Description of Hospital

Yearly rotations are available and distributed prior to

commencement. These are set after careful consideration
of training requirements, past rotations, special interests
and requests. Whilst every effort is made to accommodate
requests, this is not always possible.

Austin Health incorporates the Austin Hospital, Heidelberg

Repatriation Hospital and Royal Talbot Hospital. In addition
there are strong links between Austin Health and The
University of Melbourne, Clinical School.

Physician Training
The Central North West Basic Physician Training
Consortium incorporates Austin Health, Northern Health,
Bendigo Health, and Wimmera Healthcare Group (Horsham
Hospital).
The Consortium is renowned for its physician-training
program and has an excellent pass rate in the FRACP
Written and Clinical Exams. The Consortium runs a mock
written exam in early February which emulates true exam
conditions. A feedback session gives the opportunity for
trainees to discuss the questions and answers. Directors of
Physician Training and Senior Medical Registrars at both
Austin and Northern organise an extensive series of topic
tutorials, long and short case clinical tutorials and arrange
Saturday morning practice clinical exams to adequately
prepare trainees for the clinical exam. The practice clinical
exams are held at Austin Health, Northern Health and
Bendigo Health. A Professional Development program is
available for Physician Trainees through the Consortium
and covers topics such as Feedback Teaching styles
Mentoring Managing Conflict Team building skills.

Austin Health won the premiers award for most
outstanding health service for 2006. The incorporation of

new Austin Tower encompasses new HMO quarters as well
as an extensive education precinct and modern ward design
and facilities. A clinical skills lab is situated on the Austin
Hospital site. The clinical skills lab provides hands on
training and simulated activity for all members of the
health care team.
Director of Medical Education
Austin Health has appointed a Director of Medical
Education to head up the Medical Education Unit. The
Director works with the HMO Manager to ensure that the

GP Rural Generalist Pathway

The concept is to develop a pathway visible to those who
are still within the clinical training years at Medical School,
especially those associated with Deakin University, taking
them through the prevocational years (Intern and
Postgraduate Year 2) into a choice of targeted skills training
in their third or subsequent postgraduate years on their
path to specific training within the general practice
environment in the Barwon South West Region or other
areas covered by Southern GP Training.
Targeted skills training in the third or subsequent
postgraduate year would be in the fields of Obstetrics
(Advanced Diploma), JCCC Anaesthetics, Critical Care (ICU
and or Emergency Medicine), Surgery or Community
Paediatrics. The pathway involves 5 years of training 3 years
with Barwon Health and two years with Southern GP
Training.
Successful applicants for this pathway must exhibit a
genuine interest in undertaking a career in rural general
practice, preferably within the Barwon South West Region
of Victoria. Applicants who have undertaken their medical
training at Deakin Medical School or one of the other
Victorian Medical Rural Clinical Schools are prefered.
As 2013 will be the first year of the program applicants to
fill five intern, five HMO2 General Stream, one JCC
Anaesthetic (must be at least PGY3), one Advanced
Diploma in Obstretics (must be at least PGY3) , one joint
ICU/Emergency Medicine post (must be at least PGY3) , one
surgical skills post (must be at least PGY3) and one
community paeditraics post (must be at least PGY4 with at
least one term of GP training) are being sought. All
successful applicants will be expected to already be part of
the Australian GP Training or apply for GP training via AGPT
with Southern GP Training, during their intern or
subsequent postgraduate years.

rural and regional Victorians.
Services range from aged care, rehabilitation, cardiac and
major trauma, to oncology, intensive care, general

The Royal Melbourne Hospital City Campus
Victoria's oldest and busiest hospital, The Royal Melbourne
Hospital has been caring for Victorians since 1848. In the
past 12 months, RMH treated 93,000 inpatients and more
than 120,000 outpatients.

education and patient care. RMH has an extensive range of
services including cardiac, oncology, neurosciences and
trauma.

PMCV Intern Match Hospital Directory 2012

The Royal Park Campus specialises in aged care,

rehabilitation and ambulatory services. Advances in clinical
practice, the changing health needs of an ageing population
and community expectations are resulting in fewer and
shorter hospital stays and a greater demand for care in the
home. Consequently, an increasing emphasis at the Royal
Park Campus will be placed on ambulatory care.

Conditions of Employment
Appointments will be made under the terms and conditions
of the AMA HMO Certified Agreement.
Research & Education
RMH is located in Melbourne's internationally renowned
Parkville Precinct, the hub of medical and biotechnology

Mid term feedback is provided verbally by the Registrar.

Formal written assessment occurs at the end of each
rotation and is conducted by a senior member of medical
staff. All rotations are evaluated at the end of each term
using a de-identified process.
Rosters
Yearly rotations are available and distributed prior to
commencement. These are set after careful consideration
of training requirements, past rotations, special interests
and requests. Whilst every effort is made to accommodate
requests, this is not always possible.

written exam in early February which emulates true exam
conditions. A feedback session gives the opportunity for
trainees to discuss the questions and answers. Directors of

Postgraduate Medical Education

Education Staff
St Vincents Hospital has a highly developed Medical
Education Unit to facilitate the education of all its medical
personnel. The Director of Medical Education and the
Medical Education Officer (MEO) supports the continuing
education of the HMO1 and HMO2 staff. The Hospitals
Postgraduate Medical Education Committee oversees the
activities of the MEO and the supervisors of Intern,
physician and surgical training.
A comprehensive three-day orientation program is
provided for all new Interns. This is supported by a twiceweekly seminar series for the first six weeks, specifically
designed to support Interns in their early weeks, followed
by monthly sessions for the remainder of the year. An
orientation morning is provided for all HMOs new to the
Health Service. Thereafter a monthly education program is
tailored to meet the needs of developing trainees.
Education Programs
Regular seminars, journal club and audit programs are
conducted by senior medical staff. Learning objectives and
orientation packages for each HMO1 and HMO2 rotation
have been developed. There is a HMO website which
communicates education activities and RMO society
functions. A comprehensive online learning program is
available providing self-directed learning opportunities for
residents. The state-of-the-art Education Centre with
impressive surgical skills laboratory and high fidelity patient
simulator affords HMOs the opportunity to practise
management of crisis situations, in a safe and supervised
learning environment. Advanced Life Support training is
provided annually for all Interns and Residents, and for
Interns commencing on a rural rotation first up, they
undergo this training in their orientation period prior to

departure. HMOs are offered an opportunity to extend
their clinical skills through our Advanced Clinical Skills
program offered regularly throughout the year. Wellstructured physician, surgical and subspecialty training
programs are in place with outstanding success rates in the
fellowship exams.
Two Way Feedback
Interns are encouraged to provide a full and comprehensive
care service to their patients, under the supervision of
senior medical staff. The Supervisor of Prevocational
Training monitors progress, and Interns are encouraged to
provide feedback on their experiences in a two-way
feedback system. An appraisal system affords opportunity
for regular feedback on performance from supervisors.
Support
St Vincents has a dedicated Surgical Mentor program
designed to assist Interns and Residents interested in a
surgical career. Considerable support is provided to HMO
staff on secondment from the hospital.
An annual Careers Night facilitates choices in vocational
training and assists Interns and Residents in interview and
CV writing skills.
