Strategy Advanced Paraphrasing

If you havent yet mastered our basic paraphrasing patterns, then STOP. Do not proceed
further. Go back to the Basic Paraphrasing video and PDF pack and practice until you can
fluently use the basic patterns with simple nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

When you feel that you are ready and have practiced sufficiently, then proceed to follow the
instructions below.

How to Do Paraphrasing

In this download, in addition to the document you are now reading, there are three other PDF
files. Open the one called Paraphrasing Techniques - Adv first. Then, follow the instructions
below:

1. Familiarize yourself with the 5 types of advanced paraphrasing techniques. Make sure you
understand how they are used.

2. Open the PDF called Paraphrasing Word Lists Adv. In it you will see lists of nouns, verbs,
and adjectives in groups of ten. The words are all fairly easy. This is important for building
speed and confidence. You can practice with more difficult words when you get better.

3. Focus on nouns at first and start with List A. Choose the first word and use the basic
paraphrasing patterns to describe the word (as you did when you practiced with the basic
patterns). This time, however, try to use the 5 advanced techniques of substitution and
extension to make your meaning clearer. Speak out loud. Try to use 3 or more patterns each
time you paraphrase. You have to get good at using multiple patterns in rapid succession.

4. After you have practiced all 10 words in List A, stop and take a rest before moving onto List
B. This is important.

5. When you are feeling confident with the advanced paraphrasing techniques for nouns,
repeat the steps above with the patterns for verbs and adjectives.

6. Once you are confident in all 5 forms types of advanced paraphrasing techniques, then
open the PDF called Paraphrasing Cards Adv. Print it, cut out the cards, shuffle them, and
place them face down on the table. It is now time to start speed paraphrasing.

7. Turn over the top card and start paraphrasing all 10 words in rapid succession. Try to use at
least 3 paraphrasing patterns for each word. Give yourself a time limit that forces you to
paraphrase quickly. Start with 2 or 3 minutes. After practice, reduce the time limit to under 2
minutes. If you can paraphrase all 10 words in under 90 seconds, then you are doing great!

Remember, it is very important to practice paraphrasing with easy words. You must practice
with easy words to learn to use the patterns quickly and effortlessly. Then, you can easily use
the patterns with more difficult concepts, for which you dont have the proper vocabulary.
