PRESS RELEASE
WAP 7 An Energy Efficient Loco Now in Dakshin Express

WAP 7 is a high speed locomotive

indigenously developed by Chittaranjan
Locomotive Works. It is capable of
hauling trains at speeds ranging between
140 and 160 km per hour.
With the last 4 months effort by division,
CR HQ has chased with Railway Board
resulted introduction of WAP7 loco in
Dakshin Express on 2 feb 2012, further
Sampark kranti express is also expected to get WAP 7 in next one month. Nagpur
division also planning to switch over to WAP 7 locos in Indore Trishatabdi express and
Nagpur-Indore weekly express.
The requirement of banker engine in ghat section is eliminated, resulted in saving of 10
minutes time in the critical ghat section as well as saving of electrical energy about
700 units per train while descending the ghat with same loco. It will also save the
banker engine use and energy. Due to high acceleration the punctuality is
maintained in division.

Performance:
With a maximum speed rating of 180 km/h (IR
restricts it to 145 km/hr), the WAP-7 boasts of
the most phenomenal acceleration figures
while hauling mail/express trains. The WAP-7
can also haul loads of 24-26 passenger
coaches (1430-1550t) at 110+ km per hour. It
is also known to haul 16 heavyweight Air
Conditioned coaches (1120t) in 1:40 inclines
single-handedly. At a trial conducted by Indian
Railways, it clocked a speed of 177 km/h. It is
the most successful passenger locomotive in
the Indian Railways portfolio after the WAP-4. It is used to haul premium trains like the

Rajdhani Express and the Shatabdi Express apart from other regular mail/express
trains.
Currently a 6000 hp version with IGBT traction is developed by Chittaranjan Locomotive
Works.
A 24-coach (1500t) passenger rake can be accelerated to 110 km/h in 240 seconds
(over 4.7 km) by a WAP-7; to 120 km/h in 304 sec. (6.7 km); and to 130 km/h in 394
sec. (9.9 km).
Energy Saving:
Figures available prove that on level sections, the loco generates around 10% of energy
consumed and on graded sections up to 30%. As of now, 300 WAG 9, WAP 7 and WAP
5 locos running on the network annually save about 100 million units of energy,
saving 105 tons of CO2 per annum.
Comparison with Rail road:
The SEC of WAP7 is around 12.28 units per 1000 gross ton KM (GTKM), where as
for WAG 9 it is calculated as 6.63 units per 1000 GTKM which is 15 to 25% less
than conventional locos.
A 12 T motor vehicle consumes 1 liter for 3 Km. equivalent to 27.7 liter per 1000
GTKM. Which means saving of Rs 1200 per 1000GTKM in WAG 9 loco hauled
trains. Even if compared with diesel traction it saves Rs 100 per 1000GTKM.
