Anthony: Hi, Im Anthony. Jezer: And my name is Jezer. Anthony: And were here to talk to you about the accounting program at San Diego State University. Whether youre a current or a prospective student, you have come to the right place. We will discuss the structure of the courses, the recruiting process and career opportunities that await graduating students, and the BMACC program. Anthony: Well begin by discussing the course structure of the upper division accounting program. The ACCTG program is unique in that its core classes are all 6 units. One of the more challenging classes you will have as an accounting student is accounting 321, the first of the core classes. This class requires a great deal of time and effort. Having passed the class ourselves, it is our strong recommendation that students find a good study group. Having strong team support is key to excelling in that class, and that advice applies to all subsequent accounting courses. Jezer: We will now discuss the timeline for the recruiting process. The majority of firms and companies in the San Diego area interview students for potential employment in the fall and spring semesters. The purpose of the fall semester recruiting is for students to find fulltime employment opportunities after graduation. Fall recruiting typically starts at the beginning of the fall semester where firms post listings on the SDSU Career Services website. On this website, students are encouraged to apply to attend tours of their offices. A select group of students are then invited to take part in two rounds of interviews after which offers of employment are extended to selected students. During the spring, firms recruit for summer internship positions. The recruiting session begins with firms posting listings for firm tour applications in the end of December. After the firm tour, selected students will then experience the same two-round interview system that exists in the fall recruiting session. Anthony: A significant trait that firms and companies look for in students is their involvement in on-campus accounting organizations. Currently, San Diego State offers three different accounting organizations: ALPFA, the Student Accounting Society, and Beta Alpha Psi. All of these organizations offer networking and learning opportunities within the accounting industry. It is important to research these organizations as soon as possible in order to learn of the membership requirements and opportunities associated with each.

Information is available on each of the organizations respective websites including contact information for officers who are more than willing to share information with you. Other networking opportunities include the two banquets that occur at the end of each semester: Meet the Firms in the fall and the Charles W. Lamden School of Accountancy Banquet in spring. Both of these events have many firms and companies in attendance and are open to all accounting students. Jezer: When selecting classes in the accounting program or considering accounting as a major, it is important to know the potential career paths upon graduation. The primary career paths that exist include public accounting, private accounting, and governmental accounting. Public accounting involves working for a firm that lends its expertise to clients that require tax, audit, advisory and other services. Private accounting involves working for a company and performing accounting work within the single company. Lastly, governmental accounting involves working for a governmental entity at either the federal, state, county, or local level. Anthony: Another opportunity that students may have is choosing to take part in the BMACC program. The BMACC program, also known as the 4+1 program, allows students to overlap requirements in the bachelors degree and the masters degree, so you can work towards both at the same time and get out in 5 years with both of those degrees. Hopefully the information in this video will help you in your path in the SDSU ACCTG program. Thank you for your time and we wish you the best in your academic and professional degree.
