy Murray, led
Britain in the Federation Cup qualifiers in Budapest. The team featured Heather Watson,
and Johanna Konta, playing the singles and
Anna Smith and Joceylyn Rae the doubles.
They beat Liechtenstein 3-0, but lost to
Turkey 2-1, but beat Ukraine 2-1, for a place
in the play-offs. Unfortunately, both Watson
and Jonta lost both singles to Belarus, and
Britain made its exit Andy Murray returned
to the fray in the Netherlands, where he was
beaten in the quarter-finals of the ABN Amro
Tournament in Rotterdam by Gilles Simon
of France 6-4, 6-2. Hed earlier dispatched
Nicolas Mahut of France and Vasek Pospisil
of Canada.

World Cup Cricket

England reached the final of the triangular

tournament by beating India by three wickets
at Perth, a precursor to the World Cricket
Cup. India 200 all out at 48.1 overs. England
201-7 at close. In the final, also at Perth,
Australia won by 112 runs. Australia 278-8
at 50 overs. England 166 all out. Prior to the
big event England beat the West Indies by
nine wickets in Sydney. West Indies 122 all
out. England 125-1 at close. Pakistan beat
England in the final friendly, also at Sydney,
by four wickets. England 250-6 at 50 overs.
Pakistan 252-6 at close.
England featured in the opening match
of the 11th World Cricket Cup in Melbourne,
February 14, but it was a disastrous start
for the English facing hosts and old rivals
Australia. The Aussies bowlers ploughed
through Englands batting order, though
James Taylor defiantly attacked from the
crease with a 98 not out. Australia won by
111 runs. Australia 342 (Aaron Finch 136)-9
at 50 overs. England 231 all out. England are
in Pool A that includes round-robin matches
with Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand,
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Scotland.
Pool B has South Africa, India, Pakistan,
West Indies, Zimbabwe, Ireland and the
United Arab Emirates.
Scotland did not have a good start and
lost by three wickets to hosts New Zealand
at Dunedin. Scotland 142 all out. New Zealand
146-7 at close.
One of the early upsets, witnessed Ireland
beat the West Indies by four wickets as they
successfully chased a 305 run total that they
reached. West Indies 304 (Lendl Simmons
102)-7 at 50 overs. Ireland 307-6 at close.

American Cricket Struggles

The gathering of the top limited over nations for the World Cup, begets the question
about cricket in America, where the internet
site Cricinfo is regularly hit by thousands
and thousands of cricket fans this side

of the pond. Last year, the ICC relegated

Cricket USA to the World Cricket League
division four that includes such nations as
Denmark and Italy. While there is apparently
27 teams playing in Houston, Texas, and a
cricket stadium specially built in Broward
County, Florida, plus a big following in the
Los Angeles region. The controlling Statewide
cricket associations cannot agree however,
and have litigated against each other at times,
and are otherwise dysfunctional as a national
organization, that could be running the game
professionally. A nationwide league, plus a 50
over American tournament could be part of
the solution if the local administrators could
only get over their differences.

Golf: McIlroy Win In Dubai

A confident Rory McIIroy, with rounds of

66, 64 and 66, eased to victory at the Dubai
Dessert Classic that concluded February 1.
A 22 under par 266, gave him a three stroke
win over Swedens Alex Noren. This earned
McIIroy, his fourth victory in his last seven
tournaments. The following week, McIIroys
attorneys would tell a High Court judge in
Dublin, that an agreement had been reached
between the golfer and his former management company, Horizon Sports Management.
HSM had alleged breach of contract and outstanding fees, while McIIroy, had complained
about excessive charges. A figure of over
$20m payable by McIIroy, was mentioned
with both parties saying there would be no
further comment about the dispute...
Same weekend, Scotlands Martin Laird,
who has a residence in Arizona, was just
around the corner for the Waste Management Phoenix Open. He led the first three
rounds before a flurry of good, but late
finishing scores witnessed Brooks Koepka,
take the trophy with a 15 under 269. Laird
was three strokes distant. It was a nightmare
tournament for Tiger Woods with an 11 over
par 82 on the second round, and he did not
survive the cut. It was the worse round of
his professional career. Woods nonchalantly
concurred, We all have days like this. He
has aggravations off the fairways too, where
a final $45m payment to his ex-wife is due
the end of the year. The following week at the
Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, San
Diego, he was forced to withdraw after eleven
holes of the first round. Torrey Pines has been
the location of some notable Tiger victories,
but a back injury thwarted his chances this
time. Aussie Jason Day, took the podium
after beating three others in a play-off. Woods
has since announced an indefinite leave from
golf until his health and swing improve.
Northern Irelands Darren Clarke has
been chosen to captain Europes Ryder Cup
team, for the 2016 match due at Hazeltine in
the United States.

