SITE LOCATION

The site for the war memorial and museum is at princess park and is
located between Tilak marg and Copernicus marg. The site is situated at
the hexagon road near India gate complex.
The central vista which forms the nucleus of New Delhi, extends from
Rashtrapati Bhawan to National stadium. It houses the head of the state,
both secretariats, the principal offices of the central government and some
of the national level social and cultural institutions.

The existing structure on the site consist of G+1 defence barracks that had
been constructed during the 2nd world war for emergency storage.
Total area of the site : 9 Acre .The site lies in NDMC area and Zone D-8
in Master plan Delhi 2021.

The location of the site is perfect as it houses a national war memorial in


the vicinity. The Indian Gate complex is the best suited location for the
setting up a war memorial and museum. The site is centrally located on the
defined VIP route for ceremonial events and most of the land belongs to
the Defence ministry.

TRAFFIC MOVEMENT
Commuters from north and east delhi cross this area every day to reach the
south delhi and vice versa. The Chattri and the hexagonal movement around
it become a major traffic rotary for this purpose. However few means of
public transport are routed across the central vista and the greens making
them largely inert except opened for ceremonial purposes. Most bus routes
are designed to bypass it on east and west ends. Major bus stop is Patiala
House Bus Stop.

SITE CONTEXT

Lutyens and his team borrowed freely Indian design elements using them not only as
appropriate building components but also to create a contextual continuity.
Apart from chattri, stone trelliswork, sunshades, balconies supported by brackets,
characterstic door and window details, cornices, mouldings are executed in red and pink
sandstone in the central vista.
In lutyens own building concrete or masonry structures are often cladded with stone is used
directly as structural material.
The warm hues of stone complement the vast green background in the central vista.

SITE DETAILS

The site is surrounded with trees from all the sides. No overhead cables are seen, keeping in
context of the urban design. All the cables are underground.
The zone is almost fully served by underground sewerage. The zone has seeral major storm
water drains. Site is generally flat with trees.
