SECTION 4 INSTALLATION

GENERAL
RDP-300 Remote Display Panels are delivered in sturdy cartons to prevent shipping damages. Upon
receipt of the unit, check for damage, and if there is evidence of such, immediately file a claim with the
carrier and notify the Basler Electric Regional Sales Office, your Sales Representative or Sales
Representative at Basler Electric, Highland, Illinois.
If the remote display is not installed immediately, store it in the original shipping package in a moisture and
dust free environment.

HARDWARE
RDP-300 panels are packaged in NEMA 12/4 cases to provide a degree of protection against circulating
dust, falling debris, and dripping noncorrosive liquids. These panels are suitable for semi-flush mounting
in building interiors or exteriors. The touch screen covers are made of a tough, flexible material and can
withstand some hard use. Damaged screen covers may be removed and replaced. Mounting brackets
are packed inside the carton.

MOUNTING
Figure 4-1 provides the overall dimensions, and Figure 4-2 provides the cutout diagram for mounting
RDP-300 units.

Installation Hints
In order to protect the unit, to provide accessibility in operation, and to improve ventilation, ensure that
there is adequate space around the unit. The recommended clearance is four inches from other
structures. Ensure that this unit is located as far away as possible from electromagnetic circuits, circuit
breakers, and other equipment that may cause arcing.
This unit is held in place by metal clamps. The panel thickness should be .062" (1.6 mm) to .3937"
(10 mm).
Forced air cooling is required if this unit is to be used in a surrounding temperature which is greater than
50C. Route all signal lines in a separate duct, away from power circuits. Use shielded cable and tie the
shield to the Frame Ground contact point.
This unit must be installed vertically for natural air cooling. Ensure that heat from other equipment does
not add heat to this unit.
Do not hit the touch panel with a hard or heavy object or press the touch panel with too much force.
Do not use paint thinner or organic solvents to clean the unit or display.
Mounting Instructions
Ensure that the flat gasket remains in the slot in the faceplate as shown in Figure 4-3. Insert the display
through the panel opening. Insert the panel clamps into the slots in the display body. Use a screwdriver
to turn the panel clamp screw clockwise to tighten the display into the mounting panel. Torque the panel
clamp screw to 4.4 to 5.3 inch pounds (0.5 to 0.6 Newton meters).

CONNECTIONS
CAUTION
Be sure that the RPD-300 input polarity is wired correctly. Reverse polarity battery power
will not allow the unit to be DC powered. Incorrect wiring may result in damage to the
remote display.

NOTE
Be sure the remote display panel is hard-wired to earth ground with no smaller than 16
AWG copper wire attached to the chassis terminal on the rear of the remote display.
Twisted pair cable with a shield is recommended for wiring the RS-485 communication
circuits. The shield is to be connected ONLY at the RDP-300 terminal marked shield.
Optional, 120 ohm terminating resistors may be installed across the RS-485 circuit
terminations.
Except as noted above, connections should be made with minimum wire size of 20 AWG. Be sure to use
the correct input power for the power supply. Figure 4-4 is a typical connection diagram.