Sailing, Boxing, And Cycling

The Chinese sponsored Dongfeng Race

team, skippered by Frenchman Charles
Caudrelier won the third leg of the Volvo
Ocean Race, arriving in Sanya, Hainan Island,
from Abu Dhabi, after 23 days plus at sea.
They finished fifty nautical miles ahead of
the second yacht, the Abu Dhabi Racing
team. The fourth leg left China, February 8,
headed for Auckland, New Zealand Katie
Summerhayes won a slopestyle silver medal
at the World Freestyle Ski & Snowboard
Championships at Kreischberg, Austria.
Shes the first female Briton to medal at these
championships Isle of Man cyclist, Mark
Cavendish, won the four day Tour of Dubai,
February 7. The Etixx-QuickStep team rider
won the first and final stages, capturing the
title by just six seconds.

European Soccer; British

Clubs Keep Positive

The first leg of the Champions League final

sixteen knockout round saw Chelsea forge
a 1-1 draw at Paris St Germains. Branislav
Ivanovic put the Blues ahead in the 36th

minute, followed by an equalizer by Edinson

Cavani nine minutes after the break.
The last 32 knockout round of the Europa
League Cup, first legs, February 19, saw the
four British club remain undefeated. A Mario
Ballotelli penalty five minutes from time gave
Liverpool a 1-0 win over Besiktas of Turkey at
Anfield. Everton had John Stone red carded
at Berne, Switzerland, in 61st minute, but the
Toffees were already four up after a hat-trick
by Romelu Lukaku, against the BSC Young
Boys. Seamus Coleman scored too, as Everton won 4-1. A last minute netting by John
Guidetti, lit up Parklhead, as Celtic surged
back for a 3-3 result against Inter-Milan. Stuart Armstrong scored for the Hoops in 24th
minute after the Italians had gone ahead after
the 4th and 13th minutes. Then Campagnaro
found his own net as Celtic went 2-2. A goal
on half-time had Inter leading. At White Hart
Lane, Soldado put Tottenham ahead after
six minutes, but Fiorentina equalized nine
minutes before the break, and the 1-1 tie last
the whole ninety minutes

Cup Results

The final of the English Capital One League

Cup will put Chelsea and Tottenham head
to head, after the second leg matches last
month, decided the finalists. After a 1-1 tie
at Anfield,
Chelsea scored the only goal at Stamford
Bridge, through an extra-time netting by Branislav Ivanovic. Second divisions Sheffield
Utd run ended with a 2-2 result at Bramall
Lane, against Tottenham. Fighting a 1-0
deficit from the first leg, the Blades were felled
by a Christian Ericksen effort two minutes
from time which tied the match, and put the
Spurs through.
The fourth round FA Cup replays early
February provided few surprises. After a
momentous goalless home game with
Manchester Utd, Division Twos Cambridge
Utd journeyed to Old Trafford. Goals by Juan
Mata, Marco Rojo and James Wilson gave
Louis van Gaals outfit a 3-0 victory, though
the Reds rarely moved out of first gear.
Liverpool went to Championships Bolton,
where two late goals saw the Anfielders win
2-1, after earlier suffering a 1-1 home draw.
Sheffield Utds Cup run ended at home where
Preston won 3-1 and Sunderland won 3-1
at Craven Cottage in there replay against
Fulham.

Blackburn Slam Stoke, Black

Cats Ousted From FA Cup

The fifth round of the FA Cup, February 1416, saw Championships Blackburn Rovers
oust premier side Stoke City at Ewood Park
to the tune of 4-1. Stokes Geoff Cameron
got a red card on halftime that aided Rovers
to one the rounds biggest surprise as Josh
King nailed a hat-trick. The other gigantic
upset was at Valley Parade, where high-flying
Division One Bradford City, who knocked out
Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the last round,
pulled a 2-0 victory over premier leagues
Sunderland. The crowd of 24,000 plus was
the Bantams largest home gathering in fifty
years, who witnessed the Black Cats John
OShea deflect a shot in to his own net after
just three minutes. Jon Stead made it two
in the 61st minute, leading to a tumultuous
celebration. West Bromwich Albion had their
wheels turning nicely with a 4-0 win over
West Ham at the Hawthorns. Five premier
league sides made the eight team quarterfinals. Manchester United beat Preston
3-1 at Deepdale, where a controversy over
a Wayne Rooney penalty became media
fodder. Liverpool, Arsenal, Aston Villa and
West Bromwich Albion made it through.

