spends a lot of lime thinking about a fellow named
John Doe No. 52. He's one
of'a dozen corpses that
have turned up in the
"Southern California
homosexual murders," a
;series of mutilation kill, ings that has stumped hot'shot Los Angeles detective

The victims have been

'most of the corpses remain unidentified. "The
youngest is still unidentified, but he looks about
16." St. John said. "The
oldest is 25 or 26."
St. John, the subject of
i book called "Jigsaw
tohn" and a television
series of the same name,
if known for adroitness in
solving difficult cases. He

years on the case, he still
doesn't know whether he's
slalking a lone murderer
or two or more persons
acting
together.

about w h a t he learned
from the Houston case,
but he says he's pretty
sure the Los Angeles cases
don't involve an organized

"These kids probably
come from a farm in the
Midwest, they leave home
and want to see the
world." St. John says of
the victims. "They come
here, they're broke they
may be homosexual,
maybe not thev get in
top deep, and the first
thing you know, they're
murder victims."
. The problem in trying to
solve the case is that the
victims arc usually unidentifiable.
'"THEY MERE probably never arrested, so the
FBI has no fingerprints on
them," St. John says.
'Their families don't
know where they are. One
of 'the problems of the
thing is. you're really at a
disadvantage when you
can't identify the victim.
You can't go into his background and get a clue.
