AMT 525 - Airport Planning and Design, 3 Credit Hours
Course Description

Students will complete various phases of the airport master planning process. The course provides
guidance for the logical and timely development of airports. Project work groups may be assigned.
Prerequisites
Graduate or Non Degree Students OR Senior in Fulton School of Engineering with a University Cum GPA 3.0
or greater

Airport Engineering: Planning, Design and Development of 21st Century Airports, 4th Edition, 2011 (Wiley);
Norman J. Ashford, Saleh Mumayiz, & Paul H. Wright (Textbooks are available in the ASU bookstore or
online at various booksellers. Electronic copies of this book are also available online. Students can choose
their source and format as they prefer.)
FAA Advisory Circulars as referenced in the course outline. Advisory Circulars are available via the Internet
at www.faa.gov.
Bow compass, engineers scale, electronic calculator, and computer based drawing or CAD program
(recommended).
Course Objectives
1. To introduce students to airport planning and design.
2. To provide students with practical experience with FAA design standards.
3. To provide students with fundamental airport planning and design knowledge.

Performance Evaluation
1. Assignments There are a series of exercises and reports that are to be completed and submitted by
the applicable due date. Each assignment is graded as a separate project and worth between 10 and 20
points.
2. Tests/Quizzes Quizzes may be given periodically throughout the semester. Advance notice may or may
not be given at the instructors discretion. A comprehensive final exam will be given at the conclusion of
the semester.