Daniels scored for the Dons. A 50,000 plus

crowd filled Hampden Park in the other semifinal, as Celtic and Rangers met for the first
time in over three years. A header by Leigh
Griffiths, after ten minutes, and another on
the half-hour by Kris Commons, put the
hoops in the driving seat. A Rangers revival
in the second half did not occur, but they did
keep the Parkhead strikers out. Result: Celtic
2 Rangers 0.
The fifth round of the Scottish Cup, February 7-8, witnessed Cup-holders St Johnstone
ousted away from home by Championships
Queen of the South. Goals by Derek Lyle
and Gavin Reilly gave the South a 2-0 victory. Celtic progressed to the quarter-finals
with a 2-0 win at Dundee. Leigh Griffiths
hit the mark in the seventh minute, while
Stefan Johansen netted just after the break.
Trauma at the Ibrox Stadium, where Rangers
never got going in front of a crowd of barely
11,000, and went down 2-1 to Raith Rovers.
Ryan Conroy put the visitors ahead in the
54th minute then Haris Vuckic leveled seven
minutes later.
Christian Nade got the winner fifteen
minutes from the whistle. It the first win at the
Ibrox Stadium for Raith Rovers since 1959.
The last remaining junior side, Spartans FC of
the Lowland League, held Berwick Rangers
1-1 at home, but lost the replay by the only
goal of the match when Darren Lavery netted
for the Division Two side.

Socceroos Triumph, Ivory

Coast Too

Australia played host to the 2015 Asian

Cup, where sixteen nations qualified for
the final rounds of competition. In the final,
January 31, at Sydney, Australia prevailed
2-1 over South Korea, where a James Troisi
netting in extra-time gave the Socceroos their
first Asian Cup victory. The Koreans had beat
the Aussies 1-0 in a qualifying group game,
and during the first half of the final, there
rising confidence was evident. !6 nations
competed in the final play-offs.
The Ivory Coast won the African N ations
Cup at the Estadio de Bata, Equatorial Guinea,
where 120 minutes of soccer did not produce
one goal. An incredible nail biting penalty
shootout saw Les Elephants collect the glory
with a 9-8 penalty decider over Ghana, February 8. The Confederation of African Football
called the tournament a miraculous success,
but it was notable for some hefty fines and
reprimands. Morocco, the original chosen
hosts, who reneged because of the nearby
ebola epidemic was banned from the next
two African Cups, fined $1m and ordered to
pay $5.9m in compensation. Hosts Equatorial Guinea were fined $100,000 for a riot
in the semi-finals, Tunisian president Wadie
Jade, was banned from CAF after refusing to
apologise after a defeat, and a Mauritanian
referee who ordered a dubious penalty during
injury time was removed from the top list of
CAF officials.
The womens international between England and the USA at Milton Keynes, February
13, witnessed an Alex Morgan goal in the 25th
minute give the Americans the only goal of
the game. England looked to level it in 56th
minute, but were denied by the ref as off-side,
while a TV replay of the incident showed it to
be a perfectly good goal. The game, a warmup to the approaching Womens World Cup
in Canada, had the USA women coming off
a 2-0 defeat in France.

American Soccer

Jurgen Klinsmann took his US national

side, minus his European stars, down to
Chile, late January. Brek Shea and Jozy
Altidore had the Americans 2-1 up after 31
minutes, but the Chileans struck back in the
66th and 75th minutes to win 3-2. At Carson,
California, February 8, goals by Michael
Bradley, who scored directly off a corner
and Clint Dempsey, gave the US a 2-0 win
over Panama. Klinsmann agreed the MLS

