METHOLODOLOGY

This provides a description of the study area ,population and research design. It also
talk about sampling procedure, date collection and analysis.
Research design
The study was descriptive, and was based on the survey strategy or approach of
research. The researcher relied on both primary and secondary data for the study.
The primary data sources comprised data collected by the researcher solely for the
specific objectives of the study through a questionnaire. Secondery data source
compried mostly published scholarly articles which forms the foundation for the
literature review. This included library materials , text books ,journals magazines
,newspapers annual records and reports , government documents, the internet, and
other useful materials deemed relevant for this study .

STUDY AREA
Nugua is a town in Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal district in the Greater Accra Region
of southeastern Ghana near the coast. Nungua is the eighteenth most populous
settlement in Ghana, in terms of population, with a population of 84,119 people.
The indigenous people of Nungua are basically into fishing and trading,
administering and sales of land, and rent of property to earn a living. Others are
government workers and workers of a variety of privately owned businesses.
Nungua is open for settlement of people from all the ten regions in Ghana and some
foreigners from other countries as well who have acquired lands and built houses to
settle there or living in rented apartments. it is also surrounded by market and
manufacturing industries. The community which is located not far form the city
Accra is overpopulated and popularly known for its poor housing structures made
mostly without toilet in them. The communities lack some infrastructural facilities
such as toilets, proper drainage systems and some basic services like good
sanitation and efficient waste collection which is affecting the population and the
environment.
POPULATION OF THE STUDY
On of the basis of the purpose of the study, the target population of the study was
the inhabitants, both residents and traders at nugua. The traders were considered
part of the target population because they are ordinary residents of the area .in
other words, they spend most of their time there, engaging in selling all kinds of
commodities.
SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

In collecting data form the field, the stratified-simple random sampling method was
used, in this method, the population is first divided in to homogenous groups on the
basis of some characteristics. Thereafter, a representative sample is obtained by
randomly sampling the desired number from each stratum or group. The stratified
method was implemented by stratifying or grouping /private firms, traders. Then
random sampling was used in administering the questionnaires/ the primary reason
for the adoption of stratified-simple random technique is to give each respondent
equal chance of being selected, thus composing a sample that would produce data
that can be generalized in relation to the area under study.
SAMPLE SIZE
The researcher intended to interview forty (10) works of the public/private firms,
twenty (20) traders, and ten head porters (kayayos). After the field work, the
researcher was able to interview thirty (30) respondents with the help of
questionnaires. Among this thirty30 respondents, fourteen 14 were traders three 3
were workers of the public /private firms whiles the remaining being head porters.

DATA COLLECTION
Data was collected us using a questionnaire. Which was designed based on the
objectives of the study, and were made up of both opened and closed ended
questions. The questionnaire as structured with two sections A and B section A
contained questions that sought to obtain the biographic data of the respondents.
Whiles section B contained of questions designed to collect information on the
following
Causes of indiscriminate solid disposal,
Type of waste generated,
Methods of waste disposal,
Impacts of waste disposal on the environment,
Suggestion on way to improve waste disposal in the area,
A sample of the questionnaire is in Appendix one.

DATAANALYSIS
The data collected was analyzed with the help of statistical product and services
solutions version sixteen (SPSS 16) software and presented in tables and graphs for

discussion. Close-ended questions and specific responses were coded to enable

easy analysis
