14 mm, ii) 18 mm, iii) 24 mm, iv) 27 mm, v) 38 mm
2) Calculate maximum edge distance for a connection having maximum
plate thickness of 10 mm
3) Calculate minimum and maximum pitch for a 16 mm diameter bolt.
Assume plate thickness 10mm
4) Calculate net effective cross-sectional area of 18 mm bolt.
5) Calculate design shear capacity of a 20 mm bolt in i) single shear and
ii) double shear
6) Calculate design bearing capacity of a 18 mm bolt for a plate
thickness of 12 mm.

gusset plate 8 mm thick consists of 6 bolts of 20 mm nominal
diameter in a single line. Calculate maximum factored force the
connection can resist based on shear and bearing.
Consider case the angles are connected back to back to the
gusset plate.
Consider angles connected to the same side of gusset plate

two plates. Determine the slip resistance of the connection for
a. Plates subjected to service load
b. Plates subjected to ultimate load.
Hence determine safe axial load that can be applied on the
plates.
9) For the problem below investigate the safety of slip critical joint for
30mm diameter bolt of grade 8.8. The gusset plate is 10mm thick.

10) The joint shown in fig has to carry a factored load of 180kN. End
plate used is of size 160 mm x 140 mm x 16 mm. The bolts used are
M20 HSFG of grade 8.8. Check whether the design is safe.
