The 231 Gates are found in the Sepher Yetzirah Ch: 2 V: 4, and relates to the idea of the Hebrew letters
being place into sets of two letters.
These twenty-two letters, which are the foundation of all things, He arranged as upon a sphere
with two hundred and thirty-one gates, and the sphere may be rotated forward or backward,
whether for good or for evil; from the good comes true pleasure, from evil nought but torment.
The basic idea here is the pairing of every Hebrew letter with another, much like the pairing of elemental
energies. These 231 gates form the building blocks from which all Hebrew wards can be extracted from.
These gates are the bases of Raymond Lulls alphabetic Wheels.

The above tables list the 231 gates into two sets. These are the 231 gates that when moving forward through
the gates is the process of Creation, and the second set is the process of destruction moving through the
gates in reverse.
The procedure is to visual each pair in ones mind using the alphabetical order as a mnemonic device. Like a
family tree the largest number of gates is at the top where we start and at the bottom there is one gate, that
of our self. This is done as a form of meditative path working. The e-book Permutations of the Tree by
Rawn Clark goes into greater detail on the method of working.
The other method of working with the 231 gates is as a form of a set of words of power. The idea behind
this method of use for the 231 gates can be found in The Key to the True Quabbalah by Franz Bardon. The
last part of this book gives the power invested in the sound of each pair of letter.
The 231 gates are rich in symbolism and can be thought of like a cosmology system much like the Gnostic
30 Aeons. The following table gives some basic symbolism of the 231 gates.