off-season did not have his players as fit as

he would have wanted.
Are the Miami-Dade Commissioners
handing an olive branch to David Beckham
in his quest for a Miami MLS franchise? The
Commision gave unanimous permission for
Mayor Carlos Gimenez, to approach Florida
International University for a temporary stadium (capacity 23,500) sharing deal that may
persuade Beckham back to southern Florida.
Beckhams investment partners include Bolivian telecommunications entrepreneur Marcelo Claure, and British impressario Simon
Fuller, but Miamis refusal on two prime sea
front locations has severely dampened the
groups enthusiasm. MLS Commissioner Don
Garber said last December If we dont have
the right stadium, were not going to Miami.
Miami Beckham Uniteds local rep, real estate
attorney John Aschuler, says the search for
a good location continues. It been one year
since Beckham blitzed the City with a giant
PR campaign, where he shook hands amidst
a media extravaganza with local politicians
and community leaders. The MLS recently
discounted Las Vegas as a future franchise.

Late Cricket, Etc

England once again failed to ignite in

the second game of qualifying at the World
Cricket Cup, losing to New Zealand by
eight wickets at Wellington, February 20.
Englands batsmen paid the price for a
miserable performance. England 123 all
out. New Zealand 125-2 at close. They did
get a win finally at Christchurch, February
23, with a 119 run victory over Scotland.
England 303 (Ali Moeen 128)-8 at 50 overs.
Scotland 184 all out The World Cycling
Track Championships in Paris, France, February 20-22, saw the British squad come
away without a gold medal for the first time
since 2001. There were three silver medals
however. The mens and womens pursuit
team got one apiece. The mens team of Ed
Clancy, Steven Burke, Andy Tennant and
Owain Doull, were beaten by New Zealand
in the final. The womens team of Katie
Archibald, Elinor Burke, Laura Trott and
Joana Rowsell, were beaten in their final by
the Australians, while Laura Trott would win
another silver, this time in the Omnium

Yarnold Wins European

Skeleton Title

Lizzy Yarnold of Britain won her second

skeleton World Cup race in as many days
to become European champion last month.
In difficult conditions due to snowfall, the
Olympic champion posted the fastest time in
both runs to defeat the defending European
champion, Janine Flock of Austria, by 0.30
seconds. Rose McGrandle of Britain came
0.39 behind in third.
It doesnt matter whether I won Olympic
gold or not, I am just trying to become a
better athlete, Yarnold said. Its been awesome support here. I have to thank my mom
and dad for coming to watch all the way
from the UK.
Yarnold became the first European champion from Britain since Shelley Rudman won
her second title in Winterberg, Germany, four
year ago.

By Ridge Mahoney
Arsenal: Santi Cazorlas early
penalty kick and Olivier Girouds
penalty kick in first-half stoppage
time earned the Gunners a 2-1 at
Crystal Palace. Mesut Ozil played vital roles
in both goals as Arsenal dispatched Leicester
City, 2-1. Laurent Koscielny headed home
Ozils corner kick to open the scoring and
shortly before halftime Theo Walcott followed
up a saved Ozil shot to bang in the winner.
Aston Villa: A 2-1 loss to Stoke
City tainted Tim Sherwoods debut
as club manager. He saw his team
strike first with a Scott Sinclair goal in
the 20th minute only to lose to a penalty kick
awarded in stoppage time when Ron Vlaar
dragged down an opponent and was sent
off. The defeat extended Villas winless skid
to 11 games. A goal by Jores Okore against
Chelsea ended a goal drought of 659 minutes,
the fourth-longest streak in Premier League
history, but still Villa lost, 2-1, and soon after
Sherwood replaced Paul Lambert.
Burnley: A bruising encounter
at Stamford Bridge ended 1-1 even
though the Clarets played with a
man advantage for the final 20
minutes. Ben Mees header from Kieran Trippiers corner kick in the 81st minute earned the
point. Danny Ings headed his fifth goal in his
last six league games to bring Burnley level
with Manchester United but after he narrowly
missed a chance to put them ahead United
took command en route to a 3-1 triumph.
Chelsea: Two penalty-kick appeals were turned down and the
sending-off of Nemanja Matic in
the 70th minute opened the door
for Burnley to score the goal that yielded
a 1-1 tie. Eden Hazards run and cutback
set up Branislav Ivanovics strike in the 14th
minute. A brilliant save by Thibaut Courtois
10 minutes after the dismissal produced the
corner kick from which Burnley equalized.
Juan Cuadrado made his first Chelsea start
in a 1-0 defeat of Everton that was in doubt
until Willian scored with a deflected shot in
the 89th minute.
Crystal Palace: Substitute
Glenn Murray, who entered the
match against Arsenal with the
Eagles down 2-0, nearly stole
a point. He scored with a closerange shot in the 94th minute and in the final
seconds of stoppage time nailed a diving
header against the goalpost. Frazier Campbell, another sub, scored in the 71st minute of
a 1-1 tie with Newcastle by which the Eagles
avoided a seventh straight home defeat.
Everton: Dire times for the
Toffees. A 2-2 tie with lowly
Leicester City was their fourth
straight league draw at Goodison
Park and left them with just three victories in
13 home matches. They needed a deflected
stoppage-time header from Romelu Lukaku
to get that point after they had squandered
a 1-0 lead provided by Steven Naismith. As
the home team in the 224th Merseyside derby
Everton managed just six shots (one on goal)
in a 0-0 draw.
Hull City: Dame NDoye
scored a last-minute goal on
his 30th birthday as Hull City
downed Queens Park Rangers,
2-1. Nikica Jelavic pounced on a defensive
mistake to push the Tigers in front and after

