Objectives
Wipro Limited (Wipro), together with its subsidiaries and associates
(collectively, the Company or the group) is a leading India based
provider of IT Services and Products, including Business Process
.

Outsourcing (BPO) services, globally. Further, Wipro has other

businesses such as India and Asia Pacific IT Services and Products and
Consumer Care and Lighting. Wipro is headquartered in Bangalore,
India.

It has been ranked 6th in the American society for training and
development during 2006.it is ranked 6 the globally and is the only it
service in the top 10 .it provide rich learning experinence for the
employees that translates in the delivery of higher value and improved
customer satisfaction it has capacity to train around 5000 employees
simultaneously. It has learning centers in Bangalore, Chennai,
Hyderabad, Pune and gurgaon.and all the learning centers are
connected with virtual class room network with the broad class facility in
Hyderabad and Bangalore.
Wipro significantly outsources the same. Also training is more vocational
where in focus is on teaching individuals tools rather than fundamentals
(however their WASE program for BSc folks is an exception). I know it
will be strongly objected to by Wipro folks but I suggest they do a quick
poll.
In India Wipro had profitable business in niche marketing segment of
product and services.

Wipro does not get premier slots in engineering campus viz a viz its
competitors. There are geographies where it even looses out to lower
rung players like Cognizant. Its lower compensation than its competitors
does not help. To make matters worse, entry level guy is not hired
predominantly on potential but ability to answer questions which require
role.

SCOPE

We at Wipro believe in individual growth and overall development. Potential is recognized and opportunities
for further learning are provided. Our training programs are on par with elite universities and every year a
large number of fresh graduates are galvanized into thorough professionals in their chosen fields.
Wipro Academy of Software Excellence (WASE), the first of its kind in India, is aimed at preparing some of the
best Bachelor of Science students for the applications programming environment. The course equips fresh
graduates with necessary skills to work in applications in a growing software company, instilling the need for a
quality process.
Wipro Infotech Master of Science (WIMS), another unique model of employment offered by Wipro, aims at
preparing fresh BCA and B.Sc graduates for IT infrastructure Management services. It is an effort where
training in Information Technology/System Engineering is offered to the students with practical exposure to
the Infrastructure Management Service industry.
These programs register every student for an 8 semester Wipro sponsored MS course with the Birla Institute
Of Technology and Science (BITS - Pilani). Candidates will get to work on live projects and earn a monthly
stipend.

HISTORY OF WIPRO

Wipro ltd originally as a manufacturer of vegetable ghee and edible oil

etc was established in the year 1945.Later it diversified into various
other businesses and made a foray into Information Technology
business in 1982.It entered into the area of finance in 1992 through
Wipro finance.
Wipro ltd originated from an old mill in Amalner, Maharashtra was
founded in 1947 by Azim Premjis father. Because of sudden death of
his father in 1966 Azim Premji took over the leadership of the company
at the age of 21, when he was just a graduate in Electrical Engineering
from Stanford University. After taking the position he transformed Wipro
into a consumer goods company and 1975 he introduced Wipro Fluid
Power which manufacture hydraulic and pneumatic cylinder.
When IBM left India in 1977 Wipro stepped in into Information
technology business. In 1979 it started developing its own computer and
by 1981 it started selling finished products. This made Wipro Indias first
computer makers. After getting licensed technology from Sentinel

Computers it started making Indias first minicomputer and hired

experienced managers to handle the management.
Wipro forayed into software development in 1982 and introduced
customized software packages for its hardware customers. Thus it
expanded the business in IT sector and later developed Indias first
8086 chip. It started its off shore business in the United states in 1992
and was listed in New York Stock exchange in the year 2000.it has
been acknowledged as an offshore provider of technology services by
many research firm

he does not expect to see an improvement in sales from the hardware business unless the rupee
stabilizes. Sales from the hardware business have been consistently declining over the past three
years and some experts have said the company should hive off the business. In the June quarter,
hardware sales fell about 7% from a year ago. Wipro manufactures personal computers, including
desktops and laptops, as part of information technology (IT) services contracts with various

average of 26% a year while profits have grown by 69%.

