Klimt und die nackte Wahrheit

In der Politik ist die nackte Wahr heit oft nicht schn. In der bildenden
Kunst hingegen schon. So sinnierte
Parlamentsprsident Lszl Kvr in
seiner Rede zur Erffnungsfeier der
Ausstellung Nuda Veritas. Gustav
Klimt und die Ursprnge der Wiener
Sezession 1895-1905 am vergange nen Donnerstag im Museum der
schnen Knste. Ein Gang durch die
Ausstellung zeigt: Der Mann hat
Recht, nicht nur, was Politik betrifft.

man die 1897 gegrndete Vereinigung bildender Knstler sterreichs. Ihre Anfangsjahre gelten
als goldene ra und als die faszinierendste Phase in der Kunstgeschichte sterreichs, stellen sie doch
die Geburt der modernen Kunst in
Wien dar. In dieser Zeit, von 1895
bis 1905, war der Maler Gustav
Klimt prgendes Mitglied und erster
Vorsitzender der Gruppe, die den
Anspruch hatte, sich in ihrem knstlerischen Schaffen gezielt von der
konservativen, im Historismus verhafteten Kunstwelt abzuspalten. Das
Ergebnis dessen wird heute gemeinhin als Sezessionsstil bezeichnet,
die Wiener Variante des um 1900 in
ganz Europa verbreiteten Jugendstils
mit der fr ihn typischen, organischen Ornamentik. Nuda Veritas
gibt einen berblick ber die
Ursprnge, Entstehungsgeschichte,
Mitglieder und frhen Jahre der
Wiener Sezession.

viel Platz ein: Zahlreiche, teils erotische Akt- und Portrtzeichnungen
sind vom herausragenden Vertreter
und geistigen Fhrer der Sezessionisten, Gustav Klimt, zu sehen.
Wunderschne, zumeist unbekleidete
Frauen, die stehend, liegend, schlafend, in der Regel als Kreidezeichnung,
aber auch in Gemldeform festgehalten wurden. Herausragendes Beispiel
fr Letzteres ist Nuda Veritas, das
Ganzkrperbild einer zarten, rothaarigen Frau mit wilden Augen, einer
Art emanzipierter Venus, bei der
Klimt bereits mit seinen typischen
Goldapplikationen arbeitete. Auch
einige stimmungsvolle, melancholische Landschaftsgemlde von ihm
sind zu sehen. Sein wohl berhmtestes Bild Judith vor Holofernes wie
auch andere, vorrangig Gold gestalteten und fr ihn typischen Werke,
wird man zumindest bei dieser
Ausstellung im Museum der schnen
Knste jedoch nicht finden.

Wie kommt ein Gemlde von Klimt in ein
Theatermuseum?
Das ist eine ganz interessante Geschichte. Aber
dafr muss ich etwas ausholen. Die Nuda Veritas
war ursprnglich im Besitz von Hermann Bahr,
einem sterreichischen Schriftsteller, Dramatiker,
Theater- und Literaturkritiker. Dieser war sehr
gut mit Klimt befreundet und hatte das Bild von
ihm erstanden. Als Bahr verstarb, hinterlie er
seinen ganzen Besitz seiner Frau Anna von
Mildenburg. Anna war zu ihrer Zeit eine Sopranistin, gefeierte Wagner-Interpretin und die
Geliebte Mahlers. An ihr sieht man auch, wie eng
die damalige sterreichische Knstlergesellschaft
verbunden war. Auf jeden Fall hinterlie Anna
von Mildenburg den gesamten Nachlass von
Hermann Bahr Bilder, Tagebcher und Briefe
der sterreichischen Nationalbibliothek, die ihn
dann spter an das sterreichische Theatermuseum weitergab.

Wie hat es dann doch noch mit der Ausstellung
geklappt?
Nun ja, Budapest war so flexibel, dass es die
Ausstellung einfach um ein paar Jahre verschob.
Und das sterreichische Theatermuseum hat
dann weiter dafr gekmpft, dass das Bild nach
Ungarn ausreisen durfte. Damals war es mir extrem unangenehm, dass ich nach der Zusage wieder eine Absage machen musste, deswegen freut
es mich heute umso mehr, dass es geklappt hat.

