Academic Malpractice:
Academic Malpractice can result from a deliberate act of cheating and may be
committed unintentionally. Academic malpractice can take many different
forms. Plagiarism is only one example. The University defines plagiarism as,
presenting the ideas, work or words of other people without proper, clear and
unambiguous acknowledgement. There are University guidelines on avoiding
plagiarism and other forms of academic malpractice such as; collusion or the
fabrication or falsification of data that are explained in, The University of
Manchester Guidance To Students on Plagiarism and Other Forms of
Academic Malpractice, from the Teaching and Learning Support Office;
http://www.tlso.manchester.ac.uk/map/teachinglearningassessment/assessment/sect
iond-theprocessofassessment/academicmalpracticeincludingplagiarism/

Academic malpractice is taken seriously by the University and further

information on plagiarism can be found in the School of MACE,
Undergraduate Course Handbook which you received during Welcome
Week.
To help you avoid plagiarism, the University Library has a number of
resources on the Library Website:

There is an interactive BlackBoard module titled, Academic Malpractice: All

Coursework submission instructions:
Students should submit their completed coursework via Blackboard via the
MACE10492 course. (See the assessment link) The submission deadline is
23:00 hrs on 9/3/2015.
Learning Outcomes:
This coursework assessment tests your understanding of the following
Learning Outcomes in this course unit (See unit specification for further
details).

Use basic electrical meters to measure quantities such as current, voltage and
resistance.

Apply circuit analysis methods to predict resistances, currents and voltages in a

practical circuit and to compare theoretical models with actual measurements.

Build a circuit involving strain gauge resistors and meters arranged in order to
characterise the bend of a steel beam under different loading conditions.

Apply the Safe working practice methods covered in the lectures.

Use your laboratory coursework experience to help you subsequently work

collaboratively in a team.

Laboratory Procedure
1.0

Measurement of Resistor Values

1.1 You have been provided with 5 different colour coded resistors. Use the colour code charts to work
out the specified resistance of each resistor and enter the value in the table below on page 5. Also use
the meter provided, set on a suitable resistance scale to measure the individual resistances of the
components and record these readings in the same table.
1.2 Build the following networks on the Locktronic board and measure the resistance between
terminals A,B in each case. Copy these networks and record your results.

Measurement of Voltages and Currents

2.1 Set the power supplies to provide 12V output and 8V output respectively. Check these
voltage outputs using the meters supplied.

2.3 Using the meter measure all of the essential (principal) node voltages with respect to the voltage
reference point. Record your results on a circuit diagram.
2.4 Measure the voltage across each resistor. Also note their directions. Show this on a circuit diagram.
2.5 Using the meter provided measure all of the branch currents in the circuit. Record the magnitude
and direction of the currents on a circuit diagram.

3.0 Strain Gauge Measurement

Before you leave the laboratory carry out the strain gauge measurement as per instruction from the
demonstrator.