DISTRIBUTION NETWORK OF WIPRO

Manufacturing has becoming complex with global procurement and wider distribution and sales
impacting supply chain planning tremendously. With organizations spanning continents and focusing on
service levels & customer satisfaction, distribution & logistics planning is becoming central to business
strategy even as logistics and transportation are critical for Just-in-time environments to succeed.
Companies are now exploring sales through multiple channel partners such as online, resellers and
retailers. Hence there is a need to increase channel revenue and manage channel conflicts. Increased
reliance on third party providers (3PL & 4PL) for warehousing and shipping makes tracking of goods,
selection of distribution centers and choice of providers important for optimizing costs and
order fulfillment. This cost containment can be achieved by efficient inventory management systems
which maintain minimum levels of on hand inventory, increase inventory turns and thus minimize the
working capital requirement.

Wipro has expertise in implementing various distribution and logistics solutions across industries. These
various areas include:
Distribution Resource Planning: This involves identifying the number of distribution centers
and their locations, demand management at each center and estimating the resources and quantity
needed.
Warehouse Management: This involves Cross docking, Multi-Echelon Inventory Management
and use of technology such as RFID to improve warehouse management.
Multi-Channel Management: Manufacturers have a variety of channels for sales. The onus is
to maximize channel revenues, avoid cannibalization and handle channel conflicts.
Logistics Planning: Solutions deal with 3PL/4 PL Management, transportation that include
Shipping solutions and freight management.

SWOT ANALYSIS
SWOT analysis is a strategic planning method used to evaluate the Strengths,
Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business
venture. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and
identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to
achieve that objective. The technique is credited to Albert Humphrey, who led a
convention at Stanford University in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune
500 companies.
A SWOT analysis must first start with defining a desired end state or objective. A
SWOT analysis may be incorporated into the strategic planning model. Strategic
Planning has been the subject of much research.

Strengths: characteristics of the business or team that give it an advantage over

others in the industry.

Weaknesses: are characteristics that place the firm at a disadvantage relative to

others.

Opportunities: external chances to make greater sales or profits in the

environment.

Threats: external elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the
business.
Identification of SWOTs is essential because subsequent steps in the process of
planning for achievement of the selected objective may be derived from the SWOTs.
First, the decision makers have to determine whether the objective is attainable,
given the SWOTs. If the objective is NOT attainable a different objective must be
selected and the process repeated.
The SWOT analysis is often used in academia to highlight and identify strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities and threats. It is particularly helpful in identifying areas
for development.

HISTORY OF SWOT ANALYSIS

Having arrived on this page you have probably surfed the Internet and scoured
books and journals in search of the history of SWOT Analysis. The simple answer to
the question what is SWOT? is that there is no simple answer, and one needs to
demonstrate a little academic wisdom in that nobody took the trouble to write the
first definitive journal paper or book that announced the birth of SWOT Analysis.
There is a number of contrasting, if not contradictory views on the origin of SWOT.
Here are a few of the leading thinkers on the topic (and if you have more please let
us know so that we can add them).

USE OF SWOT ANALYSIS

The usefulness of SWOT analysis is not limited to profit-seeking organizations.
SWOT analysis may be used in any decision-making situation when a desired endstate (objective) has been defined. Examples include: non-profit organizations,
governmental units, and individuals. SWOT analysis may also be usedin pre-crisis
planning and preventive crisis management. SWOT analysis may also be used in
creating a recommendation during a viability study/survey.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL FACTORS

