Workshops and Training
Operation Orange
I was able to spend a day in the life of a medical student, participating in hands-on demonstrations
such as intubation, and learned what it was like to go to medical school.

Summer Pediatrics Internship

I shadowed Dr. Terence Carey, who completed his residency at the Mayo Graduate
School of Medicine in Pediatrics. Dr. Carey was very interactive and let me listen
to patient breathing sounds and make my own diagnosis. I saw patients with a
wide range of symptoms including: lupus, neurocysticercosis, and
tracheoesophageal fistula. The most interesting part of this experience was being
able to learn how to perform a newborn exam, which really interested me in
possibly becoming a pediatrician.
Summer Family Medicine Internship
I was able to shadow a family physician through OSU Dr. Pete's Student of the Day
Program. The physician I shadowed was Dr. Thompson, who had just completed
his residency. He was a very approachable mentor and I was able to see a wide
range of chronic diseases in low-income patients.
Summer Surgery Internship
I shadowed Dr. William Clark, an orthopedic spine surgeon, who was a very
eccentric person to learn from. I was able to observe him perform Spinal Fusion
procedures on two Kyphosis patients which were really fascinating! I was also able
to ask him about his experiences from medical school and how he reached where
he is today.
Summer Dermatology Internship
I shadowed my personal dermatologist Dr. Douglas Vaughn. Dr. Vaughn had
treated my father for acne when he was a young adult and I knew no one better
to treat me. I have had a very long lasting patient relationship with him and he
has given me support and encouragement to enter the medical field. While

shadowing Dr. Vaughn, I was able to observe the intricacies of running a private
practice and the close doctor-patient relationships unavailable at most large
hospitals.
Summer Hepatitis C Research Mentorship
I began this mentorship by sending a general email to all faculty asking for any opportunities in research. I got
in contact with a Dr. Rashmi Kaul, Associate Professor of Immunology at OSU, and began researching the
effects of microbiomes in Hepatitis C with her team. I learned gram staining, cell culturing, ImageJ, histology,
and gave a presentation to medical faculty on the Hepatitis C Virus. Our research, titled, Bacterial Colonization
and Differential Expression of Toll Like Receptor 4 in HCV-Related Cirrhosis and Hepatocellular Carcinoma,
and was presented at the Cancer Research Symposium 2015 i
Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM) Forensics, Femurs, and Frontiers Workshop
Experienced medical careers through hands-on-learning and presentations from doctors in the
Oklahoma City area, which gave me insight on the career of a Neurosurgeon which is the career I want
to pursue.

the desk, and stock the rooms with medical supplies.
