CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Malcolm X once stated that Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to
those who prepare it today. Education plays a major role in the development of our nation.
Being educated is truly a prestige to everyone so if you are educated, it can boost your moral
standard as well your wellbeing. Parents have been considering education as one of the few
legacies to their child/ren. In our government they allotted budgets for the improvement of the
quality of education in our country. The main objective of education is to bring out the best in us
so we can be an asset in our nation. Learners should train how to make solutions to problems,
how to be independent and how to apply what they have learned inside the classrooms in their
real life situations. Learners like us should know that we cant learn by just simply manipulated
by others or by watching them, we should practice it frequently. A lot of us may have graduated
in a well known or high paid university or institute but the problem is, did all us succeeded after
we got our degree? The answer might be yes or somehow no. Why? A lot of us cant deny that
being a college student is really hard. Our time for our other stuffs is limited. We are all having a
hard time dealing with our schedules. We cant separate our time for our studies, friends, and
family and for ourselves. If we want to succeed in our field of study, we should formulate proper
time management. In that way, we can make a good study pattern that we can use and help us
survive with the obstacles of education, making us fully equipped with knowledge and skills that
we acquired. A good study habit can be our ally or enemy at the same time.
Nowadays, all of us are practicing different ways of study habits. A good study method is
absolutely helpful to all of us. A good study habit is not just memorizing what is written in the
paper but understanding it properly.

BACKROUND OF THE STUDY

In the era of globalization and innovation, we considered education as the first step for every
human activity. Through education, we can acquire enough knowledge and skills that enable us
to increase our productivity and improve our quality of life. Success as the name implies is
wished for everybody but it is not something that we can have in just a snap of your finger. One
must work for it through perseverance and hard work. Schools, colleges, universities and
institutes have no worth without students. These are built for the learners. The social and
economic development of a country is directly linked with student academic performance; the
desire of success is derived from individuals concept of himself and in term of the meaning of
various incentives as they spell success and failure in the eye of others.
It has been long recognized that in the process of learning the study habits of the student plays an
important role in their academic performance. Learning is reflected in the way a student respond
in environment, social, emotional and physical stimuli and understands new information. The
key to better learning and better academic performance in school are good teachers, good study
environment, parents cooperation, good quality books and most important is the study habit.
Study habits are necessary as they influence the academic performance of students so parents and
teachers must help in improving the study habits of the students.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
One of the Technological Institute of the Philippines missions is to transform students into
graduates with full competence in their field of study. The institute trains youths how to act and
grow as a young professional.
Through the vision and mission of TIP, this research aims to:

Give tips on how to make your study pattern more significant. Students surely want
to improve their study skills so the main objective of this paper is to help our fellow

students.
Analyze what are the dos and donts while you are in the midst of studying or
reviewing. While studying, a lot of us usually do some other stuff that can turn our
attention on other things. This leads to losing your interest on what you are studying or
reviewing. This paper contents different opinions and suggestions from the Dean Listers
of the Engineering program about study habits. We know that those suggestions can be

very useful so we came up with this kind of topic.

Provide basic information on how to make your study skills better.
Understand what are the common distractions that we need to avoid.

o CHAPTER II
RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
According to Frank Pogue (2000), president of Chicago State University, also conducted

a study to determine why students are failing. What he founds to be true in that study habits
survey was that more than 30 years ago still rings true today--students fail because they do not
know how to study. He said that a student should make sure that he/she has a good study
environment, a good desk, a sturdy chair, good light, comfortable room temperature and a quiet
atmosphere. That means distraction is not an option. A good overview of the assignment before
starting is also good in studying. Know what skills, facts and ideas that are expected to master
and the ground that are expected to cover. Start with most difficult subject first, while the mind
is freshest and most receptive. Fielden (2004) states that good study habits help the student in
critical reflection in skills outcomes such as selecting, analyzing, critiquing, and synthesizing.
Professors in the developing countries said that the undergraduate students should be fully equip
with high level of analytical skills, the capacity for critical reasoning, self-reflection and
conceptual grasp and ability to learn autonomously and exercise flexibility of mind
(Simmons2003). Study habits are said to be improving because of the advent and wide use of
the Internet, hypertext, and multimedia resources which greatly affects the Study Habits (Liu,
2005). Simmons (2002) notes that "good writing spawns from a close understanding of text and
great writing result from an interactive analysis and fluency with our reading." He adds that
inadequate writing is a direct result of inadequate reading and studying. Postgraduate students
are scholars in training and have the responsibility of becoming prolific and critical writers in

their disciplines and careers. The spirit of responsibility and integrity are vital to the study
habits of postgraduate students.
o Liu (2005) and Ramirez (2003) report that students print material from
the Internet in order to study and read later on. Igun (2005) also found that
Nigerians study from materials downloaded from the Internet. Reading is
an attempt to absorb the thought of the author and know what the author is
conveying (Leedy 1956). Studying is the interpretation of reading
materials. Study habits and skills are particularly important for college
students, whose needs include time management, note taking, Internet
skill, the elimination of distractions, and assigning a high priority to study.

o THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
o Martin Fords Motivational Systems Theory (MST) focuses on the
individual as the unit of analysis, but embeds the individual in the
biological, social, and environmental contexts that are crucial to
development. Ford proposed a simple mathematical formula that attempts

to represent all these factors in one model. The formula for effective
person-in-context functioning is:
o Achievement = (Motivation x Skill) x Responsive Environment
o The formula proposes that actual achievement and competence are the
results of a motivated, skillful, and biologically capable person interacting
with a responsive environment (Ford, 1992).
o Similar formula was used by Pinder (1984) and others (cited in Nonis &
Hudson, 2006) to demonstrate performance as a multiplicative function of
both ability and motivation.
o Performance = Ability x Motivation
o The above formula indicates that a student with very high ability but low
motivation is unlikely to perform well, whereas a student with low ability
but high motivation is likely to perform well. That is, the variability in
motivation across students may dampen associations between ability and
performance. In the same vein, one can argue that it is simply the study
habits and attitudes that ultimately bring about the desired performance
and not students inner desires or motivations. Therefore, similar to how
motivation interacts with ability to influence academic performance, one
can infer that study habits and attitudes interact with ability to influence

o CHAPTER III
o RESEARCH DESIGN
o In this research paper, quantitative approach was followed. Burns and
Grove (1993:777) define quantitative research as a formal, objective,
systematic process to describe and test relationships and examine cause
and effect interactions among variables. Surveys may be used for
descriptive, explanatory and exploratory research. A descriptive survey
design was used. A survey is used to collect original data for describing a
population too large to observe directly (Mouton 1996:232). A survey
obtains information from a sample of people by means of self-report, that
is, the people respond to a series of questions posed by the investigator
(Polit & Hungler 1993:148). In this study the information was collected
through self-administered questionnaires distributed personally to the
subjects by the researcher.
o A descriptive survey was selected because it provides an accurate
portrayal or account of the
o characteristics, for example, behavior, opinions, abilities, beliefs, and
knowledge of a particular individual, situation or group. This design was
chosen to meet the objectives of the study, namely to determine the
knowledge and views of patients and family members with regard to
diabetes mellitus and its treatment regimen (Burns & Grove 1993:29).

o SETTING/ SUBJECT OF THE STUDY
o This research is conducted at Technological Institute of the Philippines
branch at Quezon City. The institute has the population of around 12,000
students and the biggest portion of it is coming from the Engineering
students. The freshmen students are around 4,000 and the biggest portion
is also coming from the Engineering Department.
o Five Deans Listers Engineering students that are freshmen will be the
subject of this research paper. They will going to answer several questions
regarding their study habits.

o DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE
o Questionnaires were personally distributed by the researchers to selected
students. It will only take three to five minutes for them to fill it because
the questionnaire was only consists of several questions. The researchers
will select five respondents and they will make sure that while the
respondents are filling up the questionnaire, they didnt have an ongoing

class. This kind of data gathering procedure will not take too long. This is
the simplest form because our respondents are few as well as the
questions.

o RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
o A questionnaire was chosen as data collection instrument. A questionnaire
is a printed self-report form designed to elicit information that can be
obtained through the written responses of the subjects. The information
obtained through a questionnaire is similar to that obtained by an
interview, but the questions tend to have less depth (Burns & Grove
1993:368).
o Data was collected with the aid of questionnaires to evaluate the students
point of view about the effective study habit. Questionnaires were decided
upon because of the following:

They ensured a high response rate as the questionnaires were distributed to respondents

to complete and were collected personally by the researcher.

They required less time and energy to administer.

They offered the possibility of anonymity because subjects names were not required on

the completed questionnaires.

There was less opportunity for bias as they were presented in a consistent manner.
Most of the items in the questionnaires were closed, which made it easier to compare the
responses to each item.
o Apart from the advantages that have been listed above, questionnaires
have their weaknesses; for
o example, there is the question of validity and accuracy (Burns & Grove
1993:368). The subjects might not reflect their true opinions but might
answer what they think will please the researcher, and valuable
information may be lost as answers are usually brief.