Die Klimt-Ausstellung war eigentlich schon vor 34 Jahren geplant. Warum hat das nicht geklappt?
Die Anfrage von Budapest kam tatschlich
schon vor einigen Jahren. Mein Museum hatte
auch schon die Zustimmung dafr gegeben, aber
es gab ein Problem: Das sterreichische Bundesdenkmalamt verweigerte die Genehmigung zur
Ausfuhr. Das Gemlde wurde nmlich nach einer

! Warum ist die Nuda Veritas so bedeutend?

Ausstellung in Liverpool zwei Jahre lang fr die

Ausreise gesperrt und wird auch jetzt wieder
nach der Ausstellung in Budapest gesperrt sein.
Sie mssen wissen, dass Bilder die sehr viel reisen, auch immer wieder Ruhephasen bentigen.
Diese bergangszeiten dienen dem Schutz der
Bilder, denn durch den Transport und die klimatischen Vernderungen, selbst innerhalb eines
Museums, kann das Bild Schaden nehmen. Und
das gilt besonders fr die Nuda Veritas, unseren
Wanderpokal.

Was meinen Sie mit Wanderpokal?

Das Gemlde reiste schon in der Zeit von Bahr
durch die ganze Welt, und das hat sich bis heute
fortgesetzt. Wir bekommen Anfragen fr das
Bild von Kanada ber Paris bis Australien. Das
ist manchmal etwas anstrengend, auch fr das
Gemlde. Der Besuch des Bildes, Anfang der 90!

Erstmal ist es eine kunsthistorische Raritt.

Des Weiteren wurde das Bild auf einer bereits gerahmten Leinwand gemalt, was sehr selten ist. Es
ist auch noch in seinem ursprnglichen Rahmen,
man kann die Farbflecke auf dem Holz bis heute
sehen. Auerdem ist da noch der Text ber dem
Bild, der von Schiller stammt. Wie Sie bestimmt
wissen, war Klimt zu seiner Zeit sehr umstritten
und wurde viel kritisiert. Ich will das Bild auf
keinen Fall interpretieren oder erklren, aber vielleicht kann ich mit einem Zitat von Klimt etwas
zum Verstndnis beitragen: Wer ber mich als
Knstler etwas beachtenswertes wissen will, der
soll meine Bilder betrachten und daraus zu erkennen suchen, was ich bin und was ich will.
Und das sollte man auf jeden Fall. Ich persnlich
habe die Nuda Veritas schon sehr oft gesehen
und finde dieses Gemlde absolut faszinierend.

he Vienna Secession which began in 1897 with the

foundation of the Union of Austrian Artists was a
golden era in the nations art history. Its members
were intent on creating a new style of art that would break
out of the confines of the conservative art world and its
adherence to historicism. This was Austrias distinctive
version of the Art Nouveau style, whose typically organic,
ornamental forms flourished in Europe at the turn of the
20th century.

Munch from the Albertina Museum in Vienna and the

collection of the Museum of Fine Arts are shown in the
Nuda Veritas exhibition.
The Beethoven exhibition of 1912 is highlighted as the
culmination of the groups efforts to create total art (the idea
that art can be the result of synthesising several disciplines). Artists of the Vienna Secession including Ferdinand
Andri, Carl Moll, Moser and Emil Orlik also played an important role in sparking the Modern revival of the woodcut
genre. It was thanks to them
that this technique became so
popular in around 1900.

Spiritual leader

Gustav Klimt was one of the movements leading figures

and the first president of the union. The end of the Vienna
Secession was marked by the decision of Klimt and other
artists in 1905 to leave the union over differences of opinion
regarding artistic concepts. The Nuda Veritas exhibition
portrays the origins and development of the movement with
particular emphasis on Klimt.