conceding the equalizer they pressed for

50 minutes to get the winner. The same
duo notched the goals in a 2-0 defeat of
Aston Villa that was NDoyes debut at the
KC Stadium.
Leicester City: The Foxes
conceded a last-minute goal at
Everton that produced a disappointing 2-2 draw. Goals by
David Nugent and Esteban Cambiasso had
wiped out a 1-0 deficit. Andrej Kramarics
first goal for the Foxes halved Arsenals
2-0 lead but they failed to net another and
tumbled, 2-1, to their fourth straight defeat.
Nugents header off the crossbar summed up
the Foxes luck in a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace;
they did more than enough to extract at least a
point but none of their 13 shots found the net.
Liverpool: A solid 2-0 win at
Southampton edged Pool closer
to a European spot. Phillipe
Coutinho crashed an incredible
shot from more than 30 yards off
the underside of the bar in the third minute,
and more than an hour of back-and-forth play
preceded Raheem Sterlings clincher. Mario
Balotellis first league goal for the club punctuated a dramatic 3-2 defeat of Tottenham.
He came on to replace Daniel Sturridge, who
set up Lazar Markovic for the opening goal
and earned a penalty kick tucked away by
Steven Gerrard.
Manchester City: David Silva
scored goals two minutes apart
early in the second half after three
teammates had already hit the net
as City stampeded Newcastle United, 5-0.
Sergio Aguero converted a penalty kick in
the second minute and Samir Nasri and Eden
Dzeko quickly added their goals to provide a
lusty followup to a 4-1 romp at Stoke City.
Another penalty kick by Aguero was his
second of the night; Nasri and James Milner
also scored as City broke out of a four-game
winless slump.
Manchester United: A 1-0
lead at Swansea City evaporated
within two minutes and by conceding a second goal in the final
stages United lost, 2-1. Ander Herrera cleared
a shot from the United goal line and at the
other end notched a goal in the 28th minute
that provided a brief lead. Summoned as a
sub in the early minutes because of an injury
to Phil Jones, Chris Smalling struck almost
immediately and scored again in first-half
stoppage time as United subdued Burnley,
3-1. Robin Van Persie salted away the victory from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute.
Newcastle United: The Magpies failed to hold onto leads in
back-to-back matches. Papiss
Cisse scored late in the first
half against Crystal Palace
with a header from Daryl Janmaats cross
from the right wing three minutes before the
interval, but the match ended 1-1, as did a
home match against Stoke City. Jack Colback
broke a scoreless deadlock in the 74th minute
but the Magpies conceded an equalizer in the
final minute of regular time.
Queens Park Rangers: QPR
captain Joey Barton was shown a
red card in a 2-1 loss to Hull City
in which the Tigers rallied from a
goal down only to be beaten right
at the end. They already trailed by a goal when
Barton exited, yet Charlie Austin defied the
man disadvantage by directing a Matt Phillips

alternative role with the team.
Pearce, who played for Forest from 198597 and enjoys cult status at the City Ground,
had guided the team to the top of the secondtier League Championship early this season.
Six losses in the last seven games, however, saw Forest drop to 12th place 13
points off the playoff spots.
Forest, a two-time European champion,
was last in the Premier League in 1999.

