Glossary Terms

Blog: A website that allows users to reflect, share opinions, and


discuss various topics in the form of an online journal
Boolean logic: A system of symbolic logic devised by George Boole;
used in computers
Browser: A Web browser is a software application for retrieving,
presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide
Web
Cache: In computer science, a cache (, ) is a collection of data
duplicating original values stored elsewhere or computed earlier
Compression: encoding information while reducing the bandwidth or
bits required
Cookie: A cookie (also tracking cookie, browser cookie, and HTTP
cookie) is a small piece of text stored on a user's computer by a web
browse
Domain: A domain is a field of study that defines a set of common
requirements, terminology, and functionality for any software program
constructed to solve a problem in the area of computer programming,
known as domain engineering
Email: A system for transferring messages from one computer to
another, usually via a network
File extension: A suffix to the name of a computer file applied to
indicate the encoding convention (file format) of its contents
Firewall: A part of a computer system or network that is designed to
block unauthorized access while permitting authorized communications
FTP: (File Transfer Protocol) A very common method of moving files
between two Internet sites
Html: (HyperText Markup Language) - A standard language used for
creating and publishing documents on the World Wide Web
Internet: A worldwide system of interconnected networks allowing for
data transmission between millions of computers
Intranet: An intranet is an access restricted network used internally
in an organization
IP address: [Internet Protocol (IP) address] - A unique numeric
identifier for a computer on a network
ISP packet: Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are the Web Site
Hosting companies that provide a home for merchant's web sites
Netiquette: Code of behaviour or etiquette on the Internet
Mirror: An exact duplicate of a web site, usually hosted on a different
physical server

Modem: (From a combination of MOdulate and DEModulate) electronic


equipment consisting of a device used to connect computers by a
telephone line
Web design: The design and development of a web site
Website: A collection of "web pages" or files linked together and
available on the World Wide Web
Search engine: A computer program that retrieves documents or files
or data from a database or from a computer network (especially from
the internet)
Spiders: A computer program that prowls the internet looking for
publicly accessible resources that can be added to a database; the
database can then be searched with a search engine
TCP/IP: (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) - This set
of protocols makes TELNET, FTP, e-mail, and other services possible
among computers that don't belong to the same network
URL: (Uniform Resource Locator) - the address of a web page on the
world wide web
Virus: A software program capable of reproducing itself and usually
capable of causing great harm to files or other programs on the same
computer
Wiki: A type of website that allows the visitors themselves to easily
add, remove and otherwise edit and change some available content