Intense activity
The exhibited works (drawings and prints, as well as a
number of sculptures) reveal the radicalism of the groups
artists in their choice of motifs and their experimental style,
particularly when viewed in the context of the time. Brief
portraits of the movements leading figures (including Alfred
Roller, Kolo Moser and Maximilian Lenz), contemporary
photographs, exhibition posters and catalogues document
the group.
It is testament to their productivity that over the period of
just a few years the group mounted 23 exhibitions, at which
it presented both its own pieces and those of international
artists that had provided inspiration. Some of those influential works by artists including Paul Gaugin and Edvard

Nuda Veritas devotes a lot

of space to naked truths in the
more literal sense. Countless
nude and portrait drawings,
some of them erotic, by the
spiritual leader of the
Secessionists, Klimt, are on
display. Beautiful, usually
unclothed
women
are
portrayed standing, lying and
sleeping, mainly as chalk
sketches. The exhibition also
features paintings, however,
including the Nuda Veritas, a
full-body depiction of a delicate red-haired woman with wild
eyes holding up a mirror of truth, and using Klimts familiar
gold-leaf technique. Above it is a quotation from German
poet and philosopher Friedrich Schiller, which reads: If you
cannot please everyone with your deeds and your art,
please a few. To please many is bad. A number of Klimts
atmospheric and melancholic landscape paintings are
shown but visitors will not find his probably most famous
work, Judith and the Head of Holofernes, and other characteristic works from his golden period in this exhibition.

late, but

the Gustav Klimt painting Nuda Veritas to the
Museum of Fine Arts, spoke to The Budapest Times
about the works history and significance.
How does a
painting by Klimt
come into the
ownership of a
theatre museum?
Thats a very
interesting story
but first I need to
digress a little.
The Nuda Veritas Thomas Trabitsch
was
originally
owned by Hermann Bahr, an Austrian writer, playwright, director, and theatre and literature critic. He
was very good friends with Klimt and bought the
picture from him. When Bahr died he left all his
estate to his wife, Anna von Mildenburg. Anna was in
her day a soprano, a celebrated Wagner interpreter
and Mahlers lover. That also gives an idea of how
close-knit Austrian art society was at that time. In any
case, Anna von Mildenburg bequeathed the entire
estate of Hermann Bahr including pictures, diaries
and letters to the Austrian National Library, which
then later passed them on to the Austrian Theatre
Museum.
The Klimt exhibition was actually planned for three to
four years ago. What was the obstacle?
We received an inquiry from Budapest a few years
ago. My museum gave its agreement but a problem
then arose: the Austrian Federal Office for the Care
of Monuments refused to grant permission for the
painting to be taken out of the country. The picture
was barred from leaving the country for two years
after it took part in an exhibition in Liverpool. The
same will happen after this exhibition in Budapest.
You see, pictures travel a lot and they also need to
have periods of calm. Those interim rest periods are
used to protect the pictures since they can be
damaged by being transported and by climatic
changes, even within one museum. That is particularly true of the Nuda Veritas, our travelling trophy.

Review: Nuda Veritas exhibition

at Museum of Fine Arts

The picture travelled in the world even in the time of

Bahr and that has continued today. We receive
requests for the Nuda Veritas from everywhere from
Canada to Paris to Australia. That can sometimes be
rather exhausting for the painting too. However, its
trip to Japan in the early 1990s also had a positive
effect: Japanese experts carried out the urgentlyneeded restoration of the picture.
Why is the Nuda Veritas so significant?
Firstly, it is an art-historical rarity. The picture was
painted on an already framed canvas, which is
extremely rare. It is still in its original frame and spots
of paint can still be seen on the wood. In addition,
there is the quotation above the picture from Schiller.
As you surely know, Klimt was very controversial and
much-criticised in his day. I have no wish to interpret
or explain the picture but perhaps I can contribute
something towards understand it by citing the words
of Klimt: Whoever wants to know something about
me (as an artist, the only notable thing) ought to look
carefully at my pictures and try and see in them what
I am and what I want to do. That is certainly true. I
personally have seen the Nuda Veritas very many
times and find the painting absolutely fascinating.
