SOUNDBITE(English) Imam Icar, Deputy Mayor of Mogadishu:
It is a year and six months with the same team that attended the
basic fire-fighting training here in Nairobi, with the same school,
with the support from UNSOA, which we really appreciate and
AMISOM. So far the team has done missions. Last year they
extinguished emergency related fires that broke out in the city
which were around 78 and they responded immediately to the
calls which were received by their department. I think we are in
the second year in Mogadishu which is a little bit dangerous, a
little bit risky and we know what happened last Friday in Central
Hotel, which has been really a deep sorrow for the Somali people
and they also took part in trying to save what they could save. It
was 56 alerts that came and they attended and for that we are
thankful to UNSOA, the trainers and the school that has put their
capacity to solve the problems in the city.

10. SOUNDBITE(English) Imam Icar, Deputy Mayor of Mogadishu:
The other good thing is they are in the capacity of training others
in Mogadishu. They have trained a group from Jowhar, which we
have supplied a fire fighting truck with success, and the last
training they gave to 21 police officers who were trained also at
the basic level.

13. SOUNDBITE(English) Imam Icar, Deputy Mayor of Mogadishu:

What we are expecting is to give a chance to groups of youth in
Mogadishu and Somalia in General. Now we see the youth as a
risk, time bomb but we are looking forward to see the youth who
will be the life savers not destroyers of others but like those who
are sitting in front of you that will show their potential in saving
the lives of Somali people .

16. SOUNDBITE(Somali) Ali Mohamed Sheik, First secretary Somali
Embassy in Kenya:
The most important is what knowledge you are getting today
from here. Money can be lost but not the knowledge you have
acquired and that is important. You are among the few youths that
have been trained in fire-fighting in Somalia. May Allah help you to
implement what you have acquired from this training. May you
succeed, also with your friend the Mayor, here with you today.

Somali firefighters undergo training in Nairobi
6th March 2015 Mogadishu, Somalia: Eighteen Somali firefighters are
undergoing a five-week intensive firefighting course at the East Africa
School of Aviation in Nairobi, Kenya.
The course is centred on the International Civil Aviation Organization
(ICAO) training curriculum and will equip the trainees with advanced
skills in firefighting.
It is a follow up to another firefighting training that the group took part
in, in 2014.
At the end of the training, the Somali fire fighters will also be better
placed to give first aid and manage trauma in fire victims.
The five-week training was opened by Deputy Mayor of Mogadishu Imam
Icar who thanked the trainees for professionalism and swiftness with
which they control fire outbreaks in the city of Mogadishu. Last year
they distinguished emergency related fires that broke out in the city
which were around 78. They responded immediately to the calls which
were received by their department, said the deputy mayor.
He said similar training would take place in different regions in Somalia
with the support of donors.

The training is funded by AMISOM Trust Fund through the United

Nations Support Office for African Union Mission in Somalia (UNSOA).