The aim of any SWOT analysis is to identify the key internal and external factors
that are important to achieving the objective. These come from within the
company's unique value chain. SWOT analysis groups key pieces of information into
two main categories:
Internal factors The strengths and weaknesses internal to the organization.
External factors The opportunities and threats presented by the external
environment to the organization. - Use a PEST or PESTLE analysis to help identify
factors
The internal factors may be viewed as strengths or weaknesses depending upon
their impact on the organization's objectives. What may represent strengths with
respect to one objective may be weaknesses for another objective. The factors may
include all of the 4P's; as well as personnel, finance, manufacturing capabilities, and
so on. The external factors may include macroeconomic matters, technological
change, legislation, and socio-cultural changes, as well as changes in the

marketplace or competitive position. The results are often presented in the form of
a matrix.
SWOT analysis is just one method of categorization and has its own weaknesses. For
example, it may tend to persuade companies to compile lists rather than think
about what is actually important in achieving objectives. It also presents the
resulting lists uncritically and without clear prioritization so that, for example, weak
opportunities may appear to balance strong threats.
It is prudent not to eliminate too quickly any candidate SWOT entry. The importance
of individual SWOTs will be revealed by the value of the strategies it generates. A
SWOT item that produces valuable strategies is important. A SWOT item that
generates no strategies is not important.

In SWOT, strengths and weaknesses are internal factors.

Strength could be:

Your specialist marketing expertise.

A new, innovative product or service.

Location of your business.

Quality processes and procedures.

Any other aspect of your business that adds value to your product or service.

Weakness could be:

Lack of marketing expertise.

Undifferentiated products or services (i.e. in relation to your competitors).

Location of your business.

Poor quality goods or services.

Damaged reputation.

In SWOT, opportunities and threats are external factors.

Opportunity could be:

A developing market such as the Internet.

Mergers, joint ventures or strategic alliances.

Moving into new market segments that offer improved profits.

A new international market.

A market vacated by an ineffective competitor.

Threat could be:

A new competitor in your home market.

Price wars with competitors.

A competitor has a new, innovative product or service.

Competitors have superior access to channels of distribution.

Taxation is introduced on your product or service.

In many competitor analyses, marketers build detailed profiles of each competitor

in the market, focusing especially on their relative competitive strengths and
weaknesses using SWOT analysis. Marketing managers will examine each
competitor's cost structure, sources of profits, resources and competencies,
competitive positioning and product differentiation, degree of vertical integration,
historical responses to industry developments, and other factors.
Marketing management often finds it necessary to invest in research to collect the
data required to perform accurate marketing analysis. Accordingly, management
often conducts market research (alternately marketing research) to obtain this
information. Marketers employ a variety of techniques to conduct market research,
but some of the more common include:

Qualitative marketing research, such as focus groups

Quantitative marketing research, such as statistical surveys

Experimental techniques such as test markets

Observational techniques such as ethnographic (on-site) observation

Marketing managers may also design and oversee various environmental

scanning and competitive intelligence processes to help identify trends
and inform the company's marketing analysis.

MATCHING AND CONVERTING

Another way of utilizing SWOT is matching and converting.
Matching is used to find competitive advantages by matching the strengths to
opportunities.
Converting is to apply conversion strategies to convert weaknesses or threats into
strengths or opportunities.
An example of conversion strategy is to find new markets.
If the threats or weaknesses cannot be converted a company should try to minimize
or avoid them.

EVIDENCE ON THE USE OF SWOT

SWOT analysis may limit the strategies considered in the evaluation. J. Scott
Armstrong notes that "people who use SWOT might conclude that they have done
an adequate job of planning and ignore such sensible things as defining the firm's
objectives or calculating ROI for alternate strategies." Findings from Menon et al.

(1999) and Hill and Westbrook (1997) have shown that SWOT may harm
performance. As an alternative to SWOT, Armstrong describes a 5-step approach
alternative that leads to better corporate performance.
These criticisms are addressed to an old version of SWOT analysis that precedes the
SWOT analysis described above under the heading "Strategic and Creative Use of
SWOT Analysis." This old version did not require that SWOTs be derived from an
agreed upon objective. Examples of SWOT analyses that do not state an objective
can be "Human Resources" and "Marketing."