Chelsea, Everton Charged

For Melee During EPL Game

CHELSEA and Everton have been charged

by Englands Football Association for a
melee involving both teams during a Premier
League match.
The incident was sparked by a foul by
Everton midfielder Gareth Barry on Chelsea
winger Willian in the 86th minute of the match
at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea won 1-0.
The FA said the clubs have been charged
for failing to ensure their players conducted
themselves in an orderly fashion and/or
refrained from provocative behavior.

ASTON VILLA hired Tim Sherwood as its new

manager February 14, three days after firing
Paul Lambert with the club in the relegation
zone in the English Premier League.
Sherwood, who lasted just five months at
Tottenham last season in his first management job, signed a contract through the end
of the 2017-18 season.
While being forever conscious of the frustrations that we all suffer, Villas American
owner, Randy Lerner, said, we feel that a
change that offers a positive, fresh approach
will be very good for the club.
Villa described the 46-year-old Sherwood
as one of English footballs most highly
sought-after managers, and the Englishman
had been linked with a host of clubs since
leaving Spurs in May.
It is a great honor to manage one of the
biggest clubs in English football, Sherwood
said.
Villa had dropped into the leagues bottom
three last month. Lambert was sacked less
than 24 hours later.

FIFA Announce Qatar World

Cup Christmas

THE WORLD CUP in Qatar keeps provoking

cross into the net. In his senior debut Darnell

Furlong, 19, nearly scored but a superb save
thwarted him. Rangers secured their first
away win of the season and ended a run of
11 consecutive Barclays Premier League
defeats on the road by beating Sunderland,
2-1. Leroy Fer got the first goal and Bobby
Zamora, replacing an injured Austin, cashed
in a fine feed from Phillips.
Southampton: Saido Mane
turned in the penalty area to score
a winner in the third minute of
stoppage time by which Saints
won, 1-0, at Queens Park Rangers. Fraser
Fosters great save late in regular time had
kept the game scoreless. Despite an astounding 14-1 advantage in shots, Saints settled for
a 0-0 draw at home with West Ham.
Stoke City: Late goals earned the
Potters some crucial points. Victor
Moses converted a penalty kick in
the third minute of stoppage time
to bring them a 2-1 decision over Aston Villa
after theyd fallen behind in the 20th minute.
Mame Biram Diouf started the comeback
by heading home Stephen Irelands cross
just before halftime. USA international Geoff
Cameron, an injury substitution for Marc
Wilson, supplied the cross from which Peter
Crouch nailed a far-post header to knot up
Newcastle in the 90th minute.
Sunderland: Gus Poyets
appeal to fans for support
preceded a 0-0 draw with
West Bromwich Albion best described as labored. Adam Johnson scored
from close-range, but the goal was ruled
offside. The result left the Black Cats with
just one victory from their last nine league
fixtures and 13 goalless games on their
ledger. Jermain Defoe scored his first goal
for the club since a swap move from New
York Red Bulls in a 1-1 tie at Swansea City.
Swansea City: Jonjo Shelvey
set up both goals one of them
intentionally as the Swans rallied
to beat Manchester United, 2-1.
His cross set up Ki Sung-yueng to score the
tying goal and late in the match he unleashed
a fierce drive that ricocheted into the net off
the head of Bafetimbi Gomis. Swansea has
won three of the last four matches against
United by that same scoreline. Ki Sung-yueng
scored against his former club as the Swans
rallied to tie Sunderland, 1-1.
Tottenham Hotspur: Harry Kane
added several entries to his burgeoning reputation. His goal in the sixth
minute of stoppage time drew Spurs
level with West Ham, 2-2, after theyd
trailed, 2-0. Danny Roses goal in the 81st
minute brought Spurs back into the game.
Kane and Mousa Dembele scored in a seesaw game that finished 3-2 to Liverpool. Kane
etched his name forever into the lore of North
London derbies by scoring twice in an historic
2-1 defeat of Arsenal at White Hart Lane.
West Bromwich Albion: Brown
Ideye and Saido Berahino set up
each others goals in a 2-0 defeat of
Swansea City. Ideyes goal midway
through the second half capped a comeback
from a 2-0 deficit at Burnley. Chris Brunt
scored from a corner on the stroke of halftime
to spark the rally.
West Ham United: Goalkeeper
Adrian was sent off in a 0-0 draw
at Southampton. He handled outside the box in the 61st minute yet
replacement Jussi Jaaskelainen had little to do
as the 10 men held out for a point. The Hammers led Manchester United, 1-0, thanks to
Cheikhou Kouyates volley early in the second
half, but two minutes into stoppage time the
visitors got an equalizer.
outrage and breaking taboos.
Seven years before the 2022 tournament
kicks off in the wealthy emirate, FIFAs autonomous structure recommended a break
with soccer tradition on February 24 moving
its marquee tournament to November and
December instead of the usual June-July
time slot.
A FIFA task force meeting in Doha agreed
that playing in the cooler months at the end of
the year would protect players and fans from
40C (104F) heat in Qatars summer. But the
decision angered many in Europe because
highly profitable leagues will be shut down for
several weeks in the middle of their seasons.
We expect the clubs to be compensated
for the damage that a final decision would
cause, European Club Association chairman
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, a former Germany
great, said in a statement.
The EPFL, a group representing Europes
top leagues, said the World Cup will cause
great damage to domestic competitions
when slotted into the broader November
19-December 23 period suggested by FIFA.
But, this months final approval for the
switched dates seems to be a formality
from a FIFA executive committee chaired by
President Sepp Blatter, who has long insisted
November-December is the only realistic
option for the tournament.

