THURSDAY

PROFILES
Featuring those
in the business of
promoting and maintaining

good health

With the ever-changing landscape of medicine, having

a pharmacist patients can talk with and trust is vital.
Thats where The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in Affton,
under the leadership of Merry Lynn Schmittgens, RPh,
can be of service.
Pharmacists are better educated than ever before and
still very accessible to patients, said Schmittgens.
Pharmacists are a terrific resource in this new, confusing
health care landscape. A pharmacy you can rely on is
invaluable.
In addition to prescriptions, The Medicine Shoppe
provides medication therapy management, disease state
management in diabetes, asthma and allergy, hypertension,
depression and high cholesterol.
Assisting Schmittgens are pharmacists Jim Hok and
Ras Chereson, pharmacy technicians Karen Richard,
Amira Mujkic and Amie Reynolds, along with pharmacy
interns Shelby, Lauren, Emily and Mena.
Through her staff, Schmittgens is able to understand
more cultures and languages. Amira speaks Bosnian, Jim
speaks Chinese and Mena speaks Egyptian.
Schmittgens and her husband Tom bought The
Medicine Shoppe from Rich and Belle Schneider in 1998
when they retired after 22-plus years. The store was
originally on Weber Road at Dana.
Clients say they like the personal service, long-term
relationships and the friendly, knowledgeable staff. The
delivery guy, Dave is the friendliest, most gracious
gentleman, Schmittgens said.
There are times when a knowledgeable presence can
really help a family, said Schmittgens. When people are
really sick or struggling with a chronic disease, or a
terrifying diagnosis, our presence, our knowledge and our
concern really help.

Since 1993, Watson Imaging Center has been providing

quality diagnostic imaging at an affordable rate. The
centers specialties are digital mammograms, CAT scans,
ultrasounds, X-rays and bone density scans.
Watson Imaging Center is independently owned, which
enables the company to offer competitive pricing. The
center contracts with most major insurance companies and
offers discounted rates to patients without insurance.
Watson Imaging has no financial ties with any hospitals
and is accredited by the American College of Radiology.
Our mission is to provide convenient, affordable and
accurate radiology services while maintaining personalized,
professional service to all patients, said a company
spokesperson.
The staff consists of highly trained, certified technologists
with many years of experience. Images are read by boardcertified radiologists who are on duty daily. Technologists
regularly attend continuing education classes to stay
current on the latest techniques, and the company
continually updates its technology.
X-rays are performed on a walk-in basis, and Watson
Imaging Center offers same day appointments for most
exams with results within 24 hours.
The people are all very friendly and professional and
they get you in and out quickly, said customer K.F. of St.
Louis. Each time I have been to Watson Imaging, I have
had very pleasant experiences.
The staff reminds patients that you have the right to
choose where to go for your imaging. Tell your doctor that
you want to go to Watson Imaging Center.
Watson Imaging Center is located at the corner of
Watson Road and Lindenwood with front-door parking.

Amy Krueger, Manager/Audiologist at HearUSA in

Concord Plaza, has a passion for helping people with
hearing loss.
That passion became apparent while she was working as
a hearing aid technician at the California Ear Institute at
Stanford. Since then she has gained over 15 years experience
in diagnostic audiology and the hearing instrument
industry. She has a masters degree in audiology from the
University of Virginia.
I have been with HearUSA since 2009 and have
worked in both management and provider roles since
joining the company, she said. I am happy to be providing
care to patients on a full-time basis in our Concord office.
What I enjoy most about my profession is that every
day I have an opportunity to make a positive, lasting
difference in peoples lives, she added.
HearUSA provides hearing care services, hearing testing,
hearing care solutions including hearing aids and assistive
technology. HearUSA is a recognized leader in hearing
health care. The first center opened in 1987 in Florida. The
Concord location has been in operation for over 10 years.
The most modern hearing aid is only as effective as the
clinician who matches the technology features to your needs
and produces a meaningful and measurable benefit, said
Krueger. I use real ear measurements to verify hearing and
fittings. My patients appreciate the extra time and care they
receive at HearUSA.
With modern technology, hearing aids are smaller,
smarter and more effective than ever before and a lot less
noticeable than untreated hearing loss. Bluetooth technology
allows patients to connect hearing aids wirelessly to cell
phones, television iPods and other electronic devices.

Medical Specialists group, provides primary care services

A 1984 graduate of the American University of the
Caribbean School of Medicine, Dr. McCann completed
his residency at St. Lukes Hospital in 1987. He is on the
medical staff at Des Peres Hospital, St. Marys Health
Center, St. Anthonys Medical Center, Barnes-Jewish
Hospital and St. Alexius Hospital.
McCann gets the most satisfaction from practicing
preventative medicine.
I love when patients are involved and proactive in
their health care, he said.
Patients appreciate the time Dr. McCann spends with
them.
Dr. McCann is an attentive and inquisitive person
who genuinely cares about the patients progress, said an
anonymous patient. He spaces his appointments out so
you dont feel like youre at a medical money mill. He is a
shining example of how all doctors should be. He is the
perfect combination of medical expertise and wonderful
personality.
McCann is taking new patients, and accepts most
insurance plans, including Medicare. However, he is not
currently accepting new Medicaid patients. Same day
appointments are available.