CORPORATE PLANNING
As part of the development of strategies and plans to enable the organization to
achieve its objectives, then that organization will use a systematic/rigorous process
known as corporate planning. SWOT alongside PEST/PESTLE can be used as a basis
for the analysis of business and environmental factors.
Set objectives defining what the organization is going to do
Environmental scanning
Internal appraisals of the organization's SWOT, this needs to include an assessment
of the present situation as well as a portfolio of products/services and an analysis of
the product/service life cycle
Analysis of existing strategies, this should determine relevance from the results of
an internal/external appraisal. This may include gap analysis which will look at
environmental factors
Strategic Issues defined key factors in the development of a corporate plan which
needs to be addressed by the organization
Develop new/revised strategies revised analysis of strategic issues may mean the
objectives need to change
Establish critical success factors the achievement of objectives and strategy
implementation
Preparation of operational, resource, projects plans for strategy implementation

Simple rules for successful SWOT analysis:

Be realistic about the strengths and weaknesses of your organization when

conducting SWOT analysis.
SWOT analysis should distinguish between where your organization is today,
and where it could be in the future.
SWOT should always be specific. Avoid grey areas.
Always apply SWOT in relation to your competition i.e. better than or worse
than your competition.

Keep your SWOT short and simple. Avoid complexity and over analysis

SWOT is subjective.
Once key issues have been identified with your SWOT analysis, they feed into
marketing objectives. SWOT can be used in conjunction with other tools for audit
and analysis, such as PEST analysis and Porter's Five forces analysis. So SWOT is a
very popular tool with marketing students because it is quick and easy to learn.
During the SWOT exercise, list factors in the relevant boxes. It's that simple. Below
are some FREE examples of SWOT analysis - click to go straight to them

CONCLUSION
SWOT helps a company to see itself for better and for worse. Companies are
inherently insular and inward looking SWOTs are a means by which a company can
better understand what it does very well and where its shortcomings are. SWOTs

SWOT analysis has been a framework of choice among many managers for along
time because of its simplicity and its portrayal of the essence of sound strategy
formation -matching a firm's opportunities and threats wit its strengths and
weaknesses. Central to making SWOT analysis effective is accurate internal
analysis - the identification of specific strengths and weaknesses around which
sound strategy can be built.

KEY CHALLENGES AND

PROBLEMS FACING THE
ORGANISATION
Wipro's primary research revealed that businesses are set to accrue significant benefits from
enterprise mobilityincluding sales growth, operational efficiency gains, and heightened employee
productivity.
"Communication Service Providers (CSPs) and Telecom Equipment Vendors (TEVs) must move out of
their comfort zone - the communications layer - and delve into the provision of enterprise mobility
applications that solve the complex business problems faced by their clients," explained Ayan Mukerji,
the Senior Vice President and Global Head of Wipro Technologies Media and Telecom Strategic
Business Unit.
The report puts forth the perspective that CSPs and TEVs must construct an integrated product
development, marketing, and sales strategy that leverages their innate strengths and sets them apart
from likely competitors. The three key insights from the survey that CSPs and TEVs can employ to
differentiate themselves from competitors include:

Network controls for data security. 70 percent of the survey respondents described security
as an above average barrier to the adoption of mobility solutions.

Network ownership to guarantee quality-of-service. Latency and downtime, while generally

accepted in the consumer market, will not be acceptable for mission critical enterprise solutions.

Vertical industry breadth. The communication industrys presence across every business
vertical leaves it well-positioned to sell and deliver industry-tailored mobility solutions.

Given the stunning business benefits projected by the survey participants, the Wipro report projects
that widespread adoption of enterprise mobility solutions is inevitable. Enterprise mobility is such a
critical investment area that if the communications industry fails to improve its market alignment of
appropriate solutions, it will be left behind by competitors with deeper experience and brand
recognition in enterprise mobility applications.

Wipro Leaders Qualities Survey, which started in 1992, is one of our oldest
leadership development initiatives. It has successfully contributed in our
endeavor to nurture top class business leaders in Wipro. We have 8 Wipro
Leadership Qualities, which are based on Wipro vision, values and business
strategy. In order to identify and help leaders develop these competencies
we adopt a 360-degree survey process. This is an end-to-end program, which
starts with the obtaining of feedback from relevant respondents and ends
with each leader drawing up a Personal Development Plan (PDP) based on
the feedback received. The PDP is developed through Winds of Change