Brooklands Racing Track

To Be Brought To Life With
Lottery Fund Investment

BUILT IN 1907, Brooklands motor racing circuit was the first purpose-built of
its kind before closing in 1939.
But, last month it was announced
that an investment of $7.2m from the
Heritage Lottery Fund will enable
the launch of the Brooklands Aircraft
Factory & Race Track Revival Project.
The renovation will bring parts of the
old racetrack back to life and see the
rebuilding of the main airport hangar,
part of the airfield and military production centre during the First World War.
Remains of the circuit are can still be
observed, but the 2.75-mile track has

largely fallen into disrepair. Although

only part of the track will be restored
enthusiasts are looking forward to seeing the return of a few cars screaming
around the historic banks.
Brooklands Museum director Alan
Winn said: This unique exhibition
coupled as it is with a new home for
our live aircraft, new workshops and
stores, and the restoration of the Finishing Straight of the Race Track to its
1939 appearance will give visitors of
all ages an unmatched immersive and
imaginative experience.

DARREN CLARKE
was selected last
month as the captain
of the European team
for the 2016 Ryder
Cup at Hazeltine after
receiving overwhelming support from key
players like Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter.
The European Tour announced its decision following a meeting of a five-man
selection panel, which included the last
three captains Colin Montgomerie, Jose
Maria Olazabal and Paul McGinley.
Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain and
Thomas Bjorn of Denmark were also
candidates for the role but Clarke was the
unanimous choice, Montgomerie said.
The top-ranked McIlroy and stalwarts of
the European team like Poulter, Justin Rose
and Graeme McDowell had given their backing to Clarke, who played on four winning
teams in the Ryder Cup from 1997-2006 and
was vice captain in 2010 and 2012.
HELPED
In 2006, Clarke helped Europe to a
record-equaling 18-9 victory over the
United States at The K Club, just six weeks
after his first wife, Heather, died.
The Ryder Cup has been a massive part
of my life and my career, so to have the
chance to lead Europe next year is a huge
honor, said Clarke, the first Northern Irishman to be given the captaincy. I am lucky
to have played and worked under some
fantastic captains in my seven Ryder Cups
to date, and I look forward to the challenge
of trying to follow in their footsteps.
The European team is defending the cup
after beating the US 16-11 at Gleneagles
in September. The Americans have won
the Ryder Cup only one time in the past
seven tries.

Scorer Smith Retires

KELLY SMITH, Englands record womens

goalscorer, has retired from international
football ahead of the World Cup.
The 36-year-old striker scored 46 times in
117 appearances for England, playing at the
2007 and 2011 World Cups as well as for
Britain at the 2012 London Olympics.
Smith has dropped down the England
pecking order so might have struggled to
make Mark Sampsons World Cup squad for
the tournament in Canada in June.
The Arsenal Ladies player said: I feel
exceptionally proud and honored to have
played for England for 20 wonderful years.

Spurs announced the deal last month.
The 21-year-old Kane has scored 20 goals
in all competitions in his breakthrough season
at Tottenham and has eight goals in 10 games
